West African Nations Of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali Break Free from ICC

Iliyasu S. Yahaya
Abuja, Nigeria

In a significant development, the military-led governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have jointly announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The decision, made public on September 22, 2025, cites the court's perceived ineffectiveness and neo-colonialist tendencies as primary reasons for this collective action.

Some of the reasons behind the withdrawal are that the three West African nations, which have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) confederation, argue that the ICC has failed to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression effectively. They view the ICC as an instrument of neo-colonial repression, targeting actors outside the institutionalized circle of impunity while ignoring crimes committed by others. According to the governments, the ICC's inability to handle and prosecute proven war crimes and other atrocities has led to a loss of confidence in the institution.

By withdrawing from the ICC, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger seek to safeguard their sovereignty by creating indigenous mechanisms for consolidating peace and justice. This move reflects the nations' desire to take ownership of their justice systems and develop context-specific solutions to address human rights abuses and other crimes.

Human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have expressed concerns over the withdrawal, citing potential impunity for perpetrators of human rights abuses. These organizations fear that the absence of ICC oversight may embolden perpetrators and undermine efforts to hold them accountable for their actions.

The withdrawal also reflects the growing rift between the Sahel region and Western powers, particularly former colonial ruler France. The three countries have drawn closer to Russia, which has an ICC arrest warrant against President Vladimir Putin. This shift in allegiance may have significant implications for regional dynamics and international relations.

Some of the likely implications of this withdrawal could be that the withdrawal will take effect one year after the official submission of the case to the UN General Secretariat. During this period, the countries will likely work on establishing their indigenous justice mechanisms and strengthening their cooperation with other nations.

For Unity Star Tv Africa, EFF Economic Freedom Fighters and the other African individual and organisations in the liberation struggle for the unity and economic freedom of Africa, this move is seen as a major victory in the Pan-African struggle for freedom of Africa from imperialism and neocolonialism. As the nations assert their sovereignty. Africans are called upon to wake from their slumbers and unite in support of this great struggle. The mantra of "One united Africa, one people, one voice" resonates strongly in this context, highlighting the need for collective action and solidarity in the pursuit of African liberation.

Akpabio vs Natasha Continues As Afenifere Wants Federal Government to Probe Allegations

The dispute between the Senate President, Sen Godwill Akpabio and Sen Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan would have been settled and forgotten but the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the Federal Government to investigate the sexual harassment allegations leveled by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This call follows the Senate's decision to lift Akpoti-Uduaghan's six-month suspension, which Afenifere commended as a reinforcement of the country's rule of law.

Afenifere's National Organising Secretary, Kole Omololu, emphasized that the senator's recall should not overshadow the need to establish the truth of her claims. While commending the Senate President and leadership for upholding the rule of law, Omololu insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations must not be an Afenifere urged the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute the case with due diligence and in the interest of justice.

The group questioned the credibility of Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations, citing a previous case where she was found to have made false sexual harassment allegations against former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri.

Afenifere noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan's claims have been taken to international media platforms, projecting Nigeria negatively on the global stage

Afenifere urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, and National Intelligence Agency, to investigate the claims both locally and internationally to unearth the truth. Amnesty International has also called for an independent investigation into the allegations, stressing the need for accountability and justice for survivors of sexual harassment.

Tensions in Kogi as Okwute Denies Involvement in ADC Secretariat Attack

The recent attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Secretariat in Dekina Local Government Area has ignited controversy in Kogi politics, after claims surfaced linking the incident to the state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Rabietu Okwute.

Videos circulated online last week showed the ADC office vandalised, with reports alleging that the perpetrators wore T-shirts branded with Okwute’s image. The suggestion that she sponsored the attack has, however, been dismissed by her supporters as a smear campaign aimed at discrediting her rising political profile.

The incident has drawn criticism from across the state, with many condemning the attack as a setback for democratic engagement. Political observers note that rivalry in Igalaland, where Dekina is located, is often intense, with local battles for influence frequently overshadowing party politics.

Analysts suggest that Okwute’s increasing visibility in government may have unsettled certain political actors. Before her appointment, she built a career in the civil service and was an active member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Known for her open-door style and emphasis on community service, Okwute has often spoken against violence in politics.

Reacting to the allegations, Okwute described the accusations as a deliberate attempt to tarnish her reputation.

“I am a mother and builder of youths and community, I don’t destroy,” she said.

Supporters argue that it would be illogical for her to sponsor an attack in a way that openly implicated her.

The incident also touches on broader conversations about women’s participation in politics in Kogi State. The state has gained recognition in recent years for appointing women to key positions under the leadership of former Governor Yahaya Bello and his successor, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. Advocates fear that attempts to smear prominent female politicians risk discouraging younger women who aspire to leadership roles.

Civil society voices have urged security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation to establish the facts and punish those responsible, while cautioning against the use of violence or propaganda to settle political disputes.

For many in Kogi, the attack reflects the persistent challenges of intolerance and rivalry in local politics.

Observers say the incident should serve as a reminder that democratic competition requires maturity and respect for opposing voices, rather than smear tactics and destruction.
