We pray for The Episcopal Church of South Sudan (ECSS), which emerged from missionary efforts by the Church Missionary Society in 1899. Originally part of the united Sudanese church, it became fully autonomous in 1976 as the Episcopal Church of Sudan. After the partition of Sudan in 2017, it reorganised into the distinct Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, comprising 8 internal provinces and 61 dioceses, serving approximately 3.5 million Anglicans.
The church emphasises pastoral care, education, healthcare, peace-making, and theological training, maintaining unity amid regional instability.
Since 2018 the province has been led by The Most Rev’d Justin Badi Arama, former Bishop of Maridi. Under his leadership, ECSS has introduced a new Common Prayer Book, promoted church-led independence and accountability, and addressed internal governance challenges. The ECSS is deeply engaged in national reconciliation and development, serving as a unifying institution amid political and ethnic fragmentation in South Sudan.
