Minister Seeks Stronger Partnerships to Tackle Cancer Burden

FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, has stressed the need for collaborative efforts in the battle against cancer,
which remains one of the country’s most significant public health challenges.

Mahmoud made this call at the opening ceremony of the 2025 International Cancer Week held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre in Maitama, Abuja.

She noted that the theme, “Redefining the Future of Cancer Prevention, Access, and Equity for All”, underscores the urgent need to guarantee all Nigerians, regardless of background, timely and affordable access to prevention and treatment services.

The Minister emphasised that cancer continues to be a leading cause of illness and death globally, with Nigeria facing the impact directly.

She outlined the FCTA’s ongoing commitment to supporting cancer prevention, citing sustained investments in awareness campaigns, early detection programmes, and public-private partnerships.

Mahmoud reiterated the administration’s goal to strengthen the healthcare system, focusing on disease prevention and accessible, quality care for all FCT residents.

Addressing the need for broad-based action, the Minister said the fight against cancer extends beyond medical interventions, requiring empathy, education, innovation, and research investment.

She commended the role of International Cancer Week in fostering dialogue, encouraging partnerships, and mobilising collective action to alter the fate of families and communities affected by cancer.

Mahmoud commended the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, the Nigeria Cancer Society, and all partners for their dedication.

She, therefore, reaffirmed the FCTA’s ongoing support for initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery, fostering partnerships, and building a future free of cancer.

Ghana Set to Host 2025 African Women Conference (AWC) In November

The Republic of Ghana is set to host the 2025 African Women Conference (AWC) this November from 26 to 28, bringing together women leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and advocates from across Africa and the diaspora to discuss pathways for advancing gender equity, leadership, and sustainable development across the continent.

The high-level conference, themed "Legacy Meets Innovation: Women Forging New Pathways for Africa’s Sustainable Development," will provide a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, and partnership building aimed at strengthening women’s participation in governance, innovation, and economic empowerment.

A press statement issued by the Chairperson Planning Committee, Aisha A Adamu, and made available to journalists in Abuja, indicates that the 9th edition of the conference is expected to feature keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and strategic roundtables.

She said the AWC will attract distinguished personalities including First Ladies, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Heads of International Organizations, Civil Society Leaders, and Women in Business from various African countries.

Speaking ahead of the event, Adamu noted that the choice of Ghana reflects the country’s enduring commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and the empowerment of women.

"This decision to shift the conference from South Africa to Ghana follows broad consultations with partners, delegates, and regional coordinators across Africa.

"The shift is not a deviation but a strategic step to enhance accessibility, inclusiveness, and participation—core values on which AWC was founded," the statement noted.

The statement revealed that countries like Namibia, Morocco Rwanda, the Gambia Ethiopia, Zambia, and now Ghana in West Africa have hosted previous editions, while Nigeria is expected to host the 10th edition in 2026.

She added that this year’s edition will focus on digital inclusion, climate resilience, leadership mentoring, and financing for women-led enterprises — critical areas shaping the continent’s development agenda.

This year’s gathering is expected to produce a Joint Communiqué and Action Framework that will guide national and regional policies toward deepening gender inclusion and institutional reforms that uplift women and girls across Africa.

Recall that the African Women Conference, since its inception, has served as a rallying point for African women to share experiences, strengthen solidarity, and chart actionable steps toward achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Nigeria @65: FCTA Unveils Two Flagship Health Intitiatives

As part of activities to mark Nigeria 65th independence anniversary, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has launched the free distribution of Mother–Baby Kits and the Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project.

During the official launch at the Asokoro district hospital in Abuja, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud noted that the two health flagship programmes represent a holistic vision of health: protecting mothers and newborns during childbirth while safeguarding families from the dangers of household air pollution.

Mahmoud, also noted that the initiatives symbolize the administration’s resolve to invest in both immediate healthcare needs and long-term environmental sustainability.

The Minister further explained that the Mother–Baby kits, contained essential medical items and consumables, that would support safe labour, delivery, and neonatal care for women and babies across the FCT.

According to her, "No woman should face childbirth without the tools and support she needs, and no child should begin life without adequate care.

"These kits reflect our deep commitment to maternal and child health and to ensuring that every mother and baby are given the best start possible."

