NATIONAL COUNCIL OF STATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR AMUPITAN AS INEC CHAIRMAN

The National Council of State has approved the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from the North-Central as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan as the nominee to fill the vacant position, following Professor Mahmood Yakubu's exit. Yakubu served from 2015 till October 2025.

President Tinubu told the council that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi, North-Central state, nominated to occupy the position and is apolitical.

Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity.

In compliance with the constitution, President Tinubu will now send Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening.

Amupitan, 58, from Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA in Kogi State, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Plateau. He is also an alumnus of the university.

He specialises in Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance and Privatisation Law. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2014.

Amupitan was born on April 25, 1967.

After completing primary and secondary education, he attended Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, from 1982 to 1984, and the University of Jos from 1984 to 1987. He was called to the bar in 1988.

He earned an LLM at UNIJOS in 1993 and a PhD in 2007, amid an academic career that began in 1989, following his National Youth Service at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation in Bauchi from 1988 to 1989.

Currently, he serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, a position he holds in conjunction with being the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.

Among the academic positions he has held at UNIJOS are: Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012-2014); Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008-2014); and Head of Public Law (2006-2008).

Outside of academics, Amupitan serves as a board member of Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom, a member of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Governing Council, and a member of the Council of Legal Education (2008-2014), among other roles. He was a board member of Riss Oil Limited, Abuja(1996-2004).

Amupitan is the author of many books on law, such as Corporate Governance: Models and Principles(2008); Documentary Evidence in Nigeria (2008); Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria(2013), Principles of Company Law(2013) and an Introduction to the Law of Trust in Nigeria (2014).

He is married and has four children.

Armed Robbers Involved In The Robbery That Led To The D*ath of Arise News Staff, Somtochukwu Maduagwu Arrested

According to the Police, the suspects are:
1. Shamsudeen Hassan ‘m’ from Malumfashi LGA Katsina state
2. Hassan Isah ‘m’, 22 years from Zaria kaduna State
3. Abubakar Alkamu a.k.a. abba ‘m’, 27 years from Musawa LGA katsina state
4. Sani Sirajo a.k.a. dan borume ‘m’ 20 years from Malumfashi LGA katsina state
5. Mashkur Jamilu a.k.a. abba ‘m’ 28 years from Igabi LGA kaduna state
6. Suleiman Badamasi a.k.a. dan-sule ‘m’ 21 years from Malumfashi LGA katsina state
7. Abdul Salam saleh a.k.a. na-durudu ‘m’ from katsina lga katsina State
8. Zaharadeen Muhammad a.k.a. gwaska ‘m’ 23 years from chikun lga kaduna state
9. Musa adamu a.k.a. musa hassan ‘m’ 30 years from malumfashi lga katsina state

Shortly after the robbery incident, four (4) of the suspects shamsudeen hassan, alkamu, sirajo and one other person were apprehended through the tracking of phones stollen from the apartment during the robbery.

During interrogation, Shamsudeen Hassan confessed that he shot the security guard when he attempted to prevent them from gaining access to the apartment. Sani Sirajo confessed to have tried to hold Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu from falling off the three-storey building but was overwhelmed by her weight. Shamsudeen further confessed that he drove the white honda CR-V jeep out of the apartment after the operation. The four suspects admitted that they each received ₦200,000 from the proceeds of the crime.

Recovered exhibits include:
One (1) fabricated ak-47 rifle
Thirty-six (36) rounds of 9mm live ammunition
One (1) locally made pistol
One (1) pump-action gun
Two (2) live cartridges
Four (4) mobile phones of the victims
Two (2) sharp knives
One (1) cutlass
Nine (9) torchlights used during the operation

In continuation of investigations, yesterday, 08/10/2025, acting on a tip-off and actionable digital intelligence also provided by us, the remaining members of the gang, Musa umar a.k.a. small, Hassan Isah and other accomplices involved in the Gishiri robbery were intercepted while enroute to an already planned armed robbery operation scheduled to hold at maitama in the early hours of this morning.

All suspects have confessed to the crimes, investigation is ongoing.

CP ORUTUGU JOINS IGP ADEOLU EGBETOKUN, PhD, NPM, AT THE PASSING OUT PARADE CEREMONY OF 2022/2023 RECRUIT CONSTABLES IN POLICE TRAINING COLLEGE, OJI RIVER.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc minps PhD, today 7th October, 2025 joined the Inspector-General of Police, represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Abayomi Peter Oladipo PSC in charge of Zone 13 Ukpo Dunukofia, Anambra State, at the Passing Out Parade ceremony of the 2022/2023 recruit constables held at the Police Training College, Oji River, Enugu State.

The colourful event marked the successful completion of basic training for thousands of recruit constables across various training institutions nationwide. The newly graduated officers are now fully equipped with the discipline, knowledge, and operational skills required to serve and protect the citizens under the vision of a reformed and community-oriented Nigeria Police Force.

During the ceremony, the IGP charged the new constables to uphold professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties, while CP Orutugu reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Command to align with the IGP’s strategic policing vision for safer communities and improved public confidence.

The event was attended by very senior police officers, representatives of sister security agencies, government officials, traditional rulers and families of the graduating recruits who gathered to celebrate the milestone achievement.

As Security information reveals how criminals use it to beat security checkpoints, attack, and kidnap innocent residents in the State

The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the general public, especially Ndi Anambra, that the ongoing enforcement of tinted glass permit is not intended to punish road users, but to ensure that the right thing is done in the overall interest of public safety.

ANAMBRA POLICE ARRESTS A PRIME SUSPECT IN THE BEHEADING OF A 69 YEAR OLD WOMAN AT UMULERI IN THE YEAR 2024

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on credible information, on 4th October 2025 stormed Aguleri and arrested the prime suspect, Obadigbo Emmanuel Anumudu, ‘M’, aged 46 years. The suspect had allegedly been on the run since 22nd July 2024 after he gruesomely murdered and beheaded late Mrs. Obianuju Akubi, a 69 year old woman in Umuleri.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and further mentioned members of his gang who participated in the murder and beheading. He also disclosed the whereabouts of the victim’s head, which was taken away after the heinous act.

Meanwhile, intensive efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining gang members to ensure that justice is served.

Further developments will be communicated in due course.

ANAMBRA SECURITY: CP ORUTUGU ORDERS RE-ARREST OF TWO CRIMINAL OFFENDERS, CORRECTS ADMINISTRATIVE ERROR BY POLICE PROSECUTOR AND FILES FRESH CHARGES AT THE HIGH COURT

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD, has directed the immediate re-arrest of one Onyebuchi Nwobodo and Ebube Umezumba an alleged criminal offenders over a case of Armed robbery, following the discovery of an administrative lapse by a Police prosecutor. In a swift response, the Command has filed a new Charge before the High Court sitting in the State to ensure that justice is duly served.

The Command also notes a new testimony by victims who identified the suspect and are active participants in the Case of armed robbery.

In line with his zero-tolerance stance on professional negligence, the CP has ordered disciplinary measures against the officers involved in the error, stressing that such lapses will not be condoned under his watch.

This decisive action underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the rule of law in the discharge of its duties.
