The number of kidnapped victims in Nigeria was Q3 of 2022 to Q2 of 2023. While Zamfara, Kaduna and Niger unsurprisingly take the first spots, Yobe, Gombe and Bayelsa have the lowest kidnap incidence.

The Wagner Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has appeared in a video somewhere in Africa, urging Africans to join the Private Military Company (PMC). This is coming after ECOWAS rejected the 3 year transition plan of the Junta in Niger to hand over power to a civilian government.

It remains to be seen if Wagner is preparing for a possible showdown with ECOWAS Forces in Niger Republic in the event of an invasion. Time will tell.

According to the The Economist, 79% of respondents supports the actions of the Military Junta in Niger, and 78% thinks they should stay in power for an extended period before elections are held.

Also, 53% of survey respondents preferred a Russian intervention presumably because they think they will support their military as Wagner did in Mali.

This statistics is important in the context of the ECOWAS plan to engage the coup plotters in Niger through the use of force. With an apparent consensus by the Nigerien people, any military intervention by ECOWAS will be against the interest of the people of Niger.

Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine which began in February 2022 has escalated and is still ongoing after more than a year. The impact of the war is being felt across the globe especially in Europe including the major players and "spectators".

That is the more reason why ECOWAS must shelve any idea of a military intervention in Niger Republic. An intervention in this form will plunged the entire Sub-region, and the continent in conflict which will have dire consequences.

We must do what is in our best interest, and in this case a diplomatic solution will continue to be the best approach.