She, however, described the Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project, as a bold, forward-looking initiative designed to reduce indoor air pollution in vulnerable households.

Mahmoud emphasized that by replacing polluting fuels such as firewood, charcoal, and kerosene with smart, efficient Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cookers, the administration is addressing one of the silent but deadly health risks in the homes: respiratory disease caused by smoke inhalation.

The Minister affirmed that these two transformative programmes are part of a broader transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking further, Mahmoud said the administration has strengthened its workforce through improved conditions, and training investments, while infrastructure upgrades—from hospital renovations including call rooms to the establishment of a Public Health Emergency Operations Centre—have boosted efficiency and resilience.

She, therefore, used the occasion of Nigeria 65th independence anniversary to call on Nigerians to recommit themselves to building an FCT where every home is healthier, every birth is safer, and every breath is cleaner.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Mandate Secretary FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, revealed that every year, Nigeria continues to face unacceptably high rates of maternal and infant mortality.

She lamented that despite progress made, too many women still lose their lives during childbirth, and too many newborns do not live to see their first birthday.

"One major reason for these preventable deaths is the lack of access to clean, safe, and essential supplies during delivery.

"The Renewed Hope Mother-Baby Kit initiative is designed to bridge that gap. Each kit contains basic but critical items needed to ensure a hygienic and safe delivery both for the mother and the child", she noted.

She reiterated the FCT Administration's, commitment under the leadership of Barr. Nyesom Wike, to investing in strategic health interventions that have a direct impact on the lives of the rural people.

Edo State Government Approves Revised Supplementary Budget of N799 Billion for 2025

The Edo State Executive Council has approved a revised supplementary budget of N799.820 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, up from the initial N675.220 billion, representing an increase of approximately N125 billion, or 18 percent.

The approval followed an emergency executive meeting presided over by the Chairman-in-Council and Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Briefing after the meeting, the Commissioner for Finance, Emmanuel Okoebor, explained the rationale behind the adjustment and emphasized the government's commitment to infrastructure development.

He explained: “Previously we have a budget of N675 billion with recurrent expenditure having about 33 percent and capital 67 percent. The new revised budget now has about 70 percent for capital expenditure as against 30 percent for recurrent expenditure. It shows the commitment of governor Monday Okpebholo in infrastructural development in Edo state."

Okoebor further explained the size and nature of the increment.

He said: "The increment in the budget is about N125 billion, which signifies about 18 percent of the previous budget. Recurrent increased with about N12 billion, while capital is about N113 billion from the previous one. Given about 25 percent increment in Capital expenditure and just 5 percent increment in recurrent expenditure.

"It clearly shows that the government is concerned about infrastructural development making Edo people happy. We have done about 254KM of road across the state, and many more construction works are ongoing.

"Recurrent expenditure has about 5 percent increment as the increase in minimum wage necessitated that increment including a lot of employment the present administration did in hospital management board for over 1000 and it needs to be captured.

"The budget has been increased by N125 billion, which is about 18 percent, and capita expenditure about 25 percent increment, from N450 billion to N563 billion."

According to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohombamu, the revised budget is expected to be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and passage.

“NO CASE OF EBOLA IN THE FCT” – HEALTH SECRETARY
..SAYS SURVEILLANCE HAS BEEN HEIGHTENED

…SHEDS MORE LIGHT ON CALLED-OFF STRIKE BY RESIDENT DOCTORS

The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Secretariat, Dr Dolapo Fasawe has allayed concerns over a report of a suspected outbreak of Ebola disease in the FCT.

Addressing the Press in Abuja, on Friday, September 19, 2025, the Mandate Secretary stressed that the FCT is free of Ebola disease.

She confirmed that a suspected case of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory tested negative for both Ebola and Marburg diseases, effectively allaying public fears and unverified rumours.

Dr Fasawe commended the robust health infrastructure and proactive measures put in place by the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, which, she said, enabled the rapid detection and containment of the potential threat.

The Secretary clarified that the suspected case involved an individual, identified as "Patient X" in the FCT, for reasons of confidentiality, who had a travel history from Rwanda, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo where Ebola has been confirmed.

She commended the health-seeking habit of the patient, who she said went directly to a hospital upon feeling ill, praising the hospital for following infectious disease protocols by immediately isolating the patient and contacting the health authorities.

