DNA FEDERAL REPRESENTATION SINCE 1999: WHERE IS THE FAIRNESS?
Political commentator and stakeholder, Harrison A. Nwegwu, has raised serious concerns over what he describes as a long-standing imbalance in the representation of the Dunukofia / Njikoka / Anaocha (DNA) Federal Constituency.
According to him, for over two decades, the constituency has operated under a democratic structure that should ordinarily reflect balance, fairness, and brotherhood among the three local government areas. However, available records present a troubling reality.
DNA FEDERAL REPRESENTATION SINCE 1999
• Dunukofia – 0 term
• Njikoka – 4 terms (16 years)
• Anaocha – 3 terms (12 years)
Nwegwu noted that for 28 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, Dunukofia Local Government Area has never produced the federal representative of the constituency — not even for a single term. Within the same period, Njikoka has held the position for 16 years, while Anaocha has enjoyed 12 years of representation.
He therefore posed several questions to stakeholders and citizens across the constituency:
Where is the brotherhood often preached among the three local governments?
Where is the fairness in this arrangement?
Where exactly has justice gone to?
According to him, democracy should never evolve into a system where some communities dominate leadership positions while others remain permanent spectators.
He emphasized that Dunukofia is not a second-class partner in the DNA Federal Constituency, stressing that the people of the area consistently participate in elections, mobilize voters, and contribute to the success of candidates across the constituency.
Despite these contributions, he lamented that Dunukofia has remained completely excluded from representation since 1999, describing the situation as unhealthy for unity and contrary to the spirit of equity and brotherhood.
Nwegwu maintained that the demand of the people of Dunukofia is not domination but simple justice, arguing that a constituency built on three equal partners cannot continue to operate like a two-man arrangement for nearly three decades.
He concluded by stating that the time has come for conscience to speak and for fairness to prevail, urging stakeholders across Anaocha, Njikoka, and Dunukofia to support the long-overdue inclusion of Dunukofia in the leadership of the constituency.
“History will remember those who stood for equity, and those who chose to ignore it,” he added.
