Housekeepers play vital roles in every Hotel: My post on LinkedIn
I resumed back to school Hospitality Business School, Lagos after going on a break for restaurant internship (a story for another day). My excitement about resuming back to school knows no bounds. HBS feeling hits differently and I love it.
As of the second week of resuming back to school, we had a class on Housekeeping principles and also did a role-play. The teaching and the exercise made it clear that housekeepers play vital roles in the hotel. From this class and the previous class on P&L (Room Division), it is established that hotels make most of their income from Room Division and housekeeping plays an important role in achieving that success. However, it is observed that housekeepers are always underpaid in many establishments, even though their activities rake in huge income for the establishments.
For instance, HBS as a program for housekeeping, and I am not sure we have many students in that department presently. This only proves two things, which is that housekeepers don't think housekeeping is a career they can build in the hospitality industry, or hotel owners don't see the need to send their housekeepers for outside training. What comes to mind first as a hotel owner or manager is the cost, right? That is why it is necessary to prepare for it in your 'Employ Burden'.
A few things I also learnt from the class that I would love to share with you are:
- Make good uniforms for your housekeepers and make them dress well.
- Build their self-esteem so they don't see themself as cleaners but as housekeepers
- Let them have a first-hand experience of the service of the hotel.
This housekeeping module interests me so much. Personally, I love a clean, well-detailed room and most especially a bed that welcomes me once I enter a room.
If I am asked to pick a department to work in a hotel, my first choice would be the housekeeping department and that is why I will be creating video content to showcase housekeepers/housekeeping department in Hotels.
I salute the hotels that pay their housekeepers well, treat them well, and also let them know they can build a career in the hospitality sector.
If you would love for me to come to your Hotel to create content for your Housekeeping department, please send me a DM.
