Part 10
This morning, I got to the hospital where Jeremy was admitted and just as I was about to enter the hospital gates, one of the security guards who recognized me intercepted me.

He said to me.

"Oga, I heard the full gist of what happened yesterday. You do well. I don't even know why they arrested you join."

He looked so happy as he spoke. I just smiled and thanked him then walked into the hospital.

I got to Jeremy's bed and found his mother sitting beside the bed. Her head was down. She was muttering words which I could here in silent whispers. I could tell she was praying so I just stood behind her with my eyes closed as well. I heard her prayers. She prayed for her son to be well again. She kept casting and binding the spirit of death. I heard her pray so passionately. At some point, she began to cry as she pleaded.

"God Jeremy is my only son. Please. Na. Please. Keep him alive, please. Just hear me and end my suffering lord. Answer my prayers let me rest Father."

I said Amen and she turned in shock. She cleaned her eyes and sniffed her nose.

She greeted me.

"You are out. When were you released from the station?"

"Last night. I tried your number and it was switched off."

"My phone fell. The screen cracked last night."

"How?"

"During the struggle. I didn't know until later in the night."

"How is Jeremy?"

She began to cry again.

I became scared.

"What is wrong?"

"He had a seizure again. Jeremy had a seizure after the fight and collapsed. The doctors were able to revive him and he has been sleeping ever since. They fear his heart is getting weaker. This time Jeremy's sickness is serious. His sickness just comes from nowhere. I don't even know where to expect it from."

She began to cry again.

I held Jeremy's hands.

"Is there anything they asked us to do? What is the way forward?"

"We are just here. There is no information yet. Today is Sunday. For now, the nurses are the only ones available. Doctors are not on ground yet. They will be coming on Monday to check on him."

"But he was fine now. He opened his eyes and slept. He was fine."

"Until he witnessed what his father caused. His father was the one who put him in this stage. Jeremy was suffocating and gasping for air while his father was here slipping me like he was slapping a child. Jeremy saw everything and it affected his already weak heart. I have been praying since morning. I have been praying for him to be fine. I can't come this far alone and lose my son."

"Nothing will happen to him. Believe me. He will be fine. We just have to wait for the doctors to come tomorrow. They will check him. They will tell us what to do. Let's wait. Let's have faith and keep praying for him."

I sat beside him and held his hands.

And with my eyes closed I muttered.

"God, please. Help him."

I have been there and I have not left his sight nor the sight of his mother whose eyes have been opened since last night.

Just this evening, she fell asleep and I am here watching over both of them.

I won't be going home tonight. I will be here helping her out until help comes tomorrow.

I am doing this for the one who sees me as his father and calls me daddy.

Jeremy.

Part 9
I called Jeremy's mother the moment I finished writing and posting the previous episode but her line was switched off. I wasn't at rest. I kept calling and trying. It was already late. The road to the hospital was 2 hours drive from where I live. I couldn't start going to the hospital at that time. Added to that I was exhausted mentally and physically.

I had my bath and decided to call back later on. Thank God I was able to get her number, right before I left the hospital. A security guard helped me get the number from her before me and Jeremy's father were both taken to the police station.

At the time I left, she was still with Jeremy whom I knew saw the whole fight and drama in the hospital.

Jeremy must have been asking who the other man was without even knowing that it was his father. He had definitely seen when his father stood up and slapped his own mother. But he was weak and all he could do at that moment was stare while still breathing from an oxygen tank.

I spent hours in the shower just letting the water pour down on me while I reminisced about the whole event that had happened that day.

I realized as well that it was the first time I was getting into a physical fight with someone in almost 18 years of my life. And surprisingly my first fight landed me in a police station.

I chuckled.

Life.

I am never lucky in things like this. I have watched people fight and go home. Some fight, get separated, and walk away. I landed a punch on someone's face, pushed him to the ground, and got arrested.

My first time.

