No Love at First Sight

I recently had a conversation with a friend about the popular phrase "Love at First Sight," and I've come to disagree with it over time.

In my view, it's more accurately described as "lust" at first sight." When you first meet someone, you're naturally attracted to some aspect of that person. This initial attraction ignites passion and a desire to learn more about them or to satisfy your initial longing. However, I believe true love only emerges after a deeper connection is established. If the initial spark doesn't fade after fulfilling those urges driven by lust, you may begin to notice the qualities that make you want to keep that person in your life. This process can lead you to become someone worthy of love in return.

I also think we often misuse the phrase "I love you." What we usually feel is a strong attraction and commitment. When we really like someone and feel a strong connection, we don’t want to hurt them, so we tend to add loyalty and compromise into the mix.

Ultimately, we should strive to be certain when we reach the level of true love. When we truly love someone, the petty behaviors that often characterize our relationships begin to fade.
