Nigeria has intensified plans to export electricity following successful synchronisation with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) , even as domestic demand on the national grid remains low. Officials described the synchronisation as a major technical milestone that enables power trade with 14 African countries.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu said Nigeria will sustain local supply, noting that about 60 per cent of generation companies now comply with the Free Governor Control Order.
Nigeria currently produces 600 MW for export but sends only 350 MW to Benin, Togo and Niger due to weak national demand. Stakeholders said regional trade will generate foreign exchange, attract investment and support grid stability.
However, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that international customers paid only 51 per cent of their second-quarter 2025 invoices.
