OLUBADAN SUCCESSION: LADOJA POSTPONES RETURN UNTIL OLAKULEHIN’S MOURNING ENDS
The Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has postponed his return to Ibadan, Oyo State, until July 28, following the 21-day mourning period for the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
Oba Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, died on Monday, July 7, after a brief illness at a private hospital in Jericho, Ibadan. In line with longstanding Ibadan tradition, a 21-day mourning period began on Tuesday, July 8.
A palace source told journalists on Sunday that Ladoja opted to remain away out of respect for the late monarch, emphasizing the need to mourn before any form of celebration.
“He believes if he’s around, it may trigger premature celebrations, which would be inappropriate during this time of mourning,” the source said. “He wants to honour the departed Olubadan fully before making his presence felt.”
In the interim, Ladoja has instructed the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade, and the Ekerin Balogun, Akeem Adewoyin, to reopen the Olubadan Palace at Oke-Aremo to receive mourners on his behalf.
When contacted, Ladoja’s media aide, Adeola Oloko, said he was unaware of the specific date of the Olubadan-designate’s return.
