2025

Again, we're thrilled to share the success of our recent Breast Cancer Awareness program at Government Science Technical College Garki, Abuja. This impactful event was made possible through collaborations with the Mariam-Atswandeh Cancer Support Foundation , Grace Shehu Foundation, and Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh Impact Foundation.

The session was packed with invaluable insights:

• Heartsmiles Program Manager Favour A Anwana kicked off the event by debunking common myths about breast cancer.
• Salami Mariam, Founder of the Mariam Atswandeh Cancer Support Foundation, provided an insightful introduction to cancer and its risk factors.
• Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh, Founder of the Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh Impact Foundation, led a powerful storytelling session on symptoms and treatment options.
• Grace Shehu, Founder of the Grace Shehu Foundation, conducted an eye-opening and practical demonstration on self-breast examination.

A key moment came from Aniedi David, our Executive Director at Heartsmiles Emotional Care. He empowered the students to become advocates and agents of social change, while fostering empathy for anyone on a cancer journey. He also stressed the importance of mental and emotional well‑being, urging them to proactively visit their school counsellor for psychotherapy or support whenever needed.

The highlight was our interactive simulation, where students put their learning into action! Divided into three teams, they embodied the core pillars of our theme:
• distilled key takeaways, reinforcing that "Early Detection Saves Lives."
• crafted powerful, supportive messages like, "You are strong and you are not alone!"
• committed to tangible steps like prioritizing self-exams, spreading awareness, and supporting loved ones.

We are incredibly proud of our students' enthusiasm and commitment. A huge thank you to the FCT Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, School management and staff of Government Science Technical College Garki, Abuja, our dedicated partners and speakers for making this event so memorable.

Let's continue to spread awareness and support the fight against cancer, together!

Still on 'Beyond Pink Ribbon': Let's Talk about Survivorship & Mental Health

Cancer survivors and fighters face an unseen battle - one that’s just as fierce as the physical fight. The emotional and mental toll of treatment can be overwhelming, affecting self‑esteem, relationships, and overall well‑being.

Dealing with body‑image changes after mastectomy, side effects like hair loss, weight changes, skin issues, fatigue, pain, and cognitive impairment can be especially challenging. The numerous medications also impact physical and emotional health, making daily life harder.

Caregivers, too, bear the weight of this journey, balancing emotional support, practical care, and their own well‑being. They need care and support, too.

Let’s support fighters, survivors, and caregivers with empathy, resources, and love, helping them reclaim their strength and joy.

Join our webinar as we discuss Survivorship and ways to thrive beyond cancer.

Date: Sunday, 9 November 2025
Time: 6:00pm – 7:00pm

Mission Accomplished: Spreading Hope and Knowledge at Philomath University Kuje! ❤️

What an incredible day! We're thrilled to have been invited by Philomath University Kuje to lead a Breast Cancer Awareness program alongside our partner, Mariam Atswandeh Cancer Foundation. 🤩

The energy in the room was inspiring, with the Vice Chancellor, staff, and students all engaged in this conversation. Our Oncology Nurse Partner, Nurse Anene Unyime, was phenomenal in educating the audience on prevention and early treatment! 🙌 Our Program Manager's heartfelt session on mental health and survivorship was a powerful reminder that no one walks alone on their health journey. 🌟

The feedback and gratitude from participants were overwhelming. We're honored to have been given the opportunity to empower, educate, and offer emotional support to the Philomath University community. 🙏

Huge thanks to Philomath University for the invitation. Many thanks to our Program Manager, David, for making this happen.

Let's talk about mental health. Share your story, break the stigma, and support one another.
