Oborevwori Keeps to His Promise on Inspecting Projects in the 25 LGAs
By Oma Rogers
In line with the MORE Agenda, the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, is maintaining the pace of ensuring that projects carried out in every part of the state is delivered according to specification.
Oborevwori through his Special Adviser on Project Monitoring and Audit, Engr. Dr. Goodnews Agbi, visited projects in Oshimili south, Isoko North, Isoko South and Ndokwa East local government areas, ensuring that contractors are not layed back in delivering jobs as at when due.
Begining with Oshimili south, Agbi visited the Construction of the 6-lane access road to Asaba waterfront city project, where he encouraged the contractor handling the project to work on the finishing.
Agbi while inspecting the road alongside his team of engineers commended the level of work done and advised that they don't compromise standards. "I can see your steel work is going on very well, but for the finishing, try and improve on it especially for your median. Every other thing is okay. Your slab is very good but for the median, try and give it some good finishing. Delta State Government is particular about quality."
The CEO North China Construction Nigeria Limited, Osadebe Osakwe, while addressing newsmen said; "75% of the project has been achieved. The road was handed over to us on the 27th of September last year and we have one year to do it, as it is now we are ahead. What we now need is for government to support us to do setback six meters. Particularly from Channel 600 to 300. Another thing is that building that is almost on the road, it needs to be removed. It's not part of the ones for compensation. For us to protect the road, we need to remove that building."
Responding to the question of draining the waters on the sides of the road, Osakwe said; "As for the water, government has a program, a different program, where they will channel the water to. They are already doing it."
Visiting the reconstruction of Ellu/Ovrode/Ofagbe/Orie-Irri/Okpe-Isoko/Uro Irri/Ada-Irriin of Isoko North and Isoko South LGA, Agbi noted that an agreement had been reached between community members and the contractor to resolve all outstanding dispute.
In his words; "Before now, there was a problem with the community but project monitoring came in and resolved that seeming conflict. After an upward review, project monitoring met with the community, Isoko Development Union and the Managing Director and it was agreed that all the parties should work in harmony. The idea of disrupting the job will no longer take place. Everything is going on well and in two months time we'll be back to see how far they have gone with the job."
Meanwhile, the Engr. on site, Henry Onuorah, appealed to the people of Ofagbe to be patient with them as in no distant time they will have a new road for their use. "There's been a very friendly relationship with community members. We appeal to the community members to be patient with us but I disagree with the idea of them saying that we destroyed the old road they were managing. The elevation of the new road is higher than the old one. So, we had to insert culverts at some places and now we are on alignment with the old road so, it's looking very good. The idea is to lift it up so that flooding can be managed. We should be able to correct all that and give them a new road which will be higher than what they used to have. By October, we will begin to lay asphalt."
Also at the construction of Idheze Internal roads phase 1 idheze town in Isoko South LGA, the Special Adviser instructed the contractor to excavate the top soil deeper than what had been done and ensure that the job is done according to the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation, BEME.
Agbi hinted that "We saw on social media where some persons called out the Engineer that he was doing substandard jobs. So we came here to find out the position. We will simply just advise that he goes deeper with the excavation of the top soil and fill with sharp sand. Sharp sand is very good with water."
The Contractor in response to the Special Adviser said, "We have had the best relationship with community members except for lately. Some few individuals who didn't understand the terms and the provision for the job should have at least asked questions before going on social media. But so far, everything is settled and we should be done with this project in October."
Chairman of Idheze community, Joseph Okoro, and the youth leader, Louis Agbidi, respectively in confirmation of what the contractor posited, said all issues have been resolved as they commend the project monitoring team for keeping contractors on their toes in delivering quality jobs.
The Special Adviser while rapping up his movement, also visited the reconstruction of the failed Uzere/Asaba Ase culverts and rehabilitation of the failed sections along Uzere-Asaba Ase road in Ndokwa East and Isoko South LGAs, acknowledging the Governor for heeding to the call of Deltans and providing good roads and bridges that will stand the taste of time.
