I have remained quiet for a while now, but the ongoing conversations and drama on social media concerning Edo South have made it necessary to speak with sincerity and responsibility.
From COMR. OSIFO IYAYI PATRICK.
One question being repeatedly asked by some members of the political class is: “What has Senator NEDA done for Edo South?” Honestly, it is disappointing to hear such a question coming from leaders and political actors who have direct access to information and the ability to verify facts. If such statements were coming from ordinary citizens without access to the realities of governance, it would be easier to understand, but for informed individuals to deliberately ignore the facts for political convenience is unfortunate.
For the record, Senator Neda Imasuen currently chairs the Senate Committee on Public Petitions, a very strategic and sensitive position within the National Assembly. Those who understand the workings of the Senate know the important role such a committee can play, especially during moments of political tension and national uncertainty.
During the Natasha case, tensions within the Senate were already creating political divisions, and there were strong interests from some northern political leaders pushing an agenda that many believed could destabilize the presidency and create grounds for an impeachment process against the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. At that critical moment, Senator NEDA chose to stand on the side of stability, national interest, and democratic order rather than personal or political gain.
Those familiar with Senate procedures understand that issues of that nature, if escalated through the proper committee channels, could have created serious constitutional and political complications for the Senate leadership and ultimately the presidency itself. However, Senator NEDA acted with maturity and responsibility, refusing to allow political tension to degenerate into a national crisis. His calm approach and commitment to stability played a key role in ensuring that the situation did not spiral further.
As a proud Benin man who understands loyalty, truth, and responsibility, he stood firmly for peace, party unity, and the stability of the government at a very delicate time. That is why many within the presidency and the party leadership acknowledged his role and commitment when he later decamped.
It is also important to state clearly that constituency project funds for 2025 and 2026 have not yet been released, and this is a matter that can be independently verified. Therefore, attempts to create misleading narratives around road projects or constituency interventions should be approached with honesty and proper fact-checking.
At the end of the day, politics should not blind us to truth. Constructive criticism is welcome in any democracy, but facts must always remain sacred. Senator NEDA has played his role in strengthening party stability, supporting governance, and protecting the collective interest of both Edo State and the nation.
