Did you know Ogoni land has been at the forefront of the fight against oil pollution for decades? In 1970, Nigeria's first major oil spill occurred in Ogoni land, releasing crude oil nonstop for three weeks and destroying livelihoods. Between 1976 and 1991, there were an estimated 2,976 separate oil spills in Ogoni land, releasing over two million barrels of crude oil.
The Ogoni people, through the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), peacefully protested these injustices. Their demands, outlined in the Ogoni Bill of Rights, called for environmental protection and economic control. Despite the tragic events of the 1990s, including the ex*****on of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders, oil spills have continued. Between 1993 and 2022, there have been at least 10 more significant oil spills in Ogoni land.
