CARDINAL FRANCIS ARINZE - Nigerian Prelate and current Cardinal Bishop of Velletri–Segni

Cardinal Francis Arinze is a retired senior Vatican official with fervent orthodox views who has had a long and distinguished career in the Church spanning several decades.

Born on November 1, 1932, in Eziowelle, Nigeria, into a family that practiced traditional African religion, at the age of 9, on November 1, 1941 (his birthday), young Francis made the decision to convert to Catholicism. This was not due to pressure from adults or others around him, but rather of his own volition and through what he believed to be the grace of God.

The person who received Arinze into the Catholic faith was Blessed Cyprian Tansi, who was serving as a parish priest at the time. Blessed Tansi’s example of holiness left a lasting impression on the young Arinze, particularly in teaching him to recognize and love Christ’s presence in the Eucharist.

He then began his journey to priesthood at a young age, studying at All Hallows Seminary in Nuewi before pursuing philosophy and theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary and the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.

Arinze was ordained priest in 1958 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Church hierarchy. In 1965, at the age of 32, he became the youngest Roman Catholic bishop in the world when he was appointed titular bishop of Fissiana and coadjutor to the archbishop of Onitsha, Nigeria. He attended the final session of the Second Vatican Council that same year, marking the beginning of his involvement in global Church affairs.

One of the most challenging periods in Arinze’s career came shortly after he was named archbishop of Onitsha in 1967. The Nigeria-Biafra War broke out, and his entire archdiocese was located in the secessionist Biafran territory. During this time, Arinze demonstrated remarkable leadership, aiding refugees and supervising an efficient distribution of relief materials. He managed to keep the Church independent of the warring factions, showcasing his diplomatic skills.

Arinze’s talents were recognized by the Vatican, and in 1984, he was called to Rome by Pope John Paul II to lead the Secretariat for Non-Christians (later renamed the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue). This appointment marked the beginning of his long and distinguished career in the Roman Curia.

In 1985, Arinze was elevated to the rank of cardinal, becoming a key advisor to Pope John Paul II. He served in various capacities, including as president of the Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops. His work in interfaith relations earned him a gold medallion from the International Council of Christians and Jews in 1999.

In 2002, Arinze was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, a position he held until 2008. This role made him the fourth highest-ranking official in the Roman Curia at the time.

Arinze was considered a strong papabile candidate in the 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. Although he was not elected, he remained a respected figure in the Church. Benedict XVI elevated him to Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni in 2005, a role traditionally held by papabili.

Even after his retirement as prefect in 2008, Arinze continued to play important roles in the Church. In 2009, he was called to preach the spiritual exercises for the Roman Curia, which Pope Benedict XVI attended. He took part in two synods of bishops, on the Eucharist in 2005, and on Africa in 2009.

Cardinal Arinze holds orthodox Catholic views, especially on matters of life, the family, and sexuality. He emphasizes adherence to established Church teachings and scripture rather than advocating for changes to accommodate modern societal trends.

In 2022, he rejected the claims of two influential cardinals — Reinhard Marx and Jean-Claude Hollerich — who had suggested that Catholic moral teachings were negotiable or even false, with Marx asserting that the teachings of the Church are “not set in stone”. “It is not wise for a Catholic bishop or priest or, worse, a cardinal, to suggest that,” Cardinal Arinze said. “If the cardinal who said that was thinking about homosexuality, he cannot be supported at all.”

Now into his 90s, he continues to occasionally speak out in defense of the faith, often with his characteristic good humor.2 He may also wield considerable influence at the next conclave.

Throughout his career, Cardinal Arinze has been known for his frankness, his work in interfaith dialogue, and his orthodox positions on Church doctrine.

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu
DBE FMedSci HonFRSC - Nigerian Based Scholar, Politician

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu is a distinguished nanoscientist and the President of Wolfson College.

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu DBE FMedSci HonFRSC is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a governor on the Wellcome board (one of the largest biomedical sciences research charities in the world), a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences Council and Chief Scientific Officer of Nanomerics Ltd. In 2024, Ijeoma was installed as President of Wolfson College, having been elected to the position in November 2023.

She has served as Chair of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and chaired EPSRC and Science Foundation Ireland grant prioritisation panels. She served as the UCL Provost's Envoy for Race Equality, a role in which she led on race equality work at UCL. Her initiatives (e.g. Dean’s Pledges on Race Equality) were instrumental in achieving UCL's Bronze Race Charter in 2020. She has also presented to the UK House of Commons on the educational racial disparities that lead to a lack of ethnic minority representation in scientific research.

Ijeoma has studied the mechanisms of drug transport across biological barriers and created transformational drug transport nanoparticles. She was the first to show that peptides could be delivered across the blood brain barrier to elicit a pharmacological response, when presented as peptide drug nanofibers and the first to demonstrate, via definitive pharmacology and pharmacokinetics evidence, peptide transport into the brain, using peptide nanoparticles delivered via the nose to brain route.

These findings led to the enkephalin pain medicine candidate Envelta™, which was designed to address the opioid crisis. The technology underpinning Envelta™ won first prize in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Emerging Technologies competition in 2017 and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences Science Innovation Award in 2016.