But I felt good I stood up for someone. It was also the first time I was fighting not for myself, but for someone else. A woman. A woman who was physically assaulted in my presence by another man. I didn't know I had such courage and fight in me to do such.

While the water poured on me, I noticed I had a cut on my back. It had come from being pushed to the wall. I also had fingernail cuts on my hand and neck. It came from being held by the security official and those who came to separate the fight.

Then I realized I had a bad temper as well. Thinking of how I shouted at the top of my voice. Maybe it was because a man punched a woman in front of his own son. I can't even tell. But it was a side of me I had never seen before.

I stepped out of the shower and walked to the bedroom. I picked up my phone and dialed her number again. The line was still switched off.

I claimed my bed and lay quietly until I dozed off. I couldn't write any updates.

My night was restless and felt long.

But thank God I am awake.

This morning, I am fully dressed and heading to the hospital with some provisions I got from the neighbor's shop close to my house.

I am heading to see Jeremy and his mum.

I hope they are both fine. Especially Jeremy who witnessed what he shouldn't have witnessed on his own hospital bed.

Part 8

Yesterday, Jeremy's mother told me how she gave birth to Jeremy and how she eventually discovered that he had sickle cell.

She said she never knew the father was AS just like her. She told me he was her third boyfriend and what they had together happened just once.

"He led me to the bed and forced himself on me that fateful evening. It was on Valentine's Day. He said I was proving stubborn and was refusing to let him sleep with me on a day that was supposed to be dedicated to lovers. That one night was what got me pregnant and eventually I gave birth to Jeremy. He left me when he discovered Jeremy was SS. He said we didn't have a future together because we had chances of giving birth to more sickle cell babies if we continued to be together."

As she spoke she wiped tears from her eyes.

We spoke about her challenges as a single mother and how men tried to use Jeremy to get to her. That was why she was protective of Jeremy when she noticed he was always talking about me.

She told me that last relationship she had used the same format and got her to love him.

"He would always drive down to pick Jeremy. He lavished him with gifts and won my heart through that format. After five months of dating, I discovered he had a wife who was schooling at UNN. Since then I made a promise never to let anyone use my weakness to get me. Jeremy is my weakness. I want his happiness, and because I do, I will love whatever and whoever he loves."

I was silent.

That day we spoke and I just sat beside Jeremy watching him closely.

That evening I told her I was going but would return the following morning to see her.

This morning I bought fruits and a big flask which I took along with me so hot water could be stored for Jeremy.

While I was at the hospital, Jeremy's father arrived. He was a tall lanky lanky-looking man. He came along with a woman whom I suspected was his mother - Jeremy's grandmother.

The moment Jeremy's mother saw him, she stood up from her chair and with voracious anger, she asked him to leave the hospital.

"Go away you bastarrrd. What do you want from me? O you finally care about your son? For 10 years you never called to check on him. Why coming now? O because I told you he was not going to be alive? So you came to show your last respect."

I tried to calm her down. But she wouldn't stop.

"Leave. Get out. Fool!!ll"

The shout woke Jeremy and he opened his eyes

The man who was refusing to go went to sit on the chair close to Jeremy's bed. She walked to him and dragged him up. He stood up and in the blink of an eye, he wired her a resounding slap that echoed in the quiet hospital. Jeremy's mother fell to the floor.

I was angry.

And without thinking twice about the repercussions of my actions, I landed a punch on his face. A fight erupted.

It was at that moment, the hospital security, along with the nurses dashed in and bundled both of us out.

I don't know how Jeremy felt seeing that sight.

Many of you may not know that this very morning, when I left for the hospital Jeremy's father and I were both taken to the police station. I was allowed to go home just an hour ago and the young man was released as well.

I don't know if it is dangerous for me now. But there are two people who should be protected at this moment.

Those people are Jeremy and his mother.

After typing this, I would be communicating with Jeremy's mother to know the situation at the hospital as well.

And I will return there tomorrow to see them.

I am exhausted.

