When Passion Turns Violent: A Wake-Up Call for Nigerian Football
By Nasiru Ibrahim
The recent sanctions on Kano Pillars should serve as a wake-up call to everyone involved in Nigerian football. The beautiful game can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, order, and respect, not in violence and chaos.
No matter the passion or emotion that comes with football, violence is never the solution. Every act of aggression, whether by fans or officials, tarnishes the image of our league, drives away sponsors, and discourages families from coming to the stadium to enjoy live matches.
While clubs and supporters must take responsibility for their actions, referees also have a critical role to play in maintaining fairness and calm on the pitch. Their decisions can shape the mood of a match, which is why officiating must always be consistent, impartial, and transparent. A good referee helps to ease tension, while poor officiating can easily inflame tempers.
The NPFL’s decision to review the referees who handled the Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars game is commendable. It sends a clear message that accountability applies to everyone from fans and clubs to match officials.
Going forward, the league and the NFF should invest more in referee training, mental conditioning, and protection, ensuring that officials are well-prepared to handle pressure situations. At the same time, those who fail to uphold professional standards should face appropriate sanctions or retraining.
Football is a game of passion and unity. Let this incident remind all stakeholders clubs, supporters, referees, and administrators that discipline, fairness, and mutual respect remain the true pillars of progress for Nigerian football.
