Defection to the Ruling Party: INEC, EFCC, Judiciary, The Next To Officially Decamp?

Eben Enasco Reporting.

Elected politicians in the opposition parties across the country seem to have abandoned governance to focus more on joining the ruling All Progressive Congress Party, APC.

Their main aims are to seek tenure elongation and remain relevant in the scheme of things, thereby, ditching reasons why they were voted to represent their constituents.

Political parties are formed for several reasons, including:
Representation of Interests, Policy Implementation, Power and Governance, Accountability and Oversight, Citizen Engagement, and
Ideological Expression.

These reasons highlight the importance of political parties in democratic systems, allowing for diverse perspectives and representation.

But everyday, it is either a member of the national assembly, state assembly or a governor cross carpeting from a political platform to another without clear factor determining their position order than self interest.

This cross carpeting has frustrated citizens, and their political followers who are yet to understand why most have resolved to quit a party half way into their tenures that availed them the opportunity to sail as politicians.

The recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling party, APC, has become a source of intense debate, with many questioning whether the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, and Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, also tilting towards perfecting their own decamping to the ruling party.

The electoral umpire, Judiciary and anti graft agency, have been used to force a palp through the throat of anyone who refuses to join the geng gangs in power.

The recent defections have further fueled these allegations, with many wondering if INEC's, Judiciary and anti graft agency, actions are contributing to the opposition's woes.

If they are perceived as biased, it could erode trust in the electoral process and undermine the legitimacy of future elections.

Votes in 2027, may not count if these elements continue to perforate the line of justice

A notable politician once said sometimes ago that once you cross over to the ruling APC, your sins are forgiven irrespective of the peoples opinion against such politician.

The fear factor of bias and oppression attributed to the electoral umpire, Judiciary and anti graft agency, is perceived as a key reason for sudden moves of a member of opposition from their parties to the ruling party.

Whereas, the country is facing economic challenges, Insecurity and Infrastructure decay, these elected officers have no plans to proffer solutions with policies needed to make a change, but are only keen on their return to power when their tenures elapsed.

The defections could further weaken the opposition and political future of the generations to come, making it challenging for them to cope with.

Nigerians are facing uncertainty and wondering who will represent them in policy drives as politicians continue to float personal interest against the peoples wish.

The only thing left for electorates is to decamp to the ruling party, that way nobody will worry nobody.

Land Speculation/Grabbing: A Scourge on Communities, Victims.

Eben Enasco Reporting.

In Edo State, the practice of land speculation and grabbing has become a significant challenge in many communities, leaving victims in its wake.

This phenomenon involves individuals or groups acquiring land through questionable means, often using deceit, coercion, or manipulation.

Edo south is predominantly a habitation for land manipulations where chief priests, or Ohen, and other traditional rulers carried negative subjections against citizens.

It is no longer news that many victims of land grabbing have lost their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security.

They often struggle to regain their property, facing legal battles and intimidation.

The experience can be traumatic, causing emotional distress, anxiety and even death for those affected.

Individuals like Ohen of OKhoromi, Kelvin Obvokhan Igbinovia who is supposed to be a shrine priest and pray for sanity of his community, only engage in land speculation and grabbing, using his negative influence, wealth, or connections to exploit vulnerable communities.

For over a decade, there has been one conflict between another, in Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba Okha, Ovia Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon, where individuals or groups have lost millions after buying land genuinely in these Communities affiliated to the councils.

Given this act, it has affected tens of settlers who may not have had the opportunity to cry to the public and the authorities to intervene.

Buyers in a sane society, should be people who have come to invest in property and help develop most communities in Edo South.

But with regular denial of their hard earned investment on landed property, it is difficult to move forward.

The Ohen of Okhoromi is not in isolation in these expansionist operations, but most prominent Enigie and Chiefs who have knowingly deviated from the norms and values of the Edo Society.

Disturbing as it has become, some of these Ohens, Chiefs and Enigie, have assumed to be too powerful in their positions, and sometimes challenge the authority of the Oba of Benin, the custodian of the culture and beliefs.