Part 7

Jeremy's mother ran to call one of the nurses to check on her son. She told them he had regained consciousness and his eyes were open. She returned shortly after with the nurse who checked his pulse and heartbeat. I was just watching.

The nurse told her to allow Jeremy to rest a while first and then she will return to check him again.

I noticed Jeremy's mother wasn't hostile towards me anymore. She just sat beside Jeremy and held his legs.

While lying down Jeremy muttered weakly.

"Daddy, I want to walk."

"Walk to where?"

"I want to walk with you."

"You will. You just need strength first. I am here with you."

He smiled and closed his eyes slowly. I watched. Fear gripped me. Because the way he gently shut his eyes felt like he had died. But then he was sleeping.

"I am sorry for everything. I am deeply sorry about Jeremy and..."

"There is no need to be sorry. What has happened has happened."

I kept quiet.

Then she looked up and asked.

"What do you want? Are you trying to use Jeremy to get to me? Because that is what you men do. You see a single mother and the next thing you become nice to the child so you can get to the mother. I prefer you come through me, not through my son. Let me know and see you for who you are, not using my weakness to get to me. And that is why I was against your relationship with Jeremy. Men will show you fake love, and when they've gotten what they want, they'll walk away like they never knew you."

'No... No... I have never thought of that. Never. Not for once have you crossed my mind. I don't even know you that much. It is Jeremy I know. He has been the one I have been close to because I give him a lift to school daily and we talk while we drive. I grew this bond for your son. It came naturally. All of a sudden I stopped seeing him close to me and I became concerned. I did not come with any deceitful intention."

She lowered her head.

"I have protected Jeremy all my life from men like his father. I have tried my best. I hear Jeremy talk about you, but he talks about you differently. He doesn't even talk about the men who have been in my life like you. I felt you were just like others who try to use my son to win my love."

"No... I am not. I assure you."

She went on to tell me about Jeremy and how he was born with sickle cell anemia. She said it was just one wrong encounter with his father that led to his birth. And when the father realized that Jeremy had sickle cell, he left her and the boy to suffer alone.

They were never married. Jeremy never met him. Not even for once.

Then she said to me.

"For the first time in 10 years. I called him on the phone and cried. I told him his son whom he abandoned me with may be no more. Jeremy scared me. It was the biggest scare of my life. His father threatened me that if anything happened to his son, he would deal with me. A man who was never there for Jeremy suddenly throwing insults and threats at me. Men."

I will drop the concluding part of what happened yesterday later in the day. You all deserve to know.

It is Saturday.

I am on my way to the hospital this morning to see Jeremy. I bought a water flask and took some fruits along for Jeremy. His mother has been by his side since yesterday.

She is a nice woman.

Part 6
When I got home, I had my bath and quickly drove straight to the teaching hospital.

I was so concerned about seeing Jeremy that I forgot to ask how and where I was going to see him or his mother when I got to the hospital. I only remembered this when I was already halfway to the hospital.

I stepped on the brakes to think. And when I couldn't think of any solution apart from turning back and heading home again, I decided to just drive and hope that when I got to the hospital my luck would shine.

It was as if God was there with me.

When I got to the hospital, I saw a particular neighbor who stays in my area. He was walking out of the hospital reception.

I intercepted him and he was surprised to see me at the hospital.

"Uncle Praises, wetin bring you?"

"I came to see that boy. I heard he was rushed to the hospital."

"Yes o. He is on Oxygen."

He turned trying to direct me to the exact ward.

"Bro, what happened to him? I saw him just last night o."

"According to his mother, he slumped while she was shouting at him. The boy just collapsed."

"Just like that?"

"He usually falls ill like that. The mother told me today that he has sickle cell and she has been battling it with him. You know she is a nurse. That was what helped her manage the condition with him all this while."

"I never knew. No one will even know he has sickle cell. He looks healthy."

