Senator Umeh Pays Tribute As Former Speaker Agunwa Anaekwe Is Laid To Rest

On Friday, October 17, 2025, Distinguished Senator Victor Umeh OFR, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, joined fellow members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, and a host of sympathizers to honor the late Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, at his burial ceremony.

The solemn proceedings commenced with a Burial Mass officiated by Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, held at St. Peter's Catholic Church. The final rites continued at the Anaekwe family compound in Dimnam Village, Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

In his heartfelt tribute, Senator Umeh—who holds the honorary chieftaincy title "Ugwumba Anaocha"—praised the late Chief Agunwa Anaekwe (Ide Anaocha) for his distinguished legacy as a lawyer, community leader, and devoted father. He highlighted Anaekwe’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly his tenure as Speaker during the 3rd Republic (1992–1993), describing his leadership as visionary and steadfast in the face of military disruption.

Senator Umeh expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the National Assembly, including Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for bestowing a State Burial on the late Speaker. He also acknowledged the commendation sessions held in both legislative chambers as a fitting tribute to Anaekwe’s national service.

Further commendation was extended to the National Burial Committee, chaired by Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West), for their dedication in organizing a dignified farewell. Senator Umeh described Anaekwe as a beacon of pride for Anaocha, Anambra State, the Igbo nation, and Nigeria at large.

Encouraging the Anaekwe family to uphold their patriarch’s enduring legacy, Senator Umeh expressed confidence in their ability to emulate his exemplary life. He concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of the late Speaker’s soul and strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.

The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries including the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu; former Governor of Anambra State, Senator Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, Senator Uche Ekwunife, and other members of the National and State Assemblies, alongside representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Senator Umeh Facilitates Federal Job Opportunities Following Hon. Francis Okoye's Visit

In a testament to the power of political access and bipartisan collaboration, Hon. Okoye Chidozie Francis, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has publicly commended Senator Dr. Victor Chukwunonyelum Umeh of the Labour Party for his swift intervention in securing federal job placements for constituents.

Okoye, who visited Senator Victor Umeh at his National Assembly office on Wednesday, described the meeting as “fruitful” and praised the senator’s responsiveness. According to Okoye, he approached the senator with information about job openings in a federal institution and requested assistance in reaching the relevant authorities. Senator Umeh immediately placed a call to the institution’s contact person, leading to a successful outcome.

“This is what a true representative of the people does for their constituents and friends,” Okoye stated. “Despite our political differences—he is of the Labour Party and I opposed him during the last election—he granted my request without delay.”

The gesture has reportedly brought joy to several job seekers in Okoye’s network, who had been pressing him for federal employment opportunities. He concluded his statement with gratitude to Senator Victor Umeh.

Senator Umeh’s action has drawn praise across party lines, reinforcing his reputation as a responsive and people-focused legislator.

Senator Umeh Condemns Demolition At Lagos Trade Fair Complex, Calls Action “Illegal and Intimidatory”

Senator Victor Umeh has strongly criticized the recent demolition of structures at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos, describing the move as “illegal” and “a deliberate act to intimidate the people.” Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the senator expressed outrage over the actions of the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning, who publicly defended the demolition.

“I am surprised that the Commissioner came on television to justify his illegal actions,” Umeh stated. “The Trade Fair Complex is a federal establishment. Federal lands are under the control of federal government agencies, not Lagos State. There are clear demarcations of jurisdiction between federal and state lands.”

The senator emphasized that the complex is managed by the Trade Fair Management Board, a federal agency, and insisted that Lagos State authorities have no legal claim over the land. He further emphasised that the demolition was carried out without prior notice to the traders, many of whom had received approvals for their structures from the federal board.

“All the structures at the complex were approved by the Trade Fair Management Board,” Umeh said. “This is not just a breach of protocol—it’s a calculated attempt to intimidate law-abiding citizens.”

Power Disruption Hits Kaduna As Transmission Tower Collapses

Residents of parts of Kaduna South are experiencing power outages following the collapse of a transmission tower in Rigasa community. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025, has been attributed to a combination of severe weather and vandalism.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Tower No. 7 along the Kaduna town line I and II gave way during a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds. Upon inspection, TCN engineers discovered that vandals had removed critical structural components from the tower, weakening its integrity and contributing to the collapse.

The disruption has affected bulk power transmission to several Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) load centers, particularly those serving Kaduna South. In response, TCN has advised KAEDCO to reroute supply by linking the 33kV Mogadishu feeder with the 33kV Abakwa feeder, allowing some affected areas to regain access to electricity.

Communities such as Kinkinau, Yan Tukwane, Kabala West, Unguwan Muazu, and Kaduna North remain unaffected and continue to receive normal power supply.

TCN engineers are currently on-site, dismantling the damaged structure and preparing for the er****on of a new tower. The company has assured residents that every effort is being made to minimize the duration of the outage.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers in Southern Kaduna,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN.

Efforts are underway to restore full power supply as swiftly as possible.

Anambra Police Intensify Crackdown On Cultism And Drug Abuse, Arrest 54 Suspects In Statewide Raids

The Anambra State Police Command has ramped up its efforts to combat rising cases of cultism, drug abuse, and other societal vices, arresting 54 suspects in a series of coordinated raids across the state.

According to a press briefing delivered by Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects (comprising 39 males and 15 females) were apprehended in separate operations targeting cult gatherings and drug hideouts. The arrests come amid growing concern over moral decay among youths aged 18 to 26, with the Command citing declining parental supervision as a contributing factor.

The Command highlighted disturbing trends, including recent cases of self-orchestrated kidnappings. In one incident, a young woman conspired with her boyfriend to stage her own abduction, extorting ₦3 million from her parents. Another couple similarly faked a kidnapping, collecting ₦1 million in ransom.

In a separate cult-related attack, suspected cultists opened fire at a burial ceremony in Ezi-Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, killing four and injuring fifteen. The Command condemned the violence, describing it as “unacceptable” and vowed to intensify surveillance and intelligence operations.

On September 12, operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) arrested 25-year-old Chiderah Obochi at Ifitedunu. A search revealed quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian h**p. Obochi confessed to being a drug runner and led officers to a residence in Umudioka Village, where 11 bags of suspected Cannabis Sativa were recovered. The substances will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.

In another operation on September 14, police raided a known cultist gathering spot in Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, arresting 53 suspects. The individuals are currently undergoing screening and profiling, with those found culpable to be charged in court.

Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to restoring sanity and safeguarding lives and property in Anambra State. He emphasized a dual strategy of kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, including community engagement and targeted enforcement.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring Ndi Anambra of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
