CHUKWUDI FINDS WORK
After walking for another day, Chukwudi reached a bigger village.
There, he met a wealthy farmer named Mazi Obinna.
Mazi Obinna needed somebody to help him on his farm.
Chukwudi approached him.
“Sir, please, I am looking for work.”
“What kind of work can you do?” the farmer asked.
“I can do any honest work. Farming, carrying things, cleaning, anything.”
The farmer looked at him.
“What do you want as payment?”
Chukwudi answered:
“I don't need much. Just give me food and somewhere to sleep.”
The farmer agreed.
From that day, Chukwudi became one of the hardest-working young men in the village.
He woke up before the c**k crowed.
He worked on the farm.
He carried water.
He cleaned the compound.
He helped the farmer's children.
He also helped old people in the village.
And whenever he found something that belonged to another person, he returned it.
One day, somebody dropped money at the market.
Chukwudi found it.
Even though he had very little money himself, he did not touch it.
He searched until he found the owner.
The people began to say:
“That boy has a good heart.”
“He may have strange-looking eyes, but his character is beautiful.”
“He is a very well-behaved young man.”

THE JOURNEY INTO THE FOREST
Chukwudi walked for many hours.
The sun became hotter.
His legs became tired.
He had nowhere to sleep and did not know where he was going.
By evening, he reached a thick forest.
Under a big tree, he saw an old man sitting alone.
The old man looked tired and weak.
Chukwudi walked towards him.
“Good evening, Papa. Are you okay?”
The old man raised his head.
“My son, I am not feeling strong. Please, can you help me get to the next village?”
Chukwudi did not hesitate.
He carried the old man's bag on his shoulder and supported him as they walked.
It took them a long time, but Chukwudi did not complain.
When they finally reached the village, the old man brought out some money.
“My son, take this.”
Chukwudi shook his head.
“No, Papa. I didn't help you because I wanted money.”
The old man smiled.
“You have a good heart, my son. God will reward you.”
Chukwudi thanked him and continued his journey.
Unknown to Chukwudi, that old man was going to play an important role in his future.

THE DAY HIS PARENTS SENT HIM AWAY
One morning, after Chukwudi returned from the farm, he saw his father and mother sitting outside their house.
Their faces were serious.
His father looked at him and said:
“Chukwudi, pack your things.”
Chukwudi was confused.
“Pack my things? Papa, where am I going?”
His father looked away.
“You have to leave this house.”
Chukwudi's heart skipped.
“Papa, what have I done?”
“You have not done anything,” his father replied.
“Then why are you sending me away?”
His mother began to cry.
His father took a deep breath.
“People are talking about your eyes. They say your eyes are strange. We don't want trouble in this family.”
Chukwudi stood there silently.
He could not believe what he was hearing.
His own parents were rejecting him because of the colour of his eyes.
He looked at his mother.
“Mummy, even you?”
His mother covered her face and cried.
Chukwudi was heartbroken.
But he did not insult his parents.
He did not curse them.
He simply entered the room, packed a few clothes into a small bag, and came back outside.
Before leaving, he turned to his mother.
“Mummy, please don't cry. I will be fine.”
Then he looked at his father.
“Papa, I don't hate you.”
With those words, Chukwudi picked up his bag and walked away.

THE BLUE-EYED VILLAGE BOY
A Nigerian Folktale About Good Character, Patience, and the Blessing of a King
Long, long ago, in a peaceful village somewhere in the heart of Nigeria, there lived a young man called Chukwudi.
Chukwudi was nineteen years old. He was not from a rich family, and his father was not a chief. His father, Okechukwu, was a farmer, while his mother, Adanma, sold foodstuff in the village market.
Chukwudi was a quiet and well-behaved young man.
He respected elders.
He helped the weak.
He never stole.
He never insulted anybody.
And whenever somebody needed help, Chukwudi was always among the first people to offer assistance.
But there was one thing about him that made him different from everybody else.
Chukwudi had bright blue eyes.
His eyes were beautiful, clear, and unusual.
Whenever he walked through the village, people would turn and look at him.
Some people admired his eyes.
Some were afraid of them.
And some started spreading rumours.
“He is not a normal boy.”
“Look at his eyes!”
“Something must be wrong with him.”
Slowly, those rumours entered the ears of Chukwudi's father.
And instead of protecting his son, fear entered his heart.
