“I can change him after we get married.”
That was what I kept telling everyone who warned me about Daniel.
Before we got married, Daniel was a heavy drinker. He loved staying out late, barely called me, and whenever we argued, he could go days without speaking to me.
My mother begged me to reconsider.
“My daughter, marriage doesn’t change people,” she warned me.
But I was convinced I was different.
“He loves me. Once we get married, he will settle down.”
So I married him.
For the first few months, everything seemed perfect. Then slowly, the old Daniel returned.
He started coming home late. Sometimes he wouldn’t come home at all.
When I complained, he would say, “You knew who I was before you married me.”
Those words broke something inside me.
I became pregnant, hoping the baby would make him change.
It didn’t.
Instead, the nights became longer, the arguments became louder, and I became a woman I barely recognized.
One evening, after another terrible argument, I sat alone in our bedroom and cried.
Then I remembered my mother’s words:
“Marriage doesn’t change people. People change when they decide to.”
That night, I finally understood my mistake.
I had married the man I hoped Daniel would become instead of accepting the man he was.
And the painful truth was…
I couldn't love someone into becoming the person I wanted him to be.
💔 Sometimes, we don't fall in love with who someone is. We fall in love with who we believe they can become.
Have you ever seen someone enter marriage believing they could change their partner?
