Newsflash: Ga Traditional Council Halts Igbo Day and New Yam Festival in Accra

Nigeria’s Igbo community in Ghana on Sunday suspended a planned Igbo Day and New Yam Festival in Accra following police intervention to prevent the event from proceeding. Ghana's Ga traditional authorities, who prompted the police, assert that they aim to preserve cultural sovereignty and prevent clashes between Ghanaians and Nigerians.

Leader of the Igbo Community in Ghana, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, while communicating a rescheduling of the event to a later date, stated that the community will engage authorities, assuring of their commitment to promoting unity between the Igbo community and Ghana.

The latest development comes amid controversy about an intention to establish an Igbo kingdom in Ghana.

The Nigerian Senate has unsealed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's office and granted her access to the National Assembly premises. This move comes after a prolonged standoff between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
