SPUR OF THE MOMENT
Of November 8 , _Competency_And Zoning
By John Mokwugwo
All eyes are on Anambra as the State goes to the poll in less than a fortnight from now. A good number of persons are campaigning to occupy the Light House ( Anambra's Government House) from March 2026 in accordance with the Constitution of our country.
There are certain critical questions we must ask ourselves if we are interested in seeing our State shed off the toga of insecurity, hate, name-calling, hypocrisy and retrogression. Who is the best candidate who we should vote for the good of Anambra and her people? Why should we vote such a person! Should that preferred candidate be the incumbent governor? If yes, why should we toe that line ? If no, why should we jettison the principle of continuity ? Has zoning got any significant role to play in this coming election?
The questions can go on ad _infinitum !
But time is of the essence here. Besides, a lot has already been said and written about November 8.
The brutal truth is that candidate Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party ( YPP) is the best of all of them.
He is brilliant, energetic, young, urbane, objective, and above all humane, among several other positive qualities which he parades .
The tendency is for some people to pose the question: " why not allow the incumbent helmsman to complete eight years on the saddle?"
In fairness to him, he has tried to improve what he met on the ground. But the eight years are not his exclusive birth right. Though the Constitution allows him to remain in office for that length of time if he is lucky, there have been cases of people who did only four years .
But Barrister Sir Paul Chukwuma fits in better, everything considered . The overcharged atmosphere of enmity, indeed animosity which has completely ripped Anambra Royalty and the once respected Clergy of its revered respect must be contemplated here.
But wait a minute! Can anyone fathom a Government which is at the mercy of criminals? The primary purpose of government,Thomas Hobbes would state any day, is the provision of security of lives and property.
Inability to tackle this age-old governance challenge has remained the Achilles heel of the current managers of the State.
With fresh, young and a dynamic mindset, the author of Joy is coming has demonstrated through his deeds and words that he is as swift as he is sensitive and sensible, and a repository of contemporary principles and practice of Democracy.
Where there is no or poor power supply, he donates transformers and accessories and turns dark alleys and communities into property lit spaces ; he moves in tractors to clear previous impassable, treacherous road, offers scholarships to indigent students, etc.
And now the mother of propaganda devices aimed at scuttling his mission- the zoning question.
It is only the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA ) which has a non- formalised, rotational scheme which had in the past been defied by innumerable persons both within and outside the party.
Isn't defeatist and undemocratic to talk about zoning? The truth of the matter is that not only are other Parties not party to zoning, even APGA faithful, including the incumbent governor flouted it.
Fellow Anambrarians, we have said enough, let us now act right . Let us welcome Paul Chukwuma, the man who does not carry any baggage; the one who does not antagonize the Royalty, or the Church of God. Let us embrace the joy which is coming !