"I didn't even know until now. But this time, seeing him on Oxygen drained me. His mum has been by his side all along. I am rushing to work now. At least I have brought them to the hospital."

I glanced back.

"You brought them with your car?"

"Yes. She had to run and call me around 3am because her son was running a temperature and had collapsed for the 3rd time."

"Where is he, sir?"

The man pointed towards a staircase and asked me to climb and take my right.

"Ward 12. The pediatric ward. 3rd floor. Bed 15."

I thanked him and ran in the direction he had shown me. I was able to locate Ward 12. It was a big hall.

But then there were so many children there. One by one, I saw kids. Children with fire burns, sick, tired, children on Oxygen, and those crying. I saw mothers. Mothers in pain who were staying beside their kids and praying for them to get better.

I searched with my eyes for the bed number Jeremy was and kept looking and walking until I found him lying alone on a bed.

There was an oxygen tank beside him. Jeremy's eyes were closed. His mum was not there. I sat beside him and held his hands.

Just then his eyes opened. He looked at me and muttered weakly.

"Dad..."

"Shhh! Don't talk. Jeremy... I am here."

Just then his mother walked in holding a nylon containing beverages and bread. She halted as she saw me. Then her eyes went to Jeremy.

She ran to him and turned to me.

"He is awake. When did he wake?"

At that moment I knew it was God at work again.

I will continue this story 8am tomorrow.

I left the hospital this evening and will return tomorrow morning. I am tired and had to struggle to write this episode so everyone will be updated.

Thank God for life.

Part 5

Jeremy was rushed to the hospital this morning.

Last night I kept having this banging headache when I got home. I feared I may have a fever because of the rain that drenched me to my pants.

I had my bath, covered myself up with a blanket, and just kept staring at the ceiling.

I couldn't sleep.

Jeremy was all I could think of. I felt the boy's pain. I knew he liked me as a person and shared a special bond with me. No wonder he calls me dad. It was not just a name he came up with. He had other options. But he chose dad and I knew it was because he loved me and saw me as one.

I kept asking myself why the mother reacted that way towards me. In my head, I was calculating my next approach and how I could win her trust so I could be close to Jeremy. It was while I was still thinking that I fell asleep.

This morning, I woke up and went outside to buy bread. Purposely, I took the street leading to Jeremy's house hoping to see him.

But instead, I saw people in front of Jeremy's house. I knew at that moment something was wrong. Their faces carried concern. The door was locked with a padlock.

Today is Sallah and a public holiday. Jeremy isn't going to school today. He was supposed to be home.

Curious, I went to ask a woman whom I knew around.

"Ma hope all is well. This one I am seeing people."

"Yes, it is well. I woke up as well and was told that this woman's son was rushed to the hospital by 4am this morning."

"What happened?"

"I don't know too. But they said he use to be sick that way."

I became disorganized at that moment.

I asked the woman which hospital he was taken to and I was told he was taken to the teaching hospital.

I returned home quickly.

I couldn't even buy the bread anymore.

I kept thinking about what to do next.

But in the midst of this, I thanked God that Jeremy's mother didn't accept the food I bought them last night when I went to visit.

What would have been my story now?

I would have been more scared than I already am.

I am preparing to go to the hospital.

I pray it is nothing serious lord.

I just pray Father.

Part 4

This evening I planned to meet with Jeremy's mother the moment I returned from work.

His mum goes out very early in the morning and comes back late at night. Since it was about to rain heavily, I felt the mum would have returned home earlier today.

So when I got back home this evening, I changed and headed straight for an eatery to buy some snacks for Jeremy. I bought an extra plate for the mother as well. I took these snacks and went to the house to knock.

Jeremy was the one who opened the door when I knocked. He paused like he had seen a ghost. Then he glanced back and returned his gaze to me and whispered.

"Dad."

I whispered back.

"Jeremy."

Is your mummy in?"

"Yes. She just came back."

"Tell her I want to see her."

He froze for a moment. I could see fear in his eyes.

