*STOP ILLEGAL LOGGING OR FACE THE WRATH OF THE LAW – EDO FORESTRY BOSS WARNS ILLEGAL LOGGERS*

In line with the Edo state Forestry Commission's mission to regulate, conserve, and enhance capacity in sustainable management and exploitation of forest and wildlife resources.

The Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission, Hon. Valentine Asuen, has issued a stern warning to illegal loggers in the state to desist from nefarious activities or face the full force of the law. This warning follows the commission's recent interception of a truckload of illegal logs in Obazogbe community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.

According to a statement released by the Commission, the alarming rate of deforestation and environmental degradation in the state, which has led to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and increased flood risk, necessitates this action. "We will no longer tolerate the activities of illegal loggers in our state," Asuen said. "These individuals are not only causing harm to our environment, but they are also depriving the state of revenue and undermining the efforts of legitimate foresters who are working hard to conserve our forest resources through policy development, strategic partnerships, and promotion of conservation practices and eco-tourism."

The Commission, vowing to uphold its mandate, has pledged to work closely with security agencies to identify and prosecute anyone found engaging in illegal logging activities. "We have the mandate to protect our forest resources, and we will not hesitate to take action against anyone who is found to be flouting the law," Asuen emphasized.

The chairman urged residents of the state to report any incidents of illegal logging to the Commission, assuring that all reports will be thoroughly investigated and action taken. Asuen's warning comes on the heels of a recent crackdown on illegal logging activities in the state, which resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of timber worth millions of naira.

The Edo Forestry Boss used the opportunity to call on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents, to join hands in the fight against illegal logging and forest degradation. "Together, we can protect our forest resources and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,"the Commission stated.

CHARTING A NEW COURSE: AN ANALYSIS ON GOVERNOR MONDAY OKPEBHOLO'S EARLY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EDO ECONOMY

(C) MODEN RESPONSE TEAM

Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, as the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has initiated a clear economic blueprint centered on fiscal prudence, security enhancement, and the development of key sectors. One of the most immediate and tangible contributions to the state's economy is the reported success in strengthening the financial base.

The administration has significantly boosted the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to over ₦10 billion, marking the highest in the state's history, a feat attributed to prudent financial management strategies.
Furthermore, a core principle of his "home-grown economy" policy involves the disengagement of "wasteful consultants." This move aims to re-invest state resources directly into the public service for improved efficiency and greater local control over finances and projects, thereby reducing capital flight and fostering a more independent economic structure.

The Governor's economic development plan prioritizes several key areas designed to foster sustainable growth and job creation, with a strong focus on Agriculture and Food Security. Efforts have been directed toward empowering farmers through initiatives like the Framework for Responsible and Inclusive Land-Intensive Agricultural Investment (FRILIA), which seeks to balance large-scale investment with community protection.

This focus is complemented by infrastructure improvements, particularly the repair of rural roads, which are vital for helping farmers transport produce to markets, a critical step for reducing food inflation and achieving economic stability. Beyond agriculture, the administration has also recognized the importance of grassroots enterprise by supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through soft loans and improvements to market infrastructure.

Finally, the Okpebholo administration has sought to create a more stable and secure operating environment for businesses, recognizing that economic growth is inseparable from security and stability. Measures to tackle insecurity, a major deterrent to investment, have included the recovery of illegal arms and the procurement of operational vehicles for security agencies. The judicial and legislative frameworks have also been targeted with the amendment of the Anti-Cultism and Anti-Kidnapping Law to include stiffer penalties. These deliberate, multi-pronged efforts—encompassing fiscal discipline, strategic sectoral investment, and enhanced security—indicate a clear, action-oriented direction towards achieving the Governor's ambition for Edo to become one of Nigeria’s leading economic powerhouses.
