THE D∆NGEROUS LIE SOME SCHOOLS TELL PARENTS: “YOUR CHILD IS DOING FINE”

A child fails Mathematics, English and other important subjects in a class…

Instead of asking: “What went wrong, and how do we fix it?”

Some schools choose the easier path.

They add marks. They adjust scores. They promote the child to the next class. They make the report card look beautiful.

Why?

Because they don't want parents to complain. They want the school to appear successful. They want more admissions.

But the truth they hide is this:

A promoted child is not always a progressing child.

Imagine a child who struggled in JSS1 but was moved to JSS2. The same child struggled in JSS2 but was moved to JSS3. The same child was pushed through SS1, SS2 and eventually allowed to sit for WAEC.

The results may even look acceptable because of "help" along the way.

Then the child enters the university.
Suddenly, nobody is adding marks anymore. Nobody is adjusting scores anymore. Nobody is helping the child cover years of weak foundation.

The lecturer moves at the expected pace. Assignments come with deadlines. Examinations test understanding, not appearance.

And that child who was celebrated as "doing well" begins to struggle badly.
Not because the child is not intelligent
But because the foundation was ignored for too long.

Passing a child without preparing the child is not kindness. It is a delay of the problem.
Parents, don't only celebrate high scores.

Ask: "Can my child truly solve problems?"
"Can my child think independently?"
"Does my child understand what he or she is being taught?"

Schools, our responsibility is not to make children look successful.

Our responsibility is to make them become successful.

A certificate can open a door…

But competence is what keeps a person inside.

It's the one who stopped learning years ago.

Education changes.

Reflects.

Mathematics teaches children how to:

✔ Stay patient when solutions don't come immediately
✔ Break big problems into smaller steps
✔ Keep trying even after making mistakes

But when mathematics is poorly taught, the damage goes beyond low test scores.

A child who repeatedly hears "wrong answer" without understanding why starts to think:

"Maybe I'm not smart enough."

And that belief can follow them for years.

This is why great teachers are so important.

A great mathematics teacher does more than explain formulas.

They build confidence.

They turn fear into curiosity.

But many Nigerians are still asking questions about the safety of their children today.

What does campaigning matter to a parent whose child is missing? What does political advertising mean to a family waiting for news of a kidnapped loved one?

For many citizens, the most important campaign promise is not a slogan.

It is security.

Because if a government cannot guarantee that students can go to school safely, people will naturally question every other promise being made.

Schools should be places of learning, not places of fear.

Children should be discussing mathematics, science, and their dreams for the future—not becoming symbols of a security crisis.

This is why many Nigerians are frustrated.
They want to see results.
They want to see action.
They want to know that every child matters.

A government's greatest achievement is not what it says at campaign rallies.
It is the lives it protects.

This might be controversial...

But hear me out.

A parent gives a child life.

A teacher can give that child direction.

Think about it.

A child spends years sitting in classrooms, listening, observing, learning, and absorbing ideas.
One teacher tells a student: "You are not good enough."

That student may carry that belief for years.
Another teacher says: "I believe in you."
And suddenly a future doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, scientist, or leader is born.
The difference?

A mindset.

And mindsets change lives.
What many people fail to realize is that teachers rarely influence just one person.

They influence people who go on to influence other people.
One teacher inspires a student.
That student builds a company and employs 500 people.

One teacher encourages a future doctor.
That doctor saves thousands of lives.
One teacher develops a future leader.
That leader makes decisions affecting millions.

The teacher may never appear in the headlines.
But their influence is hidden inside every success story.
This is why I laugh when people say teaching is "just a job."

No.

Teaching is one of the few professions where your impact can multiply for generations.

But those words can echo through families, communities, businesses, and even entire nations.

When a Teacher Finally Realizes His Worth...

I once heard of a school that refused to create a cooperative society for its teachers.

Not because it was expensive.
Not because it was difficult.
But because some people feared that if teachers had access to savings and extra funds, they would become too independent.

Think about that.

A school entrusted with teaching children about growth, ambition, and success was afraid of its own teachers growing.

The logic was simple:
If teachers have money, they may leave.
But here's the truth many school owners don't understand:
Teachers don't leave because they have money.

Teachers leave because they finally discover they deserve better.
No amount of financial struggle can buy genuine loyalty.

In fact, when a teacher realizes that his employer is intentionally limiting his opportunities, something changes.

The classroom may still be occupied.

The lessons may still be taught.

But the passion begins to disappear.

And when passion leaves, resignation is only a matter of time.

Some School Owners Don't Want Their Teachers to Prosper.

Yes, I said it.

I know a school that had a simple opportunity to help its teachers build financial security.

A cooperative society.

Nothing complicated.

Just a system where teachers could save little by little and have something meaningful to collect at the end of the term or year.

But the idea was rejected.

Why?

Because according to some people, if teachers have enough money, they might start chasing bigger opportunities.

Read that again.

Imagine being afraid that your staff might become financially stable.

Imagine preferring that teachers remain desperate because desperation makes them easier to control.

The irony is that the same schools complain about teacher turnover.

The same schools complain that teachers are not loyal.

The same schools complain that teachers leave as soon as they find something better.
But loyalty cannot grow where growth is intentionally blocked.

A teacher who has access to savings, investments, and financial support is not more likely to leave.
In many cases, they are more likely to stay because they feel valued.

The schools with the strongest staff retention are often the schools that help their teachers grow—not just professionally, but financially.

The question is:
Do some schools genuinely want teachers to succeed, or do they only want teachers to survive?

The doctor.

Thousands.
Maybe millions.

The truth is this:

So what happens to teachers?
