Political Tension Mounts in Rivers as APC Steps In Amid New Impeachment Move Against Fubara
Rivers State has once again been thrown into political uncertainty following the initiation of fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly. The development has sparked widespread reactions, prompting senior figures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intervene and caution against actions that could destabilise the state.
The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, announced the commencement of impeachment steps against the governor and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct. Central to the accusations is the claim that the governor failed to present the 2026 budget for legislative consideration, alongside other alleged constitutional breaches.
Lawmakers have reportedly issued a seven-day ultimatum for Governor Fubara to respond to the allegations, setting the stage for what could become another prolonged political confrontation in the oil-rich state.
This latest move represents the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara since he assumed office in May 2023 and is widely viewed as an extension of the ongoing power struggle between the governor and his former political ally, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Concerned by the rising tension, APC leaders in Rivers State have openly opposed the impeachment process, describing it as unnecessary and capable of plunging the state into further instability. Party leaders urged lawmakers to prioritise dialogue and constitutional order over political rivalry, warning that continued conflict could disrupt governance and economic activities.
Several civil society organisations and political observers have also condemned the impeachment move, arguing that the allegations lack sufficient constitutional grounding. They stressed that Rivers State cannot afford another period of political paralysis, especially amid economic challenges and security concerns.
As the situation unfolds, there are growing calls for federal intervention and mediation, with indications that the Presidency may again be drawn into efforts to broker peace among the warring factions.
For now, residents of Rivers State watch anxiously as political actors trade accusations, hoping that restraint and dialogue will prevail over escalation.