The lack of effective regulation and accountability enables these culprits to operate with impunity, perpetuating the cycle of exploitation.

However, the cries of those victimized and chased out of their property, are appealing to the traditional institutions and the Benin Monarch to revisit how the Ohen of Okhoromi and others became and still serve on behalf of the custodian of the Benin Kingdom, considering the level of reported atrocities they have committed.

The ohen of Okhoromi's action and others in the same category have brought shame to the revered Benin Culture and heritage where people now equate the race to land grabbers.

The government of Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State in collaboration with the traditional institutions, Security experts, must cut to size these criminal tendencies by curbing the intention of selling a portion of land twice to three different buyers, that have become the substance of crisis.

The likes of the Chief Priest of Okhorimi Community, Iyekogba in Oredo ward two, Kelvin Ovbokhan Igbinovia and others in the same pedestal must be told to relocate or behave through stiff sanctions by the authorities.

Let's not forget that, Land grabbing can lead to social and community instability, as tensions rise between victims and perpetrators.

The practice can also have economic implications, deterring investment and hindering development in affected areas.

The issue of land speculation and grabbing requires urgent attention from authorities and stakeholders, just as victims deserve justice, and perpetrators must be held accountable.

By addressing this scourge, we can promote community stability, protect property rights, and foster economic growth.

UBTH Mortuary Scandal: Corruption Rocks Hospital As processing, "storage" fees, diverted.

Eben Enasco Reporting.

A shocking scandal has rocked the University of Benin Teaching Hospital UBTH, under the leadership of Professor
Darlington Ewaen Obaseki, with allegations of N40,000 racketeering involving mortuary staff for processing" and "storage" fees of co**se.

The official fees for processing" and "storage" are between N60, 000 and N70,000 payable through the accounting department where a receipt of payment is issued to the bearer of the deceased.

Although most racketeering monies paid were said to ease the stress undertaken by the deceased family while seeking to get their co**se released, it is to the detriment of the revenue generated by the University Teaching Hospital.

But the morticians cleverly ask visiting families to withdraw and pay in cash the sum of N40,000, less than the official fee to avoid any trace to their private accounts.

It was learned that these seasoned racketeering cartels are cut across the mortuary managers to the security guards whose duty is to demand receipt of payment for each co**se released before allowing it to be journeyed home.

During the periods, the security guards who are collaborators are made to look away without demanding for the receipt of payment while the co**se is wheeled away.

Our correspondent further gathered that, for the few hours he spent observing the process, more than 10 concerned families came to seek for the release of their dead relatives for a final transition to the cemetery.

Given the numbers of families that appears with such an influx of mutuary patronage, it is estimated that N400,000 is dubiously raked to line the pockets of mutuary staffers, thereby, sub changing internally generated revenues of the hospital community in less than two hours.

The scandal, involves mortuary staff who allegedly extorted money from families of deceased patients, claiming it was for "processing" and "storage" fees.

These trends of corrupt practices are also extended to the same staffers having more than one ambulance procured through the proceeds from the alleged N40,000
where they collect N20,000 per trip to convey the deceased away from the mortuary.

The scandal has raised serious concerns about corruption and mismanagement of hospital funds.

Investigations reveal a large-scale racketeering operation, with staff pocketing hundreds of thousands of naira meant for hospital revenue.

The scandal has resulted in significant losses to the hospital's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), depriving the hospital of much-needed funds for patient care and development.

When our correspondent probed further, a bystander who was waiting for the release of their deceased co**se tongue lashed the system, saying, "it has become a standard practice at UBTH and many government owned hospitals"

The allegations suggest a culture of mismanagement and corruption within the hospital's mortuary department.

There are calls for a thorough investigation into the scandal and for those responsible to be held accountable.

The scandal highlights the need for reforms and greater transparency in hospital management to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The UBTH mortuary scandal is a disturbing revelation of corruption and mismanagement under Professor Darlington Obaseki's leadership.

The hospital's management must take immediate action to address the issue, ensure accountability, and implement reforms to prevent similar scandals in the future.

