Bauchi First Lady Distributes 1,660 Professional Kits to Midwives to Boost Maternal Health Services:

In a major step to strengthen maternal and child health services in Bauchi State, the First Lady, Hajiya Dr. Aishatu Bala Mohammed, has distributed 1,660 professional kits—comprising Crocs and scrubs—to midwives across the state.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Polio Emergency Operations Centre in Bauchi, was facilitated by the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Board. It forms part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of frontline healthcare providers, especially those involved in maternal and neonatal care.

Speaking at the event, Hajiya Aishatu Bala Mohammed—who is also the founder of the Al-Muhibbah Foundation—described midwives as the "backbone of the healthcare system" and lauded their tireless commitment to saving lives, ensuring safe deliveries, and offering essential counseling on hygiene, child spacing, and healthy living.

She emphasized the importance of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Program, which she supports, noting that it strategically targets improved maternal and child health outcomes across the state.

According to her, the initiative aligns with the Bauchi State Government’s ongoing efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality through investments in health infrastructure, provision of essential medicines, and distribution of MAMA kits in underserved areas.

The First Lady also commended the Ministry of Health, the State Primary Healthcare Development Board, and development partners for their dedication to ending preventable maternal deaths and promoting safe childbirth practices.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam, expressed gratitude to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her generous support.

He noted that the kits serve not only as protective wear but also as morale boosters, enhancing the professionalism of midwives, especially those serving in rural communities where conditions are often difficult.

Dr. Dambam further explained that, since the declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector, the state government—under the leadership of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed—has dismantled several bureaucratic barriers, enabling quicker procurement, deployment, and oversight of healthcare personnel and resources.
