HOW TO CHARGE HIGH AS A BEGINNER
If you are a graphic designer,or you have any digital skill, don't make the mistake of skipping this!
If you follow everything written below 👇, you will start charging higher than you can ever imagine within months...
A lot of beginners struggle with charging high because they are scared that if they mention a serious amount, the client will run away. They feel the money is too big. They feel nobody will pay. They feel only people doing magic can charge twenty thousand naira for a flyer. Some even think those designers are lying or showing off. Meanwhile, even the two thousand naira they are charging, some people are still pricing it. Some will even tell them to do two designs for three thousand naira. So this whole thing is to open your eyes and teach you exactly how to break that barrier and finally charge high without fear.
Let us go step by step.
FIRST STAGE: INVEST IN YOURSELF
If you want people to invest in you, you must invest in yourself first. That is the plain truth. A lot of beginners find it hard to invest in themselves. They cannot buy tools. They cannot buy premium resources. They cannot buy a structured course. And it is not because they cannot find one, it is because they feel it is too expensive for them.
Buying a course is not only about learning how to design. It gives you access to the creator, access to the person’s thought process, the mindset they use to solve problems, the way they reason while designing, the way they troubleshoot, and the community around them. Communities alone can change your destiny. Many professionals gather there, share knowledge, correct one another, and drop resources. The small money you pay will bring value that is far beyond what you expected.
If you cannot comfortably invest five thousand or ten thousand naira in yourself, how do you expect a stranger to comfortably invest that amount in you. If you love free things too much, you will keep charging low. If you are a free business card, you cannot be a premium designer.
The moment you push yourself to pay for something that stretches you, something changes inside. Your courage increases. Your timidity drops. Something like audacity will enter you. And that audacity is what makes you comfortably charge high without shaking.
SECOND STAGE: IMPROVE YOURSELF
Some of you even buy courses, but you refuse to go through them because you are lazy. Some cannot sit down and read long text. Some just want to scroll through designs. That thing is stopping your growth.
To improve yourself, you must watch tutorials. You must read. You must follow people. And above all, you must practice consistently. Practice is where the real change happens. Watching without practicing will keep you on the same spot.
Practice every day or create a structured pattern you do not break. If you spend one hour watching tutorials, spend three hours practicing what you watched. When you practice consistently, your value increases naturally. And when your value rises, your confidence will rise. That is when you can boldly charge high.
If your work is not yet good, forget charging high for now. Go back and improve. It is not about wanting the money. It is about being someone who has value worth paying for. Once your work becomes undeniable, you have solved half of the problem already.
THIRD STAGE: JUST DO IT
Sometimes you need to stop overthinking it and just charge. The first time I charged high, I had never charged two thousand before. One thousand and one thousand five hundred naira was even a lot for me. But one day I saw a senior colleague’s catalog. The amount he was charging shocked me. And immediately, something told me to try it.
A lady from YouTube asked for my price. I said five thousand naira. Remember, I was charging one thousand. She quietly asked for my account number and paid in full. That single moment changed my mindset.
Sometimes you are scared. Sometimes you want to pity the client. Stop negotiating on their behalf. Say your price and keep quiet. Let them respond. Even two thousand is too big for some people. So say your price boldly and wait.
Stop telling them the price and immediately adding discount. That one weakens your authority. Say it once and relax.
FOLLOW PROFESSIONALS AND LEARN FROM THEM
Some of you will see designers posting their prices and wins online. Instead of learning from them, you start dragging them. You say they are forming. You say they are oppressing. You say the price is unrealistic. Meanwhile, the people they charge are not complaining.
If you see someone charging twenty thousand or fifty thousand for a flyer, study the person. Follow them. Check their portfolio. Check how they present themselves. Even if you never talk to them one on one, you can learn a lot by observing.
Surround yourself with people that lift your confidence, not people that keep you inside that two thousand naira zone forever.
JOIN COMMUNITIES
Do not isolate yourself. It will slow you down. Join graphic design groups on Facebook. Join WhatsApp communities. Enter spaces where people are sharing resources, posting their wins, discussing strategy, and exposing you to bigger possibilities.
If you hide yourself because you are shy or proud, you will struggle. Open yourself up to the industry.
POSITION YOURSELF AS AN AUTHORITY
To position yourself as an authority, you must know more than design. Learn copywriting. Learn marketing. Learn basic strategy. Learn how to research a client’s industry.
When a client drops a brief and you speak with clarity and confidence, it changes everything. Correct their copies politely. Suggest better angles. Mention basic principles you know. Show them you understand their audience. Show them you are a professional.
When you talk like someone who knows what he is doing, the client will expect you to charge high before you even charge. Respect comes naturally.
Just do not overdo it. Do not sound robotic. Be human. Be confident. Be clear.
ADDITIONAL POINTS TO DEEPEN YOUR MESSAGE
Here are more points added in your exact tone and flow to complete your content.
BUILD A SOLID PORTFOLIO
Your portfolio is your face in the market. If your work looks scattered, you will find it hard to charge high. Arrange your best works. Not many, just the best. Present them in a clean place. It can be your WhatsApp catalog, Instagram page, or portfolio site. The quality of your presentation alone can make people respect your price.
STOP TAKING EVERY CLIENT
Some clients are not for you. Some will drain you. Some will not value you. Learn to walk away from clients that want to frustrate you. When you start rejecting low paying clients, your mindset changes automatically. You will start attracting people who see your value.
LEARN HOW TO TALK TO CLIENTS
How you speak determines how people price you. If you talk like you lack confidence, they will drag your price down. Speak calmly. Speak clearly. Speak with knowledge. Speak like someone who understands what he is offering.
Also, leverage on your advantages... If you're fluent and have a nice voice, always close your prospects through calls...
UNDERSTAND HALO EFFECT
This means once people perceive you as premium in one area, they assume your whole brand is premium. Your profile picture, your posts, your display of knowledge, your brand voice, your portfolio, everything matters. The moment you carry yourself like a low brand, your price automatically becomes low.
