Who do you want to become

When we are 16 we get asked “What do you want to do after school?”

When we are 18 we get asked “What do you want to do after college?”

When we are 21 we get asked “What do you want to do after university?”

Most of us don’t have an answer, and that’s ok.

Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, unexpected detours, and moments of profound transformation. From the moment we step into adolescence, society bombards us with questions about our future. These inquiries often linger in the back of our minds, haunting us with the pressure to have it all figured out. But the truth is, most of us don’t have all the answers, and that’s perfectly okay.

Plans, like the tides of the ocean, ebb and flow with the changing currents of life. What we envision for ourselves at 16 may look drastically different by the time we reach 21, and that’s not only normal but expected. The beauty of life lies in its unpredictability, its ability to surprise us and challenge our preconceived notions of the future. It’s okay if your plans change along the way; it’s all part of the journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

The fear of change often holds us back from pursuing our true passions and living a life that aligns with our deepest desires. We cling to the familiar, even if it brings us unhappiness, because stepping into the unknown is daunting. But imagine for a moment the possibilities that await on the other side of fear. What if you allowed yourself to dream without limitations? What if you dared to chase after your wildest aspirations, no matter how improbable they may seem?

At the core of it all lies a simple yet profound question: “Who do I want to become?” This question transcends the boundaries of age, career, and societal expectations. It invites us to explore the essence of our being, to envision the kind of person we aspire to be and the life we long to live. What traits do you wish to embody? What career path ignites your passion? What lifestyle aligns with your values? These are the questions that pave the way for a life of purpose and fulfillment.

The power to shape your destiny rests squarely in your hands. You are the author of your own story, the architect of your own reality. It’s easy to blame external circumstances or societal constraints for our perceived limitations, but the truth is, the only thing holding us back is ourselves. You have the power to transcend the boundaries of fear and doubt, to step boldly into the unknown and create the life you’ve always imagined.

As you navigate the uncertain waters of life, remember that you are not alone. Embrace the fluidity of plans, the inevitability of change, and the boundless potential that lies within you. Dare to dream big, to chase after your passions with unwavering determination, and to carve out a path that is uniquely yours. Remember, the journey of self-discovery is not about reaching a destination but rather embracing the journey itself. So go forth with courage and conviction, knowing that the power to transform your life lies within you.

A3 THINGS MY THERAPIST TAUGHT ME ABOUT PROCESSING EMOTIONS

When I was 22 I found an amazing therapist on whose purple couch I have spent numerous hours talking, crying and laughing. On that purple couch I discovered that I had repressed my emotions for so long, and I also discovered how to do the opposite: process them. So that is exactly what I will talk to you about in this post!

Acceptance

The first thing I learned is that it is okay to feel sad, angry, alone, ashamed or whatever it is that you are feeling. You are allowed to feel and once you start accepting your emotions instead of judging them, you are already halfway there (yay!). Whenever you feel emotions emerging, simply feel the sensation in your body and let it be there without judgement, but with acceptance and even curiosity. Welcome the emotion; name it and journal about it. This way you show yourself that you are allowed to have emotions and that you do not have to repress them.

Let it out

When emotions arise, try to sit down with your eyes closed and feel the physical sensations that come with it. For me, emotions mostly feel like a tight feeling in my chest or in my throat. Or they feel like a pit in my stomach or heaviness on my shoulders. If I suppress my feelings and judge them by being ashamed or angry for feeling like that, I also suppress the physical sensations attached to it. It is like a ball you are trying to push under water; it simply doesn’t work. So instead, focus on the physical sensations (not on the thoughts that are running through your mind) and just let them out. If you feel too uneasy to sit still, going for a walk and focusing again on the physical sensations is a good alternative.

Notice how after a while the sensations become weaker and weaker until they disappear. Because once you allow the emotion (which is basically just energy) to pass through your body, the feeling will resolve. While if you try to suppress the emotion, the feeling will last.

Self-compassion

Most importantly, be kind to yourself throughout this process. Because remember, it is okay to feel. You are allowed to have emotions. So when they arise, treat yourself with kindness!

These lessons were a game changer for me and whenever I feel emotional, I try to remember them. Even though it is still a work in progress, I finally know how to process my emotions and I have noticed a huge change in my physical and mental health. Hopefully, you will be able to do the same!
