My Husband Is Not a Magician - First Lady, Remi Tinubu

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with her husband, President Bola Tinubu, saying he is not a magician.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Sunday, October 1, the First Lady said: “All we inherited are things that had happened many years ago; we are not here to put blame on any administration but to fix what has been damaged.

My husband is not a magician; he is going to work and I believe and hope that we will have peace in this country; the best is yet to come to us.

Good governance can only be impactful if the people follow the example of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who embodied the fruit of the spirit, including love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance and forgiveness.

A Nigeria of abundance has begun, and to be part of the greatness that God has started in the nation, Nigerians must look beyond their current realities and embrace hope anew.”

Manufacturers Sack 3,567 Workers, Unsold Goods Hit ₦‎272 Billion – MAN

No fewer than 3,567 jobs were lost in the manufacturing sector in the first half of 2023 according to figures obtained by The PUNCH from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

MAN disclosed this in its half yearly review of the economy, which was released on Tuesday.

According to the report, employment generation in the manufacturing sector declined to 6,428 in the first half of 2023.

This was 32.8 per cent reduction in employment generation capacity when compared with 9,559 jobs generated in the first half of 2022.

The report read partly, “In the same vein, a total of 3,567 jobs were lost in the first half of 2023, indicating 1,855 more jobs lost when compared with the 1,709 jobs lost in the corresponding half of 2022, and 850 more jobs lost when compared with 2708 jobs lost in the last half of 2022.”

MAN said the decline in the number of jobs created in the sector during the period further highlighted the unfriendly business environment, resulting from the hasty policies and residual effect of the currency redesign policy that led to the naira crunch.

The report also stated that the inventory of unsold finished products in the manufacturing sector increased to N271.9bn during the first half of 2023, compared to N187bn in the corresponding period of 2022.

This indicated a substantial rise of N84.88bn or 45.4 per cent over the timeframe. It also showed N11.64bn or 4.1 per cent decline when compared with the inventory value of N283.6bn recorded in the second half of 2022.

“This increase in inventory can be attributed to a weakened purchasing power of the consumers, brought about by diminishing real household income resulting from the ongoing escalation of inflationary pressures, compounded by the scarcity of naira in the first quarter of the year and the aftermath of the subsidy removal,” the report said.

‘I Will Shoot GDP To $1trn In 8 Years’ – New CBN Gov, Cardoso Vows

The newly confirmed Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso has disclosed plans to shore up the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, to $1 trillion in eight years.

Cardoso spoke while answering questions from senators during his screening and confirmation as the governor of the apex bank.

Those confirmed as deputy governors are: Emem Usoro, Philip Ikeazor, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, and Bala Bello

He assured that the ratified board will adopt a number of strategies including short term and medium terms goals to repair the economy.

According to him, to achieve stability in Nigeria’s exchange rate, measures must be put in place towards ensuring a healthy balance of payment and diversification of the economy.

“When you look at the dimension of inflation, we will be doing evidence-based monetary policy. We shall not be making decisions based on a whim.

“We will significantly rebound the infrastructural demand with respect to ensuring that our data gathering capacity is enhanced so we can make decisions based on proper data,” he said.

Ex-FIRS Boss Nami Approved N11bn ‘Suspicious’ Payments After His Exit

After his sudden exit as chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami went on to approve N6 billion as payments to several contractors and consultants, TheCable can report.

Nami, who was succeeded by Zacchaeus Adedeji, greenlit the payments two days after he was sacked on September 14, according to documents seen by TheCable.

Officials privy to the development — but not authorised to speak on the matter — said the former FIRS boss directed staff of the finance, audit, and internal affairs departments to work on Saturday and Sunday to perfect some financial transactions while files were allegedly moved from the agency’s headquarters to his house, where they were said to have been “backdated and signed”.

Sources familiar with the matter told TheCable that Nami also moved about N5 billion to the account of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) from the FIRS account.

I Didn’t Interfere, Polls Reflected Nigerians’ Choices - Buhari

Following the conduct of the presidential, governorship and legislative elections, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, in Abuja, said he is proud of the Nigerian electorate who have realised their power and “ultimately decided who won or lost.”

However, he expressed sadness that some candidates, especially those of the All Progressives Congress, lost their bid.

“I am unhappy that some candidates lost in the election. But I am inspired by the fact that voters were able to make their own decision, to decide who won and who lost,” Buhari told the outgoing United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, at the State House, Abuja.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Tuesday titled ‘Recent elections proof of nation’s voter vibrancy, maturity, says President Buhari.’

The PUNCH reports that the February 25 and March 18 elections, were marred by varying degrees of irregularities and violence, which drew criticism from large sections of the electorate and the international community.
