National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult Education, and Non-formal Education Restates Commitment to Eradicating Illiteracy
Empowers Youths, Adults with Deep Freezers, Sewing Machines, Other materials
The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult Education, and Non-formal Education, NMEC, has restated its commitment to eradicating illiteracy in Nigeria and providing non-formal and continuing education within the context of lifelong learning for sustainable development.
The acting executive secretary of the commission, Dr. John Onimisi gave the assurance in Benin City, Edo State, at the presentation of vocational skills materials/equipment. in the south-south zone.
Represented by the Director of Vocational Education and Continuing Education in the commission, Mrs. Nnana Ejieji, the acting executive secretary emphasised that the agency commitment go beyond educating members of the society but also in creating vocational centres that would serve as employers of labour.
While observing that youth and adult illiteracy is an unacceptable social anomaly brought about by various factors, including economic, social and cultural inequality, Dr. Onimisi noted that the commission's vision to eradicate illiteracy in the country requires all hands to be on deck to translate the vision into reality.
The acting executive secretary of NMEC, futther stated that the commission is using the "Literacy through Economic Empowerment Strategy (LEES)" to make adult and non-formal education more attractive. and erase the ill-conceived notion that adult and non-formal education is a charade and an effort in futility.
Edo State Commissioner for Education, Mr. Paddy Iyamu, represented by the state director of the Edo State Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Ivory Ibrahim, applauded the federal government’s commitment to take her citizens out of the street through vocational training.
Similarly, the Edo State chairman of the Non-Governmental Association for Literacy Support Service, NOGALSS, Mr. Davis Ogbogbo, said his office would continue to partner with government at all levels to provide much-needed manpower to create jobs for the teeming youths.
Highlights of the event, which had Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States as participating states from the South-South Geo-Political Zone was the presentation of vocational materials to beneficiaries of the learners' economic empowerment scheme of the federal government.
Some beneficiaries, Ogbona Obinna and Jennifer Ese, expressed appreciation to the federal government for putting the program in place.
Items presented to the beneficiaries included sewing machines, deep freezers, and cookers, among others.
