The Bishop celebrated the opening service of Holy Eucharistic.
In his sermon, the Very Revd Prof Pic Onwuchei reminded the people that the theme of the Synod, Fight the Good Fight of Faith: An Imperative for all Christians now or never is not a grammar but the topic of the time. He made reference to the story of David defeating Goliath. He said after David had become king, the Philistines returned again to fight the Israelis for the same portion of land. He said that the land they were dragging was not empty but was filled with barley.
The Very Revd Prof Pic, who is currently the Sub Dean of the Cathedral Church of St Luke's Jos, added that the bread with which Jesus fed the five thousand was a barley bread. He pointed out that the devil knows that our faith contains all that is needed for our survival, our sustenance and our nourishment. He said that the devil has attacked the discipline that produced the old generation Christians, where the parents planted godliness in the children with the teachers in school playing another role in that direction.
He said that when the Philistines came to attack, others ran away apart from David and Elezar. He said that many Christians have abandoned the faith and want to do it like the world. He called on the Synod members to join this fight of faith. He concluded with a call for repentance.
After the communion service,
The Ven Onyebuchi Agubesi, of Ohaji Egbema, facilitated the Bible Study.
The Synod has since gone into the plenary session.