Tackling Criminality In Edo: Why Government Must Beam More Searchlight on Traditional Rulers Activities.

Eben Enasco Reporting.

Governments at all levels in Edo State have been grappling with the challenge of tackling criminality, with various initiatives aimed at reducing crime and promoting public safety.

However, one often overlooked aspect is the potential role of traditional rulers in maintaining law and order.

Traditional rulers have significant influence over their communities, making them important stakeholders in efforts to tackle crime.

As custodians of culture and tradition, traditional rulers are deemed culpable of playing a key role in promoting values and practices that support law and order.

Given the aforementioned, traditional rulers are also expected to engage more with their communities to raise awareness about the dangers of crime and promote peaceful coexistence, particularly working with security agencies to gather intelligence and identify potential hotspots for crime.

But these roles seem to elude their immediate thoughts where they have become engrossed in circular politics, and sell offs, leaving their primary responsibilities to their poor subjects to grapple with.

The recent surge in criminal activities in Edo State is a case of one in many questions about the role of traditional rulers in maintaining law and order.

Kidnappings, herder-farmer clashes, land speculations and open grazing in farms, in Edo State, have all been traced to the actions undertaken secretly by most traditional rulers in the state.

Edo State is facing these multitude of challenges that are threatening the safety and livelihoods of its citizens, because a certain traditional ruler has compromised to personal gains rather than securing the safety of its subjects

Several fingers in the past have been pointed towards the traditional rulers over their roles in accommodating these evil transiting herders in the state, where they have become some of the pressing issues that need to be addressed.

The influx of foreign elements in communities are subject to the alleged secret agreements reached between these traditional rulers and the suspected herders

There have been instances, where police have arrested some of these suspected herders, and in their confessions, traditional rulers are indicted of collecting millions of Naira to allow the marauders to have an inroads to farms belonging to their subjects and graze.

Land speculations resulting in internal rages in communities are as a result in most times of bad resolutions influenced by monetization that tends to favour the highest bidders.

The rightfully owners of property are swept aside in most cases if they cannot offer money bags to buy judgements.

Land speculation and grabbing have become significant issues in Edo State, with many individuals and groups acquiring land for speculative purposes.

These stark situations have become increasingly common, with many innocent citizens falling prey to the crimes.

The prevalence of kidnappings, Kand speculations, open grazing have created a sense of fear and insecurity among residents, affecting their daily lives and economic activities with most traditional rulers who are supposed to collaborate to flush out the crimes are permanently silent.

These Conflicts between herders and farmers have resulted in violence, displacement, and loss of life and property.

Now the question is, what do these greedy traditional rulers bring to the table for the benefits of their subjects?

In most opinions sampled in the course of this piece, it was gathered that the traditional rulers only embarked in collecting all incentives and opportunities meant to salvage their subjects into their private pockets as the only people to probably benefit are their immediate family.

The bane of corrupt practices in Nigeria emanated from the grassroots, where cultural beliefs have been ditched for financial aggrandizement.

However, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, ordering the immediate suspension of Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, Estako East Local Government Area is the right decision.

According to a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the traditional ruler was suspended indefinitely over recent cases of incessant kidnapping and killings in his domain.

In the statement, the secretary of the traditional ruler, Chief Peter Omiogbemhi, has since been arrested by the relevant authorities, following a recent incident that led to the death of a Palace Chief, Late John Ikhamate.

The position of the state government should not only end with the suspension, but a further inquest to his activities to ascertain his level of involvement in the spilling kidnappings across the state.

When found liable to the accusations leveled against him, he should serve as deterrent to curb these sellouts by criminally minded traditional rulers.

The governor in this regard, should be encouraged and given all necessary support to further probe the activities of traditional rulers in the state because as custodians of culture and tradition, traditional rulers have a significant influence on things happening around their domains and can play a crucial role in preventing and combating crime

The government should indeed beam more searchlight on traditional rulers and explore ways to also support and empower them in this effort.

By working with government agencies, traditional rulers can leverage resources and expertise to support their efforts to tackle crime.