"Will you be in trouble?" I asked.

He nodded his head.

I understood his fear. I knew he was scared of his mother's reaction. Especially as she had already warned him about me.

Just as I was about to turn back, his mother showed up at the door and opened the curtain. She must have heard my voice when I was talking with Jeremy.

She pushed Jeremy behind her and the boy just went inside.

"Good evening."

"What do you want?"

"I came to talk with you and I also brought some snacks and food for you and for Jeremy too. I stopped by the eatery."

Jeremy was peeping through the window and I could see his face.

"Did Jeremy tell you we were hungry?"

"No...no. Not at all. I just wanted to see you and discuss with you. So I felt I shouldn't come empty-handed. I thought of what to get and believe me this was the best thing I could come up with."

"We are not hungry, sir. We just ate dinner not long ago."

I nodded.

"Can I come in. So we talk?"

"About what?"

"Ummm... I understand you do not know me that well. I am your neighbor. I stay just over there. Jeremy and I have been friends and I met him once when I gave him a lift to school and since then I have been giving him lifts to school."

"Are you a driver?"

"No... I am a writer and script writer and I work for an establishment as well."

"So since you are not a driver why are you interested in giving him a lift?"

"I just... I mean since we go out together in the morning and I... Madam listen. Jeremy is a nice boy and I have seen him as my son as well as you have. I just wanted you to understand..."

"Jeremy is not looking for a father. If he were I would have shown him where his father is. Please stay clear from my son. Please."

She entered the house and shut the door angrily. For a moment I felt embarassed and useless.

Jeremy waved at me and I waved back. I do not know if he was saying sorry or saying goodnight to me. But before I could wave back, his mother forcefully dragged him away from the window.

I felt bad.

I turned and left.

On my way home, I got beaten by the rain. My clothes were drentched. It was as if the heavens were in agreement with her.

I do not know if to stay off or try one more time.

I do not know at all.

Part 3

I went to Jeremy's school yesterday. I went and parked in front of the school.

It was the same spot I parked on Tuesday when I came to look for him.

When the school had closed, I stepped down from the car, I was anxiously watching to see Jeremy walk out of the gate. I waited for a while and suddenly, I saw him amongst a group of friends strolling out.

One of his friends tapped him on his back and pointed to me. Jeremy screamed in excitement.

"Daddy..."

And ran to me. He embraced me warmly. His friends came to say hello to me. I greeted each of them, brought out some change, and gave to them to buy something for themselves on their way home.

They were so happy.

Jeremy looked at me.

"You came to pick me up?"

"Yes. I did."

He grinned in excitement and waved at his friends.

"Bye, everyone. See you tomorrow."

And he entered the car.

While we were driving I noticed a finger mark on Jeremy's cheek. It was like a cut. It had the shape of a fingernail.

"Who gave you this cut on your face, Jeremy?"

He touched it with his hands.

"My mum. She slapped me this morning."

"Why?"

He looked at me and turned his gaze back to the road.

"My mum insists that I should take the public bus to school from now on. She doesn't want me to follow you anymore."

"Why?"

"I do not know."

"Before now, did she know I dropped you off at school?"

"Sometimes. I told her."

"And she is not happy I do that?"

He nodded his head and turned to look at the road.

"I came by at your house today and heard her shouting at you. I am sorry I could not intervene. I was scared it would make things worse for you."

He was speechless.

While driving past Kilimanjaro, an eatery at the old airport, he kept staring at the place. I saw his face and knew he'd want to go in. So I took a turn into the building.

I told him to come down so we could buy some snacks together.

He smiled.

We walked in, picked some snacks and ice cream and both walked out.

While we were driving home, Jeremy said to me.

"Thank you, Dad. My friends have told me about about how they visited this place. Today I visited it too and will tell them the story. Tomorrow they'll also be telling me how rich my dad is because of the money you gave them today."

I laughed.

I dropped off Jeremy at home and drove back to work.