Ijeoma has also won numerous prizes for her work and these include: the UK Government's Women of Outstanding Achievement in Science, Engineering and Technology 2007, Royal Pharmaceutical Society Pharmaceutical Scientist of the Year 2012, Special Recognition Business of Science Leadership Award 2023 and others. In 2019, Ijeoma received an honorary degree from Lincoln University and in 2024, she was listed in Who's Who 2024. Ijeoma was made a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 2025 New Year Honours.

Her professional credentials reflect a distinguished career in financial services. Fiona is a passionate and astute professional with over 15 years of working experience in the Financial Services industry. She is currently the Managing Director of First Securities Brokers Limited, a subsidiary of First Holdco Plc. Fiona began her investment banking career with Lead Capital, Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers and joined FBNQuest Capital (formerly FBN Capital) in 2014 as the Head of Sales Trading and a member of the Sales Team for International/Local Institutional Clients.

She left FBN Capital to African Alliance, a Pan-African Investment Banking Group, as the Managing Director of African Alliance Securities Nigeria, in May 2015, with responsibility for the Nigerian Market Strategy, growing trading market share, existing client base and international/local deal flow.

SEN. MUKHAIL TOKUNBO ABIRU - Senator, Lagos East Senatorial District, National Assembly

Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA and or “Tokunbo Abiru” is an accomplished Nigerian Banker, Chartered Accountant, and now a Public Servant. He is currently the Senator, representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the 10th Nigerian National Assembly, after about 32 years’ Corporate experience (of which 29 years was spent in the banking industry).

He is currently the Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions as well the Chairman of the Nigerian Southern Senators Forum in the National Assembly. He was also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries in the 9th National Assembly.

He was the pioneer and former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Bank Limited. He led the turnaround of erstwhile Skye Bank Plc, as Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, under the CBN-induced take-over of the Bank, in a bid to avoid its collapse and also preserve the stability of the overall Nigerian Financial System.

His banking career were in top Nigeria Financial Institution such as First Bank of Nigeria (2002 - 2016), where he rose to the level of Executive Director, Corporate Banking and Guaranty Trust Bank (1991 - 2000).

Tokunbo Abiru, also served on other notable boards as Non-Executive Directors; FBN Capital Limited (now FBN Quest Merchant Bank Limited); FBN Bank Sierra-Leone Limited; Airtel Mobile Networks Limited; and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc. (NIBSS).

During the course of his professional career, he also had the privilege of serving as the Honourable Commissioner of Finance, Lagos State (2011 - 2013), under the transformational Leadership of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).

Senator Abiru’s passion for human capital development is most evident through his Endowment initiative, anchored on the SAIL Empowerment Foundation. The Foundation, funded from his personal resources, his wife’s contributions, and the goodwill of well-wishers, focuses on uplifting underserved communities through various social interventions.

A flagship program of the SAIL Empowerment Foundation is the SAIL Innovation Lab, which focuses on empowering young people through innovation and technology. The Academy, located in Ikorodu, Lagos, offers world-class training facilities managed by the best in class faculty led by Co-Creation Hub (CcHub), a foremost technology and innovation company in Africa, with offices in Lagos, Nairobi, Kigabi, South Africa and London.

Some of the programs currently running in the facility are: Tech Talent Development; Start-up Accelerator; STEM; Teachers’ Fellowship; Data Science; and Soft skills. Average program tenure is about six (6) months, and all programs are free of charge for the participants. To date over 9, 000 constituents have benefited from this program. This initiative reflects Senator Abiru’s commitment to equipping the next generation with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru holds a B.Sc Economics from Lagos State University, and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (FCIB). He is an alumnus of both Lagos Business School (LBS) and Harvard Business School (USA).

Tokunbo Abiru retired from banking in August 31st, 2020 and he is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the National Assembly since December 2020.

Professor Olanrewaju Olaniyan, the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo is a Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan. He has over 27 years of research, consulting and tertiary teaching experience in Economics of education, poverty, and welfare analysis. He also has experience in social policy work in developing countries through which he had been able to interact and work with senior-level technocrats and officials.

During 2003-4, he led a team organised by the National Planning Commission of Nigeria to prepare the Social Protection Policy for Nigeria. He was engaged as a World Bank consultant in 2006 -2007 to assist the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) in Nigeria to develop her Participatory Poverty Monitoring and Evaluation framework. Between 2003 and 2005, he was the Nigerian country Team leader for a 5-country research study on Private schools serving low-income families supported by the Templeton Foundation and coordinated by EG West Centre, University of Newcastle, United Kingdom. He was also a member of the national technical team that prepared the National Health Accounts for Nigeria in 2009. He was the team leader for Nigeria on the 5-country study on Shaping Social Protection in Nigeria: The National Transfer Accounts Approach, Research sponsored by the IDRC, Canada, October and which lasted for three years between 2008 and 2011.

Since 2018, the Health Policy Training and Research Programme (HPTRP), the University of Ibadan, which he leads had been an institutional partner of the United Nations Population Fund examining Demographic Dividend Issues and how generational transfers affect different lifecycles of the Nigerian population. He has consulted widely for, and/or received research grants from many organizations/agencies among which are: the World Bank, World Health Organization, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNFPA, FAO, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ottawa, Canada; African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Partnership for Transforming Health Systems (PATHS), Population Council, National Planning Commission, Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Finance, Nigeria and National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) in Nigeria.

He was a Senior Associate Member, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom as well as visiting Research scholar to Cornell University, Ithaca, USA, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom and the University of Hawaii, USA.