"This is not the first suspected case we have had this year, but due to an effective and efficient surveillance system put in place by this administration, we have been able to follow protocols better than other states", the Secretary stated. She highlighted the recent commissioning of an Emergency Operations Centre and the active surveillance team as key to the swift response.

Noting that the FCT remains Ebola-free, Dr Fasawe said the FCT Health Secretariat is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to secure all borders, particularly the air border, to ensure more vigilance for individuals arriving from countries with confirmed epidemics.

The Secretary appealed to members of the press to verify information before publishing to prevent unnecessary panic and stigmatisation. She also issued a direct public health message to all residents, urging them to improve their health-seeking habits.

"Every fever is not malaria", she said. "If you have any sign of illness, especially with a fever or any abnormal bleeding from the nose, ears, eyes, or any other or***ce, it is a very big emergency. You must report to the nearest health centre immediately".

Additionally, the Secretary provided an update on the FCT Minister's recent approval for the payment of health workers' allowances and the employment of new doctors. She confirmed that 37 doctors have already been employed, with plans to hire close to 300 more healthcare professionals in the shortest possible time.

Dr Fasawe, however, stressed that the necessary bureaucratic procedures would be followed in implementing the Minister’s approval to ensure a lasting solution and mitigate future agitation by FCT health workers.

According to her, “In every organization, both public and private sectors, there is documentation, there is uploading, there is verifying, there is ensuring that the payment systems is not distorted and this is not a one-time payment.

“The good thing about the Minister’s approval is that we will not have this agitation again. For his approvals to be sustainable, we need time for administrative purposes. I cannot give you a definite time but I can tell you for example, the low hanging fruits like employing more doctors is already in effect. He has given a large number. As of today, 37 doctors out of that number have been employed and we are in the process of employing close to 300 healthcare workers.

“In the shortest possible time, this is a priority to the Minister; every allowance will be paid so that we do not come back to this agitation again next year. We have to put in place sustainable systems to ensure that these people are paid automatically. That is why it cannot be a quick fix and next year we are back to this table again discussing doctors’ strike”, she stated.

Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Dr Osundayo Tope Zenith thanked the FCT Minister for his kind heart in acceding to the requests of the Association of Resident Doctors.

He explained that the recent strike action by the ARD was not politically motivated but was rather aimed at drawing the attention of the Minister to the challenges of the health sector in the FCT.

According to him, “The essence of all that we are doing is to draw his attention. It is not that we are a political stooge or we are trying to fight the FCT Minister or to fight anybody. Nobody is using us. We are doing what is right to get his attention and his attention was gotten. He attended to everything that was listed in our demand.

“We want to appreciate him for being generous, for being a father and we also want to appreciate him because he’s taking matters of health as a priority. He’s been called Mr. Project and apart from the projects, he has also approved the demands from the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FCTA”, he said.

The President also extended appreciation to the Mandate Secretary, FCT Health Secretariat for her role in resolving the contending issues of the health workers.

Also present at the briefing were: the Permanent Secretary, Health Secretariat, Dr Babagana Adams, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and social media to the FCT Minister, Mr Lere Olayinka and the Chairman of FCTA, ARD, Dr George Obong.

CP AJAO SAYS FCT POLICE HAS RECORDED BREAKTHROUGH IN CRIME FIGHTING, PREVENTION

PRESS BRIEFING BY THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, FCT COMMAND,

CP AJAO S. ADEWALE, psc, mnips, ON 19TH SEPTEMBER, 2025

PROTOCOL

Distinguished members of the press,

I warmly welcome you to the FCT Police Command Headquarters. Today’s press briefing reflects our ongoing commitment to keep you, and by extension the general public, informed of the sustained efforts of the Nigeria Police Force in safeguarding lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory.

As you are aware, effective policing thrives on transparency, partnership, and timely information. In this spirit, we have invited you here to share some of our recent breakthroughs, particularly in the fight against kidnapping, armed robbery, vehicle theft, drug trafficking, and other related crimes.

What you will see and hear today are not just statistics or exhibits, but clear evidence of the resilience of the FCT Police Command, the synergy with other security agencies, and the cooperation of well-meaning residents of the FCT.

