SEMA Issues Flood Alert for Three LGAs, Warns Residents

The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYOSEMA) has issued a flash flood alert for residents of Ibadan, particularly those living in Akinyele, Egbeda, and Oluyole Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The agency is urging residents in these areas to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, SEMA’s Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari, said the Flood Early Warning System’s latest weather forecast indicates heavy rainfall is expected in the affected LGAs.

Mrs. Busari, who noted that the agency works hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Environment and Natural resources, advised that some areas could receive over 100mm (about 4 inches) of rain in the next 24 hours.

Mrs. Busari highlighted that the heaviest rainfall is expected North-East of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the airport.

Her words, “The advice has become imperative to activate the concerned Local Government Authorities and communities to take necessary actions to mitigate the risk of flooding and avoid loss of lives, displacement, and significant damage to property and infrastructure.”

She added that areas around IITA (Akinyele), the airport (Egbeda), and the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN, Oluyole) will experience significant rainfall.

She warned residents that flash floods could affect streets, with low-lying areas flooding rapidly.

Mrs. Busari also added that roads may become difficult or impossible to use, stressing that heavy rain will make driving hazardous.

She advised residents to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters.

“Turn around, don’t drown”, she said.

Busari added, "If you live in a flood-prone area, be prepared to move to higher ground if instructed."

CCII PG, Barr. Ajewole Visits Olubadan-in-Waiting, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Ahead of Coronation

As preparations gather momentum for the formal coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, the President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Sulaimon Ajeniyi Ajewole, has paid a historic courtesy visit to the Olubadan-in-waiting at his Lagos residence.

The high-level visit, which forms part of ongoing traditional consultations and strategic engagements, reaffirmed the collective support of Ibadan sons and daughters—both at home and in the diaspora—for a smooth, honorable, and dignified transition of royal authority.

Chief Ajewole expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm reception and extended the goodwill of the entire Ibadan community to Oba Ladoja. In addressing recent misinformation, he firmly dispelled baseless rumors regarding the monarch-in-waiting’s health and readiness.

“Let it be clearly stated: Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is hale, hearty, and fully prepared to assume the sacred responsibilities of the Olubadan stool. His mental clarity, strength, and visionary leadership remain intact and inspiring,” Chief Ajewole emphasized.

The CCII President-General lauded Oba Ladoja for his lifelong dedication to the development of Ibadanland—both as a former governor and as a revered traditional figure whose passion for his people has never waned.

He urged all sons and daughters of Ibadan to remain united and focused during this transitional period, calling for mutual respect, cultural pride, and unwavering support for the new era about to unfold under Oba Ladoja’s reign.

“This is a defining chapter in the rich history of Ibadanland. We must stand together, guided by our heritage, values, and shared dreams for a more prosperous and respected Ibadan,” he stated.

In closing, Chief Ajewole offered fervent prayers for peace, harmony, and sustained progress in Ibadanland. He called on all traditional leaders, political stakeholders, youth groups, and community associations to fully support the forthcoming coronation ceremony.

“May the reign of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja bring Ibadanland into a new dawn of greatness, dignity, and global admiration,” he concluded.

2027: Tinubu will choose running mate only after… — Presidency

The Presidency has clarified that President Bola Tinubu will select his running mate for the 2027 presidential election only after formally accepting the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination during its convention in 2026.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed this in a recent interview with Daily Trust.

“When I read the report, I dismissed it as a nonissue. In a presidential system, the candidate emerges and selects a running mate.

“That’s what happened under Buhari – he was nominated first and later picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once.

“Once INEC releases the timetable, the party convention will hold, and if the president is nominated again, he will choose his running mate,” he explained.

As the 2027 presidential election draws near, speculation about President Bola Tinubu’s plans for his running mate has been rife, with various stakeholders and interest groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC) weighing in on the matter.

However, the Presidency has now provided clarity on the timeline for Tinubu’s running mate selection, putting an end to the speculation.

With this development, the focus shifts to the APC convention in 2026, where President Tinubu’s nomination will set the stage for his running mate choice.

Meanwhile, Chief Oliver Okpala, Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has strongly condemned what he described as an attempted assault on his principal during the party’s North East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe State over the weekend.

