Tinubu accepts Yakubu’s exit, confers national honour on former INEC boss

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of his second term in office.

Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of the commission, served two five-year terms, with his reappointment in 2020. His tenure has now officially ended.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu commended Professor Yakubu for his service and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

“President Tinubu thanked Professor Yakubu for his services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure,” the statement said.

As a mark of appreciation, President Tinubu has conferred on Professor Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

EPL: Carragher reveals when Man Utd will sack Amorim

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested when Manchester United will sack their manager, Ruben Amorim.

Amorim is currently under intense pressure at Manchester United due to the club’s poor performances so far this season.

Amorim’s side is currently in the 10th position on the Premier League table after seven games.

However, speaking about Amorim, Carragher suggested that the Portuguese would have left Old Trafford before Christmas.

“I don’t like saying a manager should be sacked – it is disrespectful and it is a man’s job – but I am at that point where I do think Ruben Amorim’s job is untenable,” Carragher said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“It is inevitable that this [Amorim’s sacking] is going to happen before Christmas.

2026 WCQ: Super Eagles in limbo with five African teams likely to claim losers’ spots

As the 2026 World Cup qualifying series wraps up in the African zone, five countries are fighting for the four loser’s spots.

A total of nine teams will book automatic spots from the tournament.

Another country will join them, but they will go through play-offs.

These play-offs will haven four teams that finished strongly in second-place behind their group leaders.

Gabon – Group F (19 points): Gabon are behind Cote d’Ivoire, who are flying high with their remaining two fixtures against bottom-table Seychelles and Kenya. Gabon will take on Gambia and Burundi.

Madagascar – Group I (16 points): Madagascar might have to beat Comoros in their next match and hope to finish well against Mali. Ghana, the group leaders, would learn from their past mistakes and might just hold unto their own against Central African Republic and Comoros.

Congo – Group B (16 points): Congo will play Sudan and Togo, both whom sit directly below them. However, they might eventually finish second place below Senegal whose two matches are relatively easy – an away game at South Sudan and a home match against Mauritania.

Burkina Faso – Group A (15 points): Burkina Faso are five points behind Egypt and they will be looking to wrap things up and might finish second should they secure victories against Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Egypt are poised to finish first with matches against Djibouti and Guinea Bissau.

South Africa – Group C (14 points): South Africa suffered a setback after they were deducted three points by FIFA for fielding an ineligible players. EPL: Carragher names English football’s greatest goalscorer

Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has said Erling Haaland is the “greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football”.

Haaland found the back of the net for a ninth match in a row, as City edged a 1-0 win over Brentford on Sunday.

The Norway striker muscled his way through the Brentford’s defence to score his 18th goal for country and club this season.

Carragher went ahead to list some of the greats he believes Haaland is better than.

“I think we’re watching the greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football,” Carragher said on Super Sunday: Extra Time:

“I honestly can’t remember Jimmy Greaves, Dixie Dean and all those players from years ago.

Former England striker, Gary Lineker, has listed six unique qualities Arsenal striker, Viktor Gyokeres has.

Gyokeres has gone six games for Arsenal without scoring a goal for the Premier League North London club.

The seven-time African champions will take on Argentina in a Round of 16 fixture at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago on Wednesday.

The South Americans have an hundred percent record in the competition, having won all their three group games.

Nigeria, on the other hand, managed to escape to the knockout round as one of the best third-placed nations.

Despite the enormity of the task before his team, Zubairu is optimistic they will scale through the hurdle.

The Northern Elders Forum and the Northern Governors Forum have established a new body known as the Northern Nigeria Development Council, NNDC, to coordinate and drive the region’s economic transformation agenda.

The decision followed the signing of the Northern Nigeria Economic Development Charter at the end of the Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialisation Summit, which ended in Abuja on Monday.

NEF Convener, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who signed the communiqué after the summit, pointed out that the proposed council will operate under the joint supervision of the two forums and serve as the institutional framework for implementing the region’s long-term development masterplan.

The communiquè said, “The charter signed by the Northern Governors commits them to establish the NNDC as the dedicated coordinating agency for the region’s economic agenda.”