1. RESCUE OF KIDNAPPED VICTIMS / NEUTRALIZATION OF WANTED BANDITS / RECOVERY OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION

On 15th September 2025 at about 2115hrs, armed hoodlums attacked Kpobi and Kpaduma 3 Villages under Guzape. Two vigilantes sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. Sadly, one of them, Bako Pwaza (M), later died at the National Hospital, Abuja. The attackers attempted to kidnap two young ladies, but through a coordinated response team led by myself, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Rapid Response Squad Commander, and other officers, the victims were successfully rescued.

On 17th September 2025 at about 2232hrs, the same group of bandits struck again at Karu, where one Nafiu Idris (M), a staff of the FCTA, Department of Urban Affairs, was abducted. Acting swiftly, the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in synergy with the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, DSS operatives, Hunters, and Vigilantes, launched a clearance operation.

On 18th September 2025 at about 0730hrs, the bandits’ hideout was traced to Zinda Forest, behind the Nigerian Army Estate in Kurudu, bordering Nasarawa State. The gang engaged our operatives in a fierce gun battle, but our team overpowered them. Three (3) of the notorious criminals, including their wanted leader Abdullahi Umar a.k.a. “Duna,” and his lieutenants Buba Ahmadi a.k.a. “Killer” and Habi Sule a.k.a. “Mai-Kudi,” were neutralized.

Items Recovered:
• Two (2) AK-49 rifles with breach numbers 1983 NK 2202 and 1975 SW0924
• Two (2) magazines with seven (7) rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition
• Two (2) Itel handsets
• ATM cards (Access Bank and Wema Bank)
• Two (2) lighters
• Assorted charms and animal horns
• Cash sum of ₦10,000

Further investigation revealed that the neutralized gang leader “Duna” had been responsible for multiple kidnappings in Karu, Guzape, Kpobi, Army Estate Kurudu, and several locations in Nasarawa State.

The gang’s planned attempt to kidnap a resident of Federal Housing Estate, Karu, on 18th September 2025 at about 2200hrs, was successfully foiled due to the proactive raid and dislodgement of their camp.

Proactive anti-kidnapping and anti-banditry patrols are ongoing across border communities and identified hotspots.

2. ANTI-DRUG OPERATION

During the period under review, the Command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit recorded remarkable progress in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse. Eleven (11) notorious drug dealers were arrested in coordinated raids across identified drug black spots in the FCT.

A total of sixty-eight (68) bags of substances suspected to be cannabis and other illicit drugs were recovered. These arrests are critical in disrupting criminal supply chains, reducing the rate of drug-fueled crimes, and keeping harmful substances away from our communities.

3. ARREST OF ARMED ROBBERS (NOTORIOUS “ONE-CHANCE” SYNDICATE)

On 30th April 2025, one Kelvin Okorie (M) of Lugbe reported that he boarded a vehicle to the Central Area, only to be attacked at knife-point by the driver and an accomplice. He was dispossessed of ₦80,000 cash, two mobile phones, and other valuables. His ATM card was also seized, and a total of ₦2,700,000 was withdrawn from his account through POS operators.

Following an intensive investigation by detectives from the Anti-One-Chance Unit “B” and the Surveillance Team, three (3) notorious suspects were arrested:
• Ahmed Mohammed (M)
• Ashafa Ali (M)
• Mohammed Lamido Jabir (M)

They have confessed to the crime, and three (3) operational vehicles linked to their operations, along with several stolen items, were recovered.

4. RECOVERY OF FI****MS

Through coordinated anti-crime operations, the Command recovered:
• Seven (7) fi****ms, including a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle
• Five (5) magazines
• Twenty (20) rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition

These recoveries significantly weaken the firepower of criminals and strengthen public confidence in the capacity of the Police.

5. RECOVERY OF STOLEN VEHICLES

The Command also recovered eighteen (18) stolen vehicles, including two trucks and six truck tires. Nine (9) suspects have been arrested in connection with these cases and will be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.

CONCLUSION

These arrests, rescues, and recoveries are clear evidence of our unyielding resolve to rid the Federal Capital Territory of criminal elements. We cannot and will not allow the reckless acts of a few to endanger the safety, dignity, and well-being of millions of residents and visitors in the FCT.

With the continued support of the public, we will keep building a safer Federal Capital Territory for all.

Thank you.