Criminal Invasion In Edo : The Police, Stealing Foreigners, The Game Of Orders

Eben Enasco Reporting.

The Nigeria Police Force was primarily established during the colonial era to maintain order and suppress dissent against British rule.

It was later used to maintain internal security and support other government agencies.

While the initial purpose was order maintenance, the police force has been criticized for its historical involvement in political events and its role in suppressing dissent.

These actions from the Nigeria Police Force since independence, has led to criticism of its performance and the need for reform.

The police's ineffectiveness in combating crime lately in Edo State and other parts of the country, is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach.

A few things have hindered the clinical policing in the states, including; The Police itself, Government Disparity, Stealing Foreigners, and The Game Of Orders from superiors with interests.

The recent development is a testament to the APC government's commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force, NPF.

Police officers struggle to meet their family responsibilities due to insufficient salaries and allowances.

While their counterparts security architecture set up like the Nigeria army are pampered, allocated oil wells, and equipped far better, despite the hard work put in by the police, gets no recognition for such.

The government's prioritization of military welfare over police welfare raises questions about their commitment to citizen safety and security.

Another issue is the proposed bill to exempt military personnel from paying tax which highlights the disparity in treatment between the military and police.

The Police officers, who pay tax from their salaries, deserve consideration for tax exemption, just like the military and other security agencies.

The tools and equipment necessary for effective policing are often inadequate, hindering their ability to perform their duties.

However, more needs to be done to address the welfare and operational challenges faced by men and women in police uniform.

Addressing the root causes of crime, improving police capacity and training, building trust with the community and allowing the same police act according to the ethical mandate are essential steps towards creating a safer environment.

But then, the recent surge in criminal activities in Edo State and other parts of the country, has further raised concerns about the effectiveness of the police in combating crime irrespective of the above mentioned essentials to revive the policing system.

With some unknown foreigners now marauding the forests and streets, it has become very difficult to curtail their operations.

Many of the foreigners, including the transiting hunters most often pretend to be scavengers or into a strange hunting business down the southern region who move about homes in the metropolis in search of broken metals for economic values.

In the southern forests, these pretending criminals have sojourned with hidden agendas.

On the streets, they are either engaged in low income labourer's jobs like scavenging broken metals, building support service, and home maintainable services where they have now become aware of the life and behaviour of the southern people of Nigeria.

Recent reports have emerged in part of communities in Edo North on the atrocities of suspected Fulani herders

The communities of Agbede, Odigie, Egono, and surrounding areas were gripped by fear as Fulani herders, allegedly backed by corrupt police officers, wreaked havoc on innocent civilians.

According to various reports, farm destruction, killings, rapes, and kidnappings for ransom have become disturbingly common.

The police have been accused that, instead of protecting the communities, they seem to be aiding and abetting the Fulani herders against the aborigines.

The DPO at Agbede Police Station, the Police Area Commander in Auchi, and the AIG of Zone Five Office in Benin are accused of backing the herders with lining orders which is now creating fear amongst the people over their genuine protection and safety.

A member of the community who did not want his name on the print disclosed to our correspondent that the police are using blackmail, harassment, and detention to intimidate vigilantes and hunters who dare to challenge the Fulani invaders.

The source alleged that they are forced to sign undertakings not to confront the herders, effectively stripping the communities of their right to self-defense.

The people of Agbede, Odigie, Egono, and neighboring communities, according to the source, are living in palpable fear, unable to farm, travel, or go about their daily lives without fear of attack.

The destruction of farms and livestock has led to significant economic losses, pushing many families to the brink of poverty.

Although, the police command has made frantic efforts in its operations to debunk these allegations through several recorded arrests of criminal kidnappers.

In a recent statement released and made available to the press by CSP Moses Joel Yamu, Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command disclosed that it rescued another two kidnapped victims on 18/04/2025 at about 2115hrs demonstrating its commitment to tackle criminality in the State.

This it stated that the successes recorded precluded a case which was reported on 14/04/2025 at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Iyamho, where a woman and her sister were kidnapped after shooting and fatally wounding the woman's husband at Oluoke community.

