The Stubborn Wife
Episode Nine
Violet sat alone in her living room, still in her nightgown even though it was past noon. Her eyes were red and puffy. She hadn’t eaten anything all day. The house was quiet—too quiet. The sound of Steve’s footsteps, the clinking of plates in the kitchen, and his occasional humming while mopping were all gone. She could feel the silence pressing on her chest like a heavy load. It had been two days since Steve told her it was over. She couldn’t handle the loneliness anymore.
She picked up her phone and scrolled through her contacts. She needed someone to talk to. Someone who wouldn’t judge her. Her eyes stopped on Nellie’s name. Nellie had always been warm and friendly. Without thinking much, she dialed her number.
“Hello, Violet,” Nellie answered softly.
“Nellie, please can you come over? I need to talk to someone. It’s urgent,” Violet said.
“I’ll be there shortly,” Nellie replied.
Thirty minutes later, Nellie walked into the house. She noticed Violet’s swollen eyes immediately. The living room was untidy, and it was clear Violet hadn’t been herself. She hugged her tightly and led her to the couch.
“Talk to me,” Nellie said gently.
Violet took a deep breath. “Steve left me.”
“What?” Nellie asked with a surprised look.
“Yes. He moved out of the house. I didn’t even know when he packed his things. He just disappeared. I thought he would come back, but he didn’t. Then he came here days ago and told me he wants a divorce.”
Nellie remained quiet, nodding slowly as if she was hearing it for the first time.
“I know I treated him badly,” Violet continued. “I took him for granted. I thought he would never leave. I made him feel small because he wasn’t earning much. But I didn’t realize how important he was to me until he walked out.”
Nellie placed her hand on Violet’s shoulder. “I’m really sorry, Violet. That must be very hard.”
“It is. I haven’t been able to sleep or eat. I just sit here all day, thinking and crying. I wish I could undo everything. I wish I treated him better. I just didn’t know how much damage I was doing.”
Nellie looked down, hiding her growing baby bump with her handbag. She felt a wave of guilt wash over her, but she remembered what Steve had told her: “Don’t say anything yet. Let me handle it.” So she kept quiet.
“I’m sure Steve is just hurt,” Nellie said gently. “Maybe he needs some time. Maybe he’ll come around.”
Violet wiped her tears. “I don’t know. He’s so cold now. Like he doesn’t even remember the love we once shared.”
Nellie didn’t reply to that. Instead, she reached for Violet’s hand and gave it a small squeeze. “No matter what happens, you’ll be okay.”
“Thank you, Nellie,” Violet whispered. “Thank you for coming.”
“I’ll always be here for you,” Nellie said, standing up slowly. “Try to get some rest, okay?”
Violet nodded. Nellie walked out of the house and stood outside for a moment, holding her belly. Her emotions were mixed. She felt bad for Violet, but she also felt protective of her unborn child. The child needed a peaceful home, and Steve had given her that. She walked away, quietly praying Violet would accept the situation when the truth finally came out.
Later that evening, Violet was lying on the couch when she heard a knock at the door. She rushed to open it, hoping it was Steve coming back to apologize. But when she opened the door, he was standing there with a brown envelope in his hand.
“Steve?” she asked, trying to hide her surprise.
“I came to give you this,” Steve said firmly, handing her the envelope.
“What is it?”
“Divorce papers. I’ve already signed them. You just need to go through them and sign your part. My lawyer will take it from there.”
Violet stood frozen. Her hands trembled as she took the envelope. “You’re really doing this?”
“Yes,” Steve said. “I didn’t come to argue or fight. I just came to make it official.”
Violet’s lips quivered. “Steve, please…”
“I wish you the best, Violet. But this marriage is over.”
And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving her standing by the door with the divorce papers in her hand.
That night, Violet wept like never before. She held the envelope tightly against her chest, crying until her voice became hoarse. She lay on the floor, surrounded by the scattered contents of the envelope, whispering Steve’s name over and over again. But he didn’t come back.
The next morning, she couldn’t get out of bed. She called her office and told them she was taking the day off. Her manager tried to ask what was wrong, but she simply ended the call. She dragged herself back under the blanket and continued crying. Her phone rang several times, but she ignored it. The only person she wanted to hear from wasn’t calling.
Her body ached from lying in one position for too long. The house was cold, the curtains still drawn, and the smell of stale food hung in the air. Violet looked at the ceiling and muttered, “God, please help me. I’ve lost everything.”
But help didn’t come.
Steve didn’t call.
And Nellie, though kind, had her own secret growing inside her belly.
Violet had no idea her best friend was now carrying her husband’s child.
The worst was yet to come.
