24 AKHA Members Defected To APC -Speaker reveals
..as Effiong Johnson becomes Acting Leader

Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, has announced that 24 out of the 26 members of the House are now affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During plenary session, on Tuesday, Elder Otong revealed that he had received resignation letters from 24 lawmakers who were previously members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The lawmakers, according to the Speaker, cited internal conflicts within the National Working Committee of the PDP as the reason for their departure.

At first, Elder Otong did not address the status of the remaining two members, who have yet to declare their positions regarding the defection, nor did he clarify whether he is among the 24 defectors.

He later announced that the House Leader, Hon. Sunday Johnny, of ONNA state constituency, is now part of the minority PDP in the House and should therefore step down from his previous role.

In Johnny's place, Speaker Otong appointed the Chief Whip, Effiong Johnson of Mbo State Constituency, as the Acting Leader of the House until a new leader is selected.

According to sources within the Assembly, Engr. Uduak Ekpo-Ufot, the representative for the Etinan state constituency, has not joined in the mass exodus to the APC. Alongside Hon. Johnny, Ekpo-Ufot is believed to remain loyal to former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who has yet to respond to the defection of his successor, Governor Eno.

Recently, a wave of prominent figures—including members of the state Executive Council, federal and state lawmakers, local government chairmen, councillors, and political aides—led by Governor Umo Eno, all transitioned from the PDP to the APC.

During a reception party for new APC members on Saturday, Governor Eno explained that his decision to join the All Progressives Congress was partly aimed at strategically aligning the state with the federal government under President Bola Tinubu.

BLOOMBERG: Nigeria Pays Off IMF’s $3.4 Billion Covid Loan to Exit Debt List

Nigeria has paid off $3.4 billion borrowed from the International Monetary Fund during the Covid-19 pandemic, exiting the list of countries that are in debt to the Washington-based lender.

Finance Minister Wale Edun confirmed via text message on Thursday that the loan had been repaid on the agreed terms.

The IMF granted Nigeria emergency assistance in April 2020 as the pandemic shuttered businesses around the world and countries closed their borders.

The West African nation now has no outstanding IMF debt, though the Fund expects it to honor some additional payments of roughly $30 million a year in Special Drawing Rights charges, IMF resident representative for Nigeria Christian Ebeke said in a separate statement.

Still, the repayment is a mark of the country’s improved financial position, with the central bank’s net foreign exchange reserves reaching a three-year high last month.

Nigeria has sought to improve local dollar liquidity after years of running a fixed exchange rate regime that burdened the economy of Africa’s largest oil producer with a wildly overvalued local currency.

President Bola Tinubu free-floated the naira after taking office in 2023 as part of a broader campaign of economic reform, contributing to the currency losing more than 70% of its value against the dollar.

“Governor Umo Eno is carving a niche for himself and for the people of Akwa Ibom State. He is focused on adding value to the state. He is not loud. He doesn’t grandstand. He is not a controversial person, and for that, we are mightily proud of you. You are one person President Bola Ahmed Tinubu holds in high esteem.

I urge every other governor to emulate the standards set by Pastor Umo Eno. There’s no legacy that surpasses that of building our people. There is no monument that will surpass the legacy of health and opportunities. Education is the greatest leveller within a generation.

The son of a poor farmer can become a celebrated icon. Your Excellency, thank you very much for investing in education. I am not playing politics — I’m speaking from the heart. The truth that sets many free is often the truth that many are not prepared to hear. Some people may not be happy with what I am saying, but I am speaking the truth.

This is a Governor in whom the President has a lot of confidence.

Let me therefore commend the Governor and his team for not only adopting the HCD framework, but for localizing its operation and placing people at the center of public policies. This is leadership. This is what it means to govern with vision, foresight, and commitment.”

PDP will not join any coalition whatsoever

The 11 governor’s elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have distanced themselves from a coalition of opposition politicians led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar .

The governor’s under the umbrella of the PDP Governors Forum led by the Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed at their meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday rejected the alignment of forces among gladiators such as Atiku, former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El- Rufai and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