Yamu revealed that the injured man was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical Doctor on duty.

In a swift response, the DPO, Anti Kidnapping team stationed at Edo North, and Operation Rescue in company of Vigilantes/Hunters mobilised and went after the kidnappers in order to rescue the victims and arrest the kidnappers.

The resilience and determination of the operatives led to the rescue of the two women, namely, Esther Friday 32 years and Joy Iregbeyen 23 years whom the kidnappers abandoned and ran away because of the mounting pressure by the security teams.

He emphasized that the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika is working obviously on strategies that would curb further crime and deter criminals.

However, these communities are urging the press to shed light on this crisis and expose the police officers involved in aiding and abetting the Fulani herders.

Maximum pressure is needed between the police, press and the society to bring an end to this complicity done on the victimized communities.

They are demanding from the commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika to urge the police officers to withdraw their support for the Fulani herders and allow the communities to defend themselves.

The Police must understand that, the situation in Agbede, Odigie, Egono, and surrounding areas is a humanitarian crisis that requires immediate attention which they sworn to give equal protection services like the suspected herders.

Corruption within the police force can undermine efforts to combat crime, as some officers might be complicit in criminal activities or accept bribes to turn a blind eye.

When the public loses trust in the police due to corruption or ineffectiveness, it can lead to reduced cooperation and increased crime.

The Game Of Orders from above must be sacrificed for building trust and engaging with the community which can help the police gather intelligence and prevent crimes.

Genuine collaboration between the police and all stakeholders, such as community leaders, local security services and civil society organizations, is crucial in addressing the root causes of crime.

Abating Kidnappings: Extending Death Penalty By Hanging To Corrupt Politicians

Eben Enasco Reporting.

The surge in kidnappings in Nigeria has led to calls for stricter penalties across the Country, including the death penalty, for those involved in such crimes.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo joined the league of Nigerians voicing their beliefs for stricter measures when he declared at a Town Hall
stakeholders’ session at the Uromi, in an interactive session with leaders and members of the Arewa community in Esan land on Friday his intentions to sign the dotted lines should the court find anyone guilty.

Governor Okpebholo, expression connotes his administrations' readiness to curb heinous crime like kidnapping for a ransome now the trend in the state.

When considering the involvement of corrupt politicians in office, the issue becomes even more complex to debate.

Corrupt politicians are the true kidnappers who have continued to provide nothing for the common good of all but steal much from resource centers

In most opinions sampled, it is perceived that the politicians should face similar severe consequences like kidnappers, as they are even more liable to face death by hanging for engaging in stealing of public funds thereby, impoverishing their citizens.

Corrupt politicians who engage in the abuse of power and betray public trust, warrant severe consequences, like a common kidnapper who facilitates kidnappings within his neighbourhood and beyond.

Loud the decision of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State would vow to sign the death penalty against anyone pronounced to be guilty by the court of law to have committed the crime, lawmakers must also commit to the idea of rewarding corrupt officials in Government to death penalties.

Corruption is a multifaceted issue, and addressing it requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond punitive measures.

Proponents argue that extending the death penalty to such politicians would serve as a deterrent and ensure justice for all, victims, families and Nigerians who have been denied good governance as a result of the actions of corrupt politicians.

Ensuring that any penalty, including the death penalties, are applied fairly and in accordance with the rule of law is crucial and may likely end all aspirations to occupy public offices and immediately design mechanisms to siphon common patrimonies.

Extending the death penalty to erring kidnappers and politicians involved in such crimes is a contentious issue.

Holding corrupt politicians accountable can help restore public trust in government and institutions where severe penalties might deter other politicians from engaging in similar activities.

Besides, Strengthening institutions and promoting transparency and accountability in governance might be more effective in preventing corruption.

Implementing reforms and providing opportunities for rehabilitation could help address the root causes of corruption.

The issue of extending the death penalty to corrupt politicians involved in kidnappings raises important questions about accountability, justice, and the rule of law.

A balanced approach that considers the complexities of corruption and promotes fairness and transparency is essential to address the issues head on.
