In a significant development, the Ekiti State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Lekan Ogunmoye as the substantive Chief Judge of Ekiti State.

Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy

It seems the buzz around the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy has quieted down, but the ruling itself remains highly significant. The judgment, delivered in July 2024, affirmed that local governments in Nigeria are entitled to financial and administrative autonomy. This ruling prohibits state governors from dissolving elected local government councils and from controlling funds meant for these councils. The funds must now be paid directly to the local governments from the federation account

While the decision initially sparked celebrations, including praise from President Tinubu and other key figures, it appears that attention has shifted to other matters. However, the judgment represents a major legal and constitutional step in ensuring that local governments can operate independently, to improve governance at the grassroots level.

Many have expressed hope that the ruling will lead to more transparency and accountability in local governance, but it remains to be seen how state governments will adjust to these new realities.
