A police officer assigned to the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun in Ghana's Greater Accra Region has been caught on camera slapping a GHOne TV journalist, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene. The incident occurred on July 11, 2025, at the Church of Pentecost polling station in North Odorkor.

According to eyewitnesses and video evidence, the officer ordered Banahene to leave the inner perimeter of the voting center despite his displayed press credentials. When Banahene refused to vacate the area, citing his role as a journalist covering the electoral process, the officer slapped him on the face. Banahene recounted, "I was just sitting behind a vendor, and the officer asked me to go out. I told him I can’t just leave because we are all working, and he slapped me on the face. I have not done anything unethical. I have not done anything wrong".

The journalist sustained injuries from the slap, with a scar on his face reportedly caused by his glasses. The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the incident, expressed disappointment over the officer's conduct. GHOne TV has strongly condemned the assault and called for an urgent investigation.

Banahene plans to file a formal complaint with the Accra Regional Police Command, stating that the officer's actions were a clear disregard for press freedom and unprofessional behavior. This phrase has been echoed by many, who see the incident as a threat to media freedom and safety.

New Era in African Travel: Kenya Scraps Visa Requirements

In a significant development, Kenya has announced the removal of visa requirements for all African and most Caribbean countries, effective immediately. This move aims to promote tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Kenya and other African and Caribbean nations.

Travellers from eligible countries can now enter Kenya without applying for a visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This policy change is expected to boost Kenya's economy, particularly the tourism sector, by making it easier for visitors to explore the country's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

However, it's worth noting that Somalia and Libya are exempt from this policy due to security concerns. The Kenyan government has cited the need to ensure national security and protect its citizens as the reason for this exemption.

The new policy is a significant step towards promoting African unity and cooperation, and it's expected to have a positive impact on the region's economy and tourism industry. As Kenya welcomes visitors from across Africa and the Caribbean, the country is poised to become a major hub for international travel and commerce.

This move is seen as a major breakthrough in promoting pan-Africanism and regional integration, and it's expected to inspire other African countries to follow suit.

Faith and Politics Don't Mix: Anglican Church's New Rule

In a significant move, the Anglican Church of Nigeria has announced a ban on politicians from occupying the podium during church services. This decision comes in the wake of controversy surrounding comments made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which sparked widespread debate and criticism.

The Church's leadership has emphasized the need to maintain the sanctity and integrity of the pulpit, ensuring that it is not used for political gain or to promote individual interests. By keeping politicians off the podium, the Church aims to uphold its spiritual mandate and avoid being drawn into partisan politics.

This move is seen as a bold step towards reaffirming the Church's role as a moral compass in Nigerian society. As the country navigates complex political terrain, the Anglican Church's decision serves as a reminder of the importance of separating faith from politics.

The Church's stance is expected to resonate with many Nigerians who are increasingly concerned about the intersection of politics and religion. By drawing a clear line, the Anglican Church of Nigeria is setting a precedent that may influence other religious organizations to reexamine their relationship with politicians.

SENATE REPLACES NATASHA

As at the time Nigerians were expecting the Senate to obey the court order to recall and allow Sen Natasha into the chamber, they did the contrary. The Senate replaced Natasha as Diaspora, NGO Committee Chairperson.

This is not the first time that the Senate will disobey such a court injunction. Senator Isaac Alfa representing Kogi East had a similar order against Sen Atai Aidoko but the Senate under David Mark disobeyed the order and allowed Sen Isaac until the end of his tenure. To to
