Nigeria has intensified plans to export electricity following successful synchronisation with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) , even as domestic demand on the national grid remains low. Officials described the synchronisation as a major technical milestone that enables power trade with 14 African countries.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu said Nigeria will sustain local supply, noting that about 60 per cent of generation companies now comply with the Free Governor Control Order.

Nigeria currently produces 600 MW for export but sends only 350 MW to Benin, Togo and Niger due to weak national demand. Stakeholders said regional trade will generate foreign exchange, attract investment and support grid stability.

However, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that international customers paid only 51 per cent of their second-quarter 2025 invoices.

Following the conclusion of COP30 in Belรฉm, Brazil, Nigeria finds itself at a critical juncture in its implementation. As Africa's most populous nation and largest economy, Nigeria must now translate the outcomes of COP30 into concrete action to achieve universal energy access for its over 220 million citizens, while delivering on its ambitious Net Zero commitment by 2060.

With approximately 71% of Nigeria's population lacking access to reliable energy, the country exemplifies the urgent need to operationalise the global agreements reached in Belรฉm. The post-COP30 period presents a crucial window for assessing how the conference outcomes address systemic gaps in the climate finance architecture, particularly for developing nations undertaking just transitions.

Nigeriaโ€™s Energy Transition Plan (ETP), launched in 2022, outlines a pathway to achieve five key objectives: lifting 100 million people out of poverty, driving economic growth, providing modern energy services to the entire population, mitigating oil sector job losses, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. The plan requires $1.9 trillion over 30 years, including $410 billion by 2030, underscoring the importance of climate finance outcomes from COP30.

For Nigeria, COP30 represented both opportunity and challenge. Negotiations addressed the climate finance gap, the design of just transition pathways, and strategies for accelerating the adoption of
renewable energy. However, the question now is: what next? Nigeria must translate the outcomes of COP30 into actionable national policies, stronger partnerships, and real investments that address energy access, promote a fair transition, and close its finance gap.

The ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฒ will provide a platform for Nigerian policymakers, financiers, private sector leaders, and civil society to reflect on the outcomes of COP30 and chart next steps for Nigeria. The conversation will connect global commitments to local action, ensuring Nigeria leverages COP30 to advance its energy and climate agenda.
