I understand the responsibilities that African parents often place on their children, especially, those who are successful. One common expectation is that you must help raise your siblings, as if it’s automatically your duty.

Now, don’t get me wrong—helping is good. It’s honorable. But there comes a point where enough is enough, especially when that help turns into entitlement. When you’re constantly working hard, sacrificing your own comfort to support others, and the same people you’re helping don’t show appreciation; it’s only natural to start questioning things.

At that point, you have to ask yourself:
Am I being incredibly wise for stepping up?
Or am I being taken for granted and maybe even played for a fool?

Support should come with respect. When it’s no longer appreciated and instead expected, the line has been crossed. Love and generosity should not be mistaken for obligation or weakness. There’s nothing wrong with helping your family, but you also have a right to draw boundaries especially when your own growth and peace are at stake. Iseeeeeh!!!!
