Guinness Isn't Leaving Nigeria: Tolaram takes over Diageo's shares in Guinness Nigeria What the headlines didn’t say

In selling its majority shareholding in Guinness Nigeria to Indonesian conglomerate Tolaram, Diageo was merely following the business practice it has executed in countries such as Cameroon, Ethiopia and Mauritius, South Africa and Namibia.

Since beer sales only form 15% of its global turnover, with the Guinness brand posting 16% of its profit, Diageo has been fine-tuning ways to increase profitability.

In Ethiopia, it sold its Meta Abo brewery to Castel in January 2022. In July of the same year, Diageo also sold its brewery in Cameroon to Castel for $460m and licensed it to produce the Guinness brand, as it did in Mauritius with Phoenix Beverages.

As Diageo sold breweries in Africa, it invested in its brewing capabilities in Ireland, with $200m going towards a second brewing facility. The investment was expected to free up space for Guinness at its home in Dublin, reported Global Drinks Intel last December.

News reports claiming that the multinational is totally exiting Nigeria are misleading.

Diageo will still maintain its footprints in Nigeria, going by the statement released by Guinness on Tuesday. In selling its Guinness Nigeria shares to Tolaram, Diageo will enter into long-term licence and royalty agreements for the continued production of the Guinness brand and its locally manufactured Diageo ready-to-drink and mainstream brands in Nigeria.

The statement added: "In partnership with Guinness Nigeria and Tolaram, Diageo will continue to drive the brand and marketing strategy for Guinness in Nigeria, to ensure Diageo’s exceptional capabilities in brand building and innovation continue to drive long-term growth for Guinness in Nigeria".

Nigeria can’t continue to be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu said Nigeria can not continue to be a Father Christmas to the neighbouring countries in the guise of subsidy on the premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol.

Tinubu stated this at a meeting with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) at A*o Rock on Friday.

The President noted that his administration took the right decision by removing the subsidy on petrol.

He described the subsidy as an elephant that could have brought the country to its knees because it is struggling to pay salaries.

He said Nigeria should not be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries by providing them subsidised petrol.

Tinubu said, “I am grateful that you are paying attention to what I have been doing,” Abiodun Oladunjoye, the villa’s director of information, quoted the president as saying.

“You have paid attention to the subsidy removal. Why should we in good heart and sense, feed smugglers and be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries, even though they say not everyday is Christmas?

“The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy. A country that cannot pay salaries and we say we have potential to encourage ourselves.

“I think we did the right thing.”

The President, however, said his administration would listen to counsel.

He said, “We are all ears. We are ready to listen at any given time. I promise you an open-door policy and that is the way I will go. That open-door policy is for you to call me and send to me at any given time any concern that you might have.

“We may not have it right 100 percent of the time but we must get it right 90 percent of the time for this country.”

Also speaking at the meeting, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar, said the traditional rulers are in full support of Tinubu’s administration.

He said, “We are 100 percent in support of your government and we believe in the will of the Almighty Allah you will move this country forward.”

PHOTOS: Nigerian Police Recover Over 40 Government Vehicles From Zamfara Ex-Governor, Matawalle’s Residence

Confirming the development in a statement, Sulaiman, Bala Idris, the spokesperson of the state governor, Dauda Lawal-Dare, revealed that the police acted on a court order and a search warrant was obtained for the operation.

The Nigeria Police Force on Friday stormed the residence of the immediate past Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, and recovered over 40 vehicles.
Confirming the development in a statement, Sulaiman, Bala Idris, the spokesperson of the state governor, Dauda Lawal-Dare, revealed that the police acted on a court order and a search warrant was obtained for the operation.

The statement read in part, “Recall that the Zamfara State Government has communicated officially to former Governor Bello Matawalle and his Deputy to return all the missing vehicles within five (5) working days.

“We also lodged an official complaint with the police on overriding public interest on the wasteful looting of valuables including official vehicles.

“Consequently, the police sought a search warrant which was duly given by the court and hence raided Matawalle’s residence in Gusau, Maradun Local Government, and another unidentified hideout.

“Over 40 vehicles were recovered including three bulletproof vehicles and eight SUVs.
“We want to reaffirm our commitment to recover all that belongs to the people. Our common resolve is to rescue and rebuild Zamfara. Recovering the proceeds of crime and public assets is a critical part of our rescue mission.

“We want to call on the people of Zamfara to remain calm as we continue to record massive improvements in the areas of security and the lingering water scarcity in the state.”