This morning I waited until 7:15 and when I didn't see Jeremy come to my house as he usually does, I drove off to work. I knew he had taken the bus just like his mother instructed.

I am at work now, and considering the second option.

I want to meet Jeremy's mum tonight. I am not evil. I am just a young man who loves her son as much as she does.

Part 2

So yesterday I kept wondering what the problem with Jeremy was.

Their school closes by 2 pm. So by 1:30 pm, I was already at Jeremy's school to pick him up so I could take him back home. I parked in front of the school gate, just across the road.

Jeremy had once told me that his mum always left the key behind so he could pick it up and gain entrance to the house when he returned from school.

While waiting for him, a young boy waved at me and shouted.

"Daddy Jeremy."

He was walking with two other young boys who waved at me in excitement.

I smiled and waved back. Then quickly called them.

"Have you seen Jeremy today?" I asked.

"No sir. He didn't come to school."

"He didn't?"

"Yes."

I thanked them and watched as they left. Well since Jeremy did not come to school, I felt probably he took a day off that day.

This morning I waited for Jeremy again. I had dressed up very early and was already set to leave the house.

When it was 6:50 am, and Jeremy didn't show up, I decided to drive to his house to pick him up.

I got to his house and horned. Then I stepped down to walk to the door.

I heard Jeremy crying from inside. His mother was seriously shouting at him.

"So if he is not taking you to school you are not going to school? Is he your father? What is wrong with you? What has he given you to eat. Will you get dressed and go to school now. Are you stup'd? Or is something wrong with you?"

I paused.

I knew this whole thing was about me.

I couldn't knock. I didn't know what her reaction would be next if she sees me.

I heard running footsteps hitting the floor. I heard hands bagging tables. I heard Jeremy's cries and his mother shouting.

Suddenly I heard her beating him again.

"Pick your bags and go to school like other children. Go and join the bus now."

I turned back, got into my car, and drove off.

I didn't even know when a teardrop left my eyes.

I feel hurt today.

Really hurt.

Today started out badly for me and not until I am sure Jeremy is fine, I may not be at rest.

Part 1

So I usually give my neighbor's son, Jeremy, a lift to school whenever I am going to work. He knows I leave home by 7 so by 6:30 he is at my gate waiting for me to take him to school.

He is always on time and never comes late. I felt the mother was helping him keep to time as well but I never asked. Me and her has never spoken or talked before. I rarely see her because she leaves home as early as 6 am and returns late at night.

Something bothered me.

Anytime I drop Jeremy at school, he says thank you, Dad embraces me and runs off.

Haa!

I felt it was strange. I wondered why he called me dad instead of Uncle.

So I asked him one time whole taking him to school.

"How about your daddy?"

"I don't know him. Mum says he is somewhere and she doesn't know where."

"So why do you call me daddy when I drop you off in school."

"Well because I see you as my daddy. In my school, everyone's dad drops them off at school. And you drop me off at school too."

I smiled.

I understood where the dad thing was coming from.

On Friday, while driving him to school I noticed he was not happy. He was very quiet all through the ride. I asked him what the problem was and he told me.

"Our school asked our parents to come for an important meeting on Monday. Mummy said she will not be able to come because she will be busy in Monday."

"Is that why you are sad?"

He nodded his head.

"Everyone father and mother will come. My mother will not be there."

I asked him to cheer up.

On Monday morning, after I dropped him off at school. He came down and said bye Dad.

I noticed he wasn't happy.

I drove off and by 9am I decided to return to the school to attend the meeting.

When his mates saw me, someone shouted.

"Jeremy, see your daddy. He shouted and ran to embrace me."

He held my hands and took me to where the meeting was being held.

After the meeting, I left.

He was very happy I showed up. I could see the pride in his face.

This morning, I waited for Jeremy and didn't see him. I went to his house and was told he had gone to school.

This is the first time in 2 months he is going without me.

I am just worried.

Really worried.
