Again, we're thrilled to share the success of our recent Breast Cancer Awareness program at Government Science Technical College Garki, Abuja. This impactful event was made possible through collaborations with the Mariam-Atswandeh Cancer Support Foundation , Grace Shehu Foundation, and Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh Impact Foundation.
The session was packed with invaluable insights:
• Heartsmiles Program Manager Favour A Anwana kicked off the event by debunking common myths about breast cancer.
• Salami Mariam, Founder of the Mariam Atswandeh Cancer Support Foundation, provided an insightful introduction to cancer and its risk factors.
• Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh, Founder of the Elizabeth Awo-Ejeh Impact Foundation, led a powerful storytelling session on symptoms and treatment options.
• Grace Shehu, Founder of the Grace Shehu Foundation, conducted an eye-opening and practical demonstration on self-breast examination.
A key moment came from Aniedi David, our Executive Director at Heartsmiles Emotional Care. He empowered the students to become advocates and agents of social change, while fostering empathy for anyone on a cancer journey. He also stressed the importance of mental and emotional well‑being, urging them to proactively visit their school counsellor for psychotherapy or support whenever needed.
The highlight was our interactive simulation, where students put their learning into action! Divided into three teams, they embodied the core pillars of our theme:
• distilled key takeaways, reinforcing that "Early Detection Saves Lives."
• crafted powerful, supportive messages like, "You are strong and you are not alone!"
• committed to tangible steps like prioritizing self-exams, spreading awareness, and supporting loved ones.
We are incredibly proud of our students' enthusiasm and commitment. A huge thank you to the FCT Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, School management and staff of Government Science Technical College Garki, Abuja, our dedicated partners and speakers for making this event so memorable.
Let's continue to spread awareness and support the fight against cancer, together!
