📌 CVT Transmission Types You Should Know: From Direct Shift to E-CVT:

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is an automatic transmission that seamlessly changes through an infinite number of gear ratios, offering smoother acceleration and better fuel efficiency. Several types of CVTs are used in modern vehicles, each using different mechanisms. Below are the main types:

1. Pulley-Based CVT (Most Common):

This uses a pair of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a belt or chain. One pulley connects to the engine (drive pulley) and the other to the wheels (driven pulley). By adjusting the width of the pulleys, the belt moves up or down to vary the gear ratio. This type is commonly found in cars and scooters.

2. Direct Shift CVT (DS-CVT or Toyota’s Direct Shift-CVT):

Developed to overcome the slow response of traditional CVTs, Direct Shift CVT includes a physical first gear (launch gear) that handles initial acceleration. After launching, the system switches to belt-driven CVT operation. This results in quicker starts, more direct acceleration, and improved efficiency.

3. Toroidal CVT:

Instead of belts and pulleys, this CVT uses power rollers and rotating discs. The rollers transmit power between two discs by varying their contact angles, allowing for a smooth transition in gear ratios. Toroidal CVTs are more compact and can handle higher torque, making them suitable for performance vehicles, though they're more complex and expensive.

4. Dual CVT (D-CVT):

D-CVT, developed by Daihatsu, adds a gear drive to the conventional pulley system. At lower speeds, it behaves like a normal CVT, but at higher speeds, it uses a gear mechanism for better efficiency and reduced friction losses. It's commonly found in small vehicles in Asia.

5. Electronic CVT (E-CVT):

Unlike mechanical CVTs, e-CVTs are used in hybrid vehicles. They manage power flow electronically between an internal combustion engine, electric motors, and a planetary gear system. The system continuously optimizes power delivery for maximum fuel efficiency and performance.

Federal Government Expresses Willingness to Partner with NSE on Innovation and Youth Development
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, has expressed readiness to partner with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on several strategic fronts, including the establishment of a Joint Working Committee to serve as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for innovation-driven and youth-focused initiatives. This SPV will coordinate collaborative efforts in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, Engineering innovation, and youth capacity development.

This commitment was made known by the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, during a courtesy visit by the NSE President, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, who led a high-powered delegation to his office in Abuja on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The visit was part of NSE’s ongoing stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at advancing Engineering-led national transformation and technological progress.

In her remarks, NSE President presented Society's five-point strategic agenda, which includes: Membership Development and Capacity Building; Strengthening Academia-Industry-Government Linkages; Global Engineering Relations; Institutional Reforms and Governance, and Community Impact and Youth Empowerment.

She further emphasized NSE’s commitment to grassroots STEM education, the revival of JETS Clubs across schools, and the creation of innovation platforms to nurture young Engineering minds and inspire the next generation of problem-solvers.

The engagement also featured technical updates from key government agencies. Engr. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, FNSE, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), shared progress reports on pilot projects in green hydrogen, solar water heating, and wind energy, as well as the planned Barefoot Renewable Energy College in Kogi State.
