BAUCHI FIRST LADY, DR. AISHA BALA MOHAMMED, UNVEILED AS 2026 ITN AMBASSADOR

The First Lady of Bauchi State, Hajiya (Dr.) Aisha Bala Mohammed, has been unveiled as the 2026 Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) Ambassador for Bauchi State, as part of efforts to strengthen malaria prevention and control across the state.

The unveiling took place at the New Banquet Hall, Government House, Bauchi, during the flag-off of the 2026 ITN campaign organised by the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA), in collaboration with malaria-control partners.

Speaking at the event, the First Lady urged residents to take greater responsibility for malaria prevention by maintaining clean surroundings and eliminating conditions that provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

She stressed that poor environmental sanitation and negligence can contribute to the spread of malaria, and called on communities to keep their homes and surroundings clean.

Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed pledged to work closely with the wives of Local Government Chairmen, who were also decorated as Net Advocates, to mobilise communities and promote the proper and consistent use of insecticide-treated nets across the state.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of BACATMA, Dr. Adamu Umar Sambo, said household mobilisation had commenced ahead of the distribution exercise. He announced that the official distribution campaign would begin on September 26, with the distribution of nets scheduled for September 27 to October 1 through designated schools.

Dr. Sambo urged residents to collect and properly use the nets for the purpose for which they were provided, noting that the government and development partners had committed resources to ensure their free distribution.

Representing the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Mohammed Danbam, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry said malaria remained a major public health challenge requiring sustained collective action by government, development partners and communities.

He noted that Bauchi State had continued to scale up malaria prevention and control interventions through the distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, malaria prevention services for pregnant women and improved case management in health facilities.

A representative of the development partners commended BACATMA for its leadership in coordinating training, mobilisation and other preparatory activities, expressing confidence that the First Lady’s role as ITN Ambassador would further strengthen community mobilisation and contribute to the state’s efforts to reduce the burden of malaria.

The 2026 ITN campaign is expected to reach households across Bauchi State, with stakeholders urging residents to collect the nets when distribution begins and use them properly as an important measure against malaria.
