As a way out getting out of my regulars,l tried my hands on weaving this manual, industrial sieve. Yes,you got me right: l weaved this sieve...Those in cassava value chain will readily identify it..the gari processors precisely! You see.. everyone living soul has this innate skill of which not quite a few allow to rust and perish for one nebulous reason or the other. Let me put it this way. If l decide to put my tie and suit by one side and decide to make a living weaving this sieve for sale, the challenge l will face will start right within my house: Side, mocking glances will begin!. Daddy,l hope everything is ok?! Et al. They can't understand that for me to come with that just by looking at one being used by a neighbor, without any training or apprenticeship, l do have a skill that if properly horn could become a money- making one...And this was a big minus in our educational system then, which l think successive governments have been trying to correct. Our educational system was geared towards working in offices-private and public, paying negligible attention to hands work, skill development and acquisition.
The introduction of STEM, Technical and Vocational Education will definitely be a game changer ; if given adequate attention and funding. Many have lost their ways professionally, because of the deeply ingrained tie and suit mentality. Everybody wants to be a lawyer, doctor, banker. Learning Technical and hands work are reserved for the academically deficient and dropouts. We forgot that our everyday living conveniences are products of STEM, technical and Vocational efforts.
If you have a varsity degree and also possees valuable skills, that can make significant impact in the society; Your qualification, should not be the killer or undertaker of your innate skills, in whatever way! It should rather be the bedrock or catalyst for your expression: a well research presentation by an educated mind compared to one by a secondary school dropout.Good money 💰