In a statement issued Monday, Okpala said the incident, which involved a group of unruly individuals allegedly targeting the APC National Chairman, was not only irresponsible but a grave threat to democracy and internal party cohesion.

“There is no space for violence in Nigeria’s political space presently. Party members should resort to the civilised tenet of political decency, decorum and comportment in their political activities in the country,” Okpala declared.

Yoruba Youths Urges Southwest Governors, Obas to Act as New Terrorist Group ‘Mahmuda’ Launches Attack on Kwara Community

The Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide (YCYW) has raised an urgent alarm following a deadly attack launched by a newly emerging terrorist group, Mahmuda, on a community in Kwara State. The group has called on all governors in the Southwest region, Yoruba traditional rulers (Obas), and cultural leaders—including the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams—to rise to the occasion and take proactive steps before the situation escalates into the Southwest.

This strong call to action was contained in a statement signed by the Council’s National Coordinator, Asoju Odo Alawode Rahmon, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Sunday.

According to the statement, the attack serves as a grave warning of the growing threat posed by armed groups emerging from the Middle Belt and Northern Nigeria, with a high potential of infiltrating Southwest communities if not swiftly contained.

“The recent violent invasion by the Mahmuda group is not an isolated incident. It is a red alert that must be taken seriously by all stakeholders,” the statement reads. “We urge the governors of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos States—alongside Yoruba traditional rulers and leaders, especially the Aare Onakakanfo—to activate all regional and grassroots security systems to prevent any spread of this terror into our land.”

The Council stressed that unity, vigilance, and coordinated action are urgently needed to protect the integrity, peace, and safety of Yorubaland.

“Delays or inaction could lead to tragic consequences. Now is the time to act,” the statement added.

YCYW also urged the Federal Government to increase support for counter-terrorism efforts and provide intelligence backing to regional security networks such as Amotekun and community-based security initiatives.

The group reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the Yoruba people, their territory, and their heritage. It also called on Yoruba youths to remain vigilant, proactive, and to report any suspicious movement in their communities.

Yoruba Youth Council Condemns Oluwo of Iwo Over "Emir" Title Usage

The Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide (YCYW) has expressed strong disapproval of the recent action of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, over his continuous usage of the title "Emir" — a move considered by the Council as a gross embarrassment to the Yoruba cultural heritage.

This was made known in a press statement signed by the National Coordinator of YCYW, Asoju Odo Alawode Rahmon Akintunde, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

According to Asoju Odo Alawode, "It is rather unfortunate and deeply disappointing that a prominent Yoruba monarch such as the Oluwo of Iwo would continue to ridicule our tradition by parading himself with a title alien to our heritage. This act is not only sacrilegious but also a betrayal of the rich cultural pride the Yoruba people hold dearly."

He further lamented the consistent disregard for Yoruba identity among some elites and traditional leaders, saying, "Why is it that only the Yorubas, out of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, are never content with what we have? Only Yorubas wear Hausa babariga and caps, while the Igbos proudly wear their red caps and the Hausas maintain their cultural attire and dietary customs. Yet, we abandon our goats and continue to patronize their cows. We must begin to take pride in our own."

The Council warned that the continuous erosion of Yoruba values and traditions by those expected to protect and preserve them could lead to an identity crisis among the younger generation.

YCYW called on the Oluwo of Iwo to retrace his steps and desist from further actions that misrepresent the Yoruba culture and monarchy, urging other traditional rulers and stakeholders to uphold the sanctity and uniqueness of the Yoruba heritage.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to defending and promoting the Yoruba cultural identity and warned that any attempt to dilute or mimic other cultures at the expense of Yoruba values would be strongly resisted.

Stop Disgracing Yoruba Tradition – Mogaji Oloko to Oluwo of Iwo

Ibadan Mogaji, Alhaji Abass Oloko, has cautioned the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, against referring to himself as an Emir, saying it disrespects Yoruba heritage.

“The title Emir isn’t part of our culture. Yoruba monarchs should uphold, not dilute, our traditions,” Oloko stated.

He also warned the monarch to stop interfering with the boundary resolution between Oyo and Osun, reminding him that the boundary ends at Odo Oba.
