Breaking: Notorious Zamfara bandit leader Ado Aleru has reportedly demanded a political appointment, saying:

"Give me a position as Chairman or Commissioner in Zamfara, and I guarantee peace."

He claimed Fulani communities have been excluded from government positions despite having many educated members, and said greater inclusion would help address insecurity.

According to him, since the administration of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, they had been appealing for greater inclusion of their people in government, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

The remarks were heard in a viral audio recording circulating on Facebook and other social media platforms.

INEC, Securities to ensure a peaceful, credible, election in Ekiti

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies have pledged to ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent governorship election in Ekiti State ahead of the June 20, 2026 poll.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a high-level readiness assessment meeting held in Ado-Ekiti with members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), electoral officials, security chiefs, and other stakeholders. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, said the meeting was aimed at strengthening coordination among security agencies and INEC to ensure smooth conduct of the election.

Dr. Omoseyindemi said INEC had improved voter education, logistics planning, and training of election personnel, while also engaging political parties, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and the media. He, however, identified vote buying, political thuggery, fake news, transportation challenges, and insecurity in remote communities as major threats to the electoral process. He stressed the need for professionalism, neutrality, and quick response among security agencies to maintain public trust.

Also speaking, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Micheal, said security agencies were working together through intelligence sharing and joint operations to guarantee peaceful elections. He warned against political violence, misinformation, and violations of electoral laws, adding that security personnel would maintain law and order before, during, and after the governorship election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), said preparations for the election had advanced with the configuration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and recruitment of ad-hoc staff through the INECPRES portal. He disclosed that risk assessments identified flashpoint areas linked to thuggery, cultism, kidnapping, ballot snatching, and vandalism, with 469 polling units marked for special security attention. He added that the Commission was working with the EFCC and ICPC to tackle vote buying, while PVCs from the Continuous Voter Registration exercise would soon be distributed across the state’s 177 wards.

EFCC hands over N837m to Katsina Govt

The Kano Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has handed over N837,485,389 recovered from alleged cases of diversion of public funds to the Katsina Government.

Hikaya Newspaper reports that the commission said the money was recovered from separate investigations carried out by the agency.

According to the EFCC, N547 million was recovered from an alleged tax diversion scandal involving funds from international organisations such as WHO and MSF. The agency said some staff of the Katsina State Internal Revenue Service and some bank officials were allegedly involved in the case. It added that some of the suspects had admitted guilt and were already convicted, while others are still facing trial at the Katsina State High Court.

The commission also disclosed that it recovered another N290 million in a separate investigation involving former officials of the Katsina State treasury, who were accused of diverting public funds into company accounts without carrying out any project or contract.

The Kano Zonal Director of the EFCC, ACE1 Friday S. Ebelo, said the money belongs to the people of Katsina and should be used for the development of the state. Also speaking, an official of the Katsina State revenue agency, Dr. Kabir Abdullahi Yantumaki, thanked the EFCC and assured that the recovered funds would be returned to the state government account for public use.

Max Air flight returns to Abuja over engine issue.

Max Air confirmed that one of its flights from Abuja to Katsina made an emergency return shortly after takeoff following an engine-related problem. The airline said Flight VM1620 departed on Monday, May 11, 2026, before returning about 15 minutes later after the crew of aircraft 5N-DAB, a Boeing 737-300, noticed an indication of engine malfunction.

Some passengers on board described the incident as frightening, while videos of the situation later went viral on social media. One passenger said strange sounds were heard a few minutes after takeoff, forcing the pilot to return to Abuja. The passenger added that many dignitaries were on board, including the son of the airline’s founder, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal.

“We thank God for landing safely. It wasn’t a funny experience. We thought the aircraft was going to drop,” the passenger said. However, the airline maintained that the pilots acted professionally and followed standard aviation safety procedures by returning the aircraft immediately after noticing the problem.

According to Max Air, the aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew members disembarked without injury. The airline also arranged another aircraft, identified as 5N-DMK, from Kano to continue the Abuja–Katsina route and other scheduled flights.

The airline said its technical team had started a full assessment of the aircraft in line with safety regulations. It also stated that it was in contact with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and would cooperate with any investigation. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau had not released any statement on the incident.

Breaking: Nigeria, U.S. Strengthen Security Partnership

Nigeria and the United States have agreed to strengthen cooperation on security, counterterrorism, regional stability and other strategic issues following a high-level meeting between officials of both countries.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, made this known during a three-day working visit to the United States from May 4 to May 6. During the visit, Ribadu conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining strong relations between Nigeria and the United States.

Ribadu held meetings with U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance, Acting National Security Adviser and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Ho**er, and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim. The discussions focused on counterterrorism, defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, regional security, economic growth and democratic governance.

The National Security Adviser said Nigeria remains committed to working with international partners to address terrorism, violent extremism, cybercrime and other security threats affecting West Africa and the Sahel region. He also explained Nigeria’s efforts to improve security through military operations, community engagement, economic development and deradicalisation programmes.

During the meetings, Ribadu thanked the U.S. government for supporting Nigeria in areas such as security assistance, intelligence cooperation, humanitarian support and defence capacity building. Both countries also reviewed progress under the Nigeria–U.S. Joint Working Group framework aimed at improving bilateral cooperation on strategic and security matters.

U.S. officials commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting peace and security in Africa and described the country as an important strategic partner. Both sides agreed to continue strengthening diplomatic relations, defence cooperation and regular communication in order to address common regional and global security challenges.
