TINUBU POSTPONES FOREIGN TRIPS AS SECURITY CRISES DEEPEN IN KEBBI AND KWARA

President Bola Tinubu has postponed his planned trips to Johannesburg for the G20 Summit and to Luanda for the AU–EU Summit as he awaits security briefings on the mass abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, the killing of Brigadier-General Musa Uba, and the deadly attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

The President ordered additional security deployment to Kwara following Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s request and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted Kebbi students.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on Tinubu’s behalf, described the abduction as a national tragedy and assured that all state apparatus would be used to recover the girls while honouring the slain vice principal who died protecting his students.

Meanwhile, outrage spread across northern communities as religious bodies, traditional rulers, and residents condemned the rising insecurity.

Jama’atu Nasril Islam criticised gaps in security coordination and compared the Kebbi school attack to previous mass abductions in Chibok, Dapchi, and Kankara, insisting that authorities must move beyond reactive measures.

In Kwara, three worshippers were killed and many abducted during an attack on a church, prompting protests that blocked the Ilorin–Kabba highway and led to a heavy military deployment in Eruku.

Security forces also engaged bandits in Kebbi during clearance operations, sustaining several injuries while neutralising multiple attackers.

International concern grew as U.S. Senator Jim Risch accused Nigeria of failing to protect schoolchildren and vowed continued engagement and accountability over persistent attacks.

FG REBUTS TRUMP’S ‘CHRISTIAN GENOCIDE’ CLAIM, SAYS NIGERIA NEEDS SUPPORT—NOT FOREIGN TROOPS

The Federal Government has strongly rejected what it described as a “dangerous and inaccurate” narrative of Christian genocide in Nigeria, allegedly promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said Nigeria does not require foreign troops on its soil, stressing that the Armed Forces are professional and fully capable of managing the country’s security challenges.

He warned that such claims are emboldening violent groups and worsening insecurity, noting that no credible international organisation has ever classified Nigeria’s conflict as genocide against Christians or any other group.

Akume explained that the nation faces two distinct forms of insecurity, ideological insurgency by Boko Haram and ISWAP, and economically driven banditry in the North-West, both of which have victimised Christians and Muslims alike.

Rejecting assertions of systematic extermination of Christians, Akume said evidence shows that terrorists and criminal networks attack both churches and mosques, and that the genocide narrative is now fuelling sectarian suspicion and giving extremist groups renewed propaganda leverage.

He traced part of Nigeria’s security woes to weapons proliferation following the 2011 collapse of Libya, which strengthened terrorist networks across the Sahel.

The SGF appealed to international partners, particularly the U.S., to provide targeted support through intelligence sharing, technology, and equipment rather than public mischaracterisation.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s secular foundation and inclusive governance structure, he urged citizens to unite against terrorism and banditry, emphasising that both Nigeria and the United States share a responsibility to strengthen democratic values and regional stability.

CASSAVA TAKES CENTER STAGE AT AFRICA CONFERENCE, EMERGING AS KEY TO FOOD SECURITY AND INDUSTRIAL GROWTH

Cassava’s crucial role in Africa’s food security and industrialisation was reaffirmed at the three-day Africa Cassava Conference in Abuja, where experts, policymakers, and industry leaders highlighted the crop’s economic and nutritional importance.

Dr. Henry Emejuo, Director-General of the Pan-African Organisation for Small and Medium Industries, described cassava as an indispensable staple in African households and a versatile industrial raw material used in the production of ethanol, high-quality flour, sorbitol, and other manufacturing inputs.

Delegates from more than seven African countries examined policy, technical, and scientific issues shaping the cassava value chain. Speakers, including representatives from the Nigeria Cassava Growers Association and academics from South Sudan and Ghana, emphasized the need for improved farming practices, financing, mechanization, and stronger cross-country collaboration.

Participants noted that Nigeria’s leadership in cassava production offers a model for other nations, particularly in extension services, processing, marketing, and research.

Prof. Emmanuel Bobobee of Ghana highlighted the transformative potential of mechanised cassava harvesting, while Prof. Michael Kento of South Sudan expressed interest in adopting Nigeria’s innovations to boost his country’s food security and industrial growth.

The conference concluded with a call to position cassava at the core of Africa’s next phase of industrial development, capped by a dinner and awards recognising notable contributors to the sector.

COURT JAILS ISWAP COMMANDER 20 YEARS AS TERRORISM TRIALS ADVANCE IN ABUJA

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced ISWAP commander Hussaini Ismaila, also known as Mai Tangaran, to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment on Tuesday, finding Ismaila guilty of orchestrating coordinated attacks on multiple police formations in Kano State in 2012, including the Bompai Police Headquarters, Kabuga Mobile Police Base, Pharm Centre Station, and Angwa Uku Station.

Arrested in 2017, Ismaila’s trial was prolonged by interlocutory appeals and a trial-within-trial, but he changed his plea after the fifth prosecution witness testified.

He received 15 years on count one and 20 years on counts two to four, to run concurrently from his arrest date, August 31, 2017.

The court further ordered that he undergo rehabilitation and deradicalisation after completing his sentence.

Meanwhile, the terrorism trial of alleged Ansaru leaders Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba has been adjourned to January 15, 2026.

The duo faces a 32-count charge ranging from terrorism financing and arms procurement to kidnapping and illegal mining, linked to activities between 2015 and 2024.

Usman, who has already been sentenced to 15 years for illegal mining to fund terrorism, pleaded guilty only to an economic-crime count, while Abba maintained his innocence on all charges.

The DSS alleges they carried out training in weapons and explosives, bombed the Wawa Military Cantonment, kidnapped security personnel, and collected ransom payments used for arms acquisition and militant training in Mali and Sudan.

A defence request to transfer the defendants to a correctional centre was opposed by DSS counsel David Kaswe, with Justice Nwite directing that proper procedures be followed before the next hearing.

FG REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR SAFE SCHOOL INITIATIVE, CELEBRATES EXCELLENCE ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ DAY

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to safeguarding learning environments nationwide, with the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, assuring continued funding for education, teacher salaries, school feeding, and the Safe School Initiative.

Speaking at the 2025 International Students’ Day celebration in Abuja, she described Nigerian youth as a shared national responsibility and praised their resilience, creativity, and role in shaping the country’s leadership and intellectual future.

The event, organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, also underscored the transformative impact of education on national development.

Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon, honoured top-performing students from universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and the Nigerian Law School with scholarships, laptops, cash prizes, and other empowerment tools, while exceptional secondary-school students each received N100,000.

He noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to student welfare and development.

As the nation marked International Students’ Day, originating from the 1939 N**i crackdown on Czech students, this year’s theme, “Empowering Students to be Agents of Change,” highlighted patriotism, productivity, and the advancement of student rights and unity.
