The Farmer Who Shared the Last Meal

Long ago, in a small village surrounded by green fields, there lived a poor farmer named Daniel. He worked from sunrise to sunset, planting maize, tending his vegetables, and caring for his few chickens.

That year, the rain refused to come. The crops withered, the river became shallow, and food became scarce. Daniel had only one small bag of grain left in his house.

One evening, after a long day in the fields, Daniel cooked the last portion of food he had. He sat down, hungry and tired, and prepared to eat.

Just as he lifted the first spoon to his mouth, there was a knock at the door.

“Who is there?” Daniel asked.

“Please, sir,” a weak voice answered. “I am a traveler. I have been walking for days, and I have not eaten since yesterday.”

Daniel opened the door and saw an old man standing outside, exhausted and trembling.

Daniel looked at his small bowl of food. It was all he had. If he gave it away, he would have nothing left to eat.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Then he smiled and said, “Come inside. A hungry man should never sleep outside when there is food in the house.”

Daniel divided the meal into two portions and gave the larger one to the traveler.

The old man ate slowly, tears in his eyes.

“Why would you share your last meal with a stranger?” he asked.

Daniel replied, “Because tomorrow, I may be the stranger who needs someone else’s kindness.”

The traveler thanked him and slept peacefully that night.

The next morning, before leaving, the old man revealed that he was not an ordinary traveler. He was a wealthy landowner who had been traveling secretly through the villages to discover how people treated those in need.

“I have met many people who had plenty but refused to share,” he said. “You had almost nothing, yet you gave me what you had.”

He rewarded Daniel with seeds, farming tools, and enough food to rebuild his farm.

Months later, the rains finally returned. Daniel’s fields became green again, and his harvest was greater than he had ever imagined.

But Daniel never forgot that evening.

From that day forward, whenever someone in the village was hungry, he shared whatever he could.

And the people remembered him not because he became a successful farmer, but because when he had only one meal left, he chose kindness over hunger.

Moral: True generosity is not measured by how much you have, but by how willing you are to share what you have.
