A Tribute to Hajiya Safara’u: A Mother of Grace and Virtue
Late Hajiya Safara’u Umaru Barebari Radda, the beloved mother of Katsina State Governor, Malam Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, was more than just a mother, she was a beacon of love, strength, and unwavering devotion. Her kindness knew no bounds, her prayers never ceased, and her heart embraced not only her children but everyone who crossed her path. She raised her family on the pillars of humility, integrity, respect, and service to humanity, leaving behind a legacy of goodness that will outlive generations.
Even in her final days, as illness weakened her body and made speech difficult, her spirit remained unshaken. Lying on her sickbed, she never stopped praying. Her love for her son extended to all who were associated with him. The moment a visitor was introduced as Gwagware’s friend or associate, her frail voice would rise in supplication, praying for their success, their protection, and the prosperity of their families. Malam Dikko, fondly called ‘Gwagware’ by his family, was her pride and joy. It was as if the mere mention of his name rekindled her strength, allowing her to pour out endless blessings. She would not stop until the visitor prepared to leave, at which point, she would reluctantly rest, her heart still whispering prayers. Such was the depth of her love, the purity of her soul.
Fate, however, had its own plans. She departed this world while her son was thousands of miles away in Mecca for Umrah. Despite their unbreakable bond and his position as a sitting governor, Malam Dikko refused to use public resources to secure a chartered flight to return home for her burial. He made the painful sacrifice of missing his mother’s final moments, choosing instead to uphold the values she had instilled in him. He waited patiently for a seat on a commercial flight, accepting the heartbreak of not being there, all in honor of the principles she had taught him, integrity, humility, and accountability.
Even in death, she inspired one final lesson: that true greatness lies in selflessness. Malam Dikko’s decision to let the funeral rites proceed in his absence was a testament to his deep respect for family hierarchy. He deferred to his elder brother, the traditional ruler of Radda District, allowing him to lead the family in their time of grief. Where power could have disrupted traditions, he chose humility, proving that leadership is not about position but about values.
Late Hajiya Safara’u did not just raise children; she nurtured greatness. She was a mother in every sense of the word, selfless, prayerful, and full of boundless love. Today, the people of Katsina State, and indeed, Nigeria mourn her passing. Yet, even in grief, they celebrate the remarkable life she lived, the virtues she upheld, and the prayers she left behind.
May Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant her Jannatul Firdaus and make her resting place one of peace and light. Ameen.