It further revealed that the NNDC will “serve as the institutional and programme management body to midwife the Regional Integration Agenda of Northern Nigeria.”

It will consolidate strategies in mining, agriculture, power, industrialisation, technology, and related sectors.

The summit, themed “Unlocking Strategic Opportunities in Mining, Agriculture, and Power,” brought together governors, investors, and development partners to explore ways to accelerate growth in the region.

The forum disclosed that over $10bn in investments were pledged across key sectors for implementation over the next five years.

It also emphasised the need for regional economic integration, improved infrastructure, and clear investment policies to attract private capital.

Participants further recommended reforms to ease doing business, standardise public-private partnership frameworks, and institutionalise land administration reforms.

They also proposed the creation of a Security-Investment Coordination Task Force to safeguard critical projects.

The communiqué traced the vision for the new council to the North’s historical industrial base, recalling the 1960s and 1970s when agriculture and agro-processing anchored the region’s economy.

It noted that the new initiative aims to revive that legacy through a modernised, coordinated framework for sustainable growth.

A yet-to-be-known retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State has reportedly died onboard a British Airways, BA, flight from London to Abuja.

According to Daily Trust, the affected flight was diverted to Barcelona, Spain, in the early hours of Monday.

The flight from Heathrow Airport at 11:00 pm on Sunday, October 5, was scheduled to land at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by 5:00 am Monday.

However, at about 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted to El Prat Airport in Barcelona.

VP NEWS could not confirm the incident as of filing this report.

However, British Airways, in a message to passengers, apologised for the disruption and assured them of support.

“Passengers are advised to expect an email with more information and can reach out to the airline’s Live Chat feature for support. British Airways acknowledges the inconvenience and thanks passengers for their patience and understanding,” the airline stated.

EPL: Petit predicts team to win title as Arsenal go top

Former France midfielder, Emmanuel Petit, has predicted that nothing can stop Arsenal from winning the Premier League title this season.

Petit was analyzing last weekend’s games on talkSPORT on Monday.

The Gunners beat West Ham 2-0 to go top of the table, after Liverpool lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Saturday.

Petit has now claimed that the squad depth available to Mikel Arteta will see Arsenal finally win the title for the first time in over two decades.

He said: “I hope they are going to win the title. And I think they are going to win the title.

“Because of the options Arteta has on the bench and the rotations he can make.

“The biggest reason why Arsenal lost the title in the last two seasons was the competition with Liverpool and Manchester City. And that has changed a lot.

Werder Bremen defender, Felix Agu has been ruled out of Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Agu sustained a syndesmosis ligament injury in Bremen’s 1-0 victory over St. Pauli last weekend.

The full-back was replaced by Isaac Schmidt shortly before half-time.

Bremen confirmed on Monday via a statement on their official website that Agu will be sidelined for several months.

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is now expected to name a replacement for the player.

EPL: Scholes questions Chelsea’s decision to let Jackson join Bayern

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has questioned Chelsea’s decision to allow Nicolas Jackson leave Stamford Bridge.

The Senegalese was loaned out to Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window.

Bayern Munich paid an initial loan deal which includes a mandatory obligation to buy if the former Villarreal man plays a certain number of games for the Bundesliga side.

Jackson is a backup to veteran finisher, Harry Kane at the Allianz Arena.

Before heading out of Stamford Bridge, the Senegal international netted 30 times in 81 matches for the west London side having joined from LaLiga side Villarreal for £32m in 2023.

Scholes, who noted that the 24-year-old is not a striker naturally, said the Blues should not have allowed him leave.

“These midfield players as No. 10s [like Chelsea’s Cole Palmer], they need pace up front, they need an Ian Wright up there,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“I don’t think Nicolas Jackson is the greatest finisher, he was never a player you were that confident was going to score if he was running through on goal. I didn’t get that impression with him.

“But at least he gets you up the pitch and he’s got the movement that helps other players because it gives them the space.

“When you’re not playing against pace everyone is pushed up and there’s nowhere to go.”
