Cult Violence Spreads to Benin Outskirts

By Wonderful Media
12 July, 2025

Fresh violence has erupted in the outskirts of Benin City, Edo State, as alleged cult wars between the Maohites and Aye (Black Axe) cult groups claim more lives. Graphic photos and videos of the recent killings have surfaced online, with sources indicating that over three suspected Aye cult members were gunned down few days ago at Oluku Terminal and Isihor.

This development follows renewed cult killings in the city over two weeks ago, which began with the murder of a suspected Maphite, a middle-aged man, Emma Big, allegedly killed by Aye cult members. The violence escalated with the killing of three vigilante members and two others in separate incidents.

Eyewitnesses reported that Big, a revenue collector for a drivers' union, was shot dead on Akugbe Street, while the vigilante members were killed at a residence on Wire Road in Oredo LGA.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killings, arrested suspected cultists, and pledged to prevent further reprisal attacks. However, the shift in attacks to the city's outskirts has raised concerns, prompting calls for increased police vigilance and patrols in these areas.

Breaking News: Hon. Sergius Ogun Picks Expression Form for Edo Central By-Election

In a significant development ahead of the Edo Central By-election scheduled for August 16, former Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Sergius Oseasachie Ogun (aka The Promise Keeper), has formally collected his expression of interest form from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Hon. Ogun, who previously represented Esan South East/Esan North East in the National Assembly from 2015-2023, had shown interest in governing Edo State but lost out in the Labour Party primary. After decamping to ADC, he has now taken a crucial step towards contesting the by-election.

With no other aspirant having declared interest in the ADC primary, there are speculations that Hon. Ogun might be the party's sole candidate. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

The Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the sum of ₦1 billion as bursary support for students of Edo State origin in tertiary institutions across the country.

Governor Okpebholo, during a town hall meeting with young people in Edo State recently, pledged to look into a passionate request made by various youth leaders.

The youths, had requested for the introduction of bursaries to assist Edo indigenes pursuing higher education in various institutions nationwide.

Edo Conducts Successful MBA Examination

By Innocent Okoh
6 July, 2025

The Edo State Ministry of Education conducted the 2025 Middle Basic Assessment (MBA) examination on Saturday, July 5, 2025, with over 3,000 learners from about 50 public and private schools participating in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.

Despite initial delays due to heavy rain, the examination commenced at 11 am, and the exercise was largely smooth and hitch-free. Journalists observed that the examination halls were filled to capacity, reflecting a significant increase in learner enrollment.

Supervisors Omosigho Matthew and Mrs. Charity Boro expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the Middle Basic Assessment (MBA) at Ase Primary School and Umagbai Secondary School examination centers respectively. Approximately 1,090 learners from 25 primary schools participated, and both centers had sufficient examination materials. The supervisors commended the cooperation of parents and learners, contributing to the smooth ex*****on of the examination.

Speaking to journalists, Education secretary of the LGA Mr. Elvis Ugiagbe, who went round the various centers to inspect the exercise, described the conduct of the examination as excellent, he praised the organizers for a job well done, noting that the conduct of the examination was excellent compared to last year. He commended the decentralization of the examination process and the involvement of private school proprietors.

The Education Secretary recommended that the State Ministry of Education build on the success of the examination by ensuring all centers start the exam simultaneously. He also suggested making provisions for reliable transportation to convey examination papers to centers, mitigating potential disruptions like the earlier heavy downpour.

This he said would further enhance the organization and smooth conduct of future examinations. The Middle Basic Assessment (MBA) examination features a range of subjects, including:

- Mathematics
- English
- General Paper
- Vocational Studies
- Christian Religious Studies (CRS)/Islamic Studies

He said, "The examination is excellent compared to the one of last year, even owners of private schools are happy because they were carried along from onset to this stage. The question papers and answer sheets were enough for all the pupils, there's no hiccups or shortfalls, as you can see all the area is serene and calm, the inspectors and invigilators are going over their duties intelligently.

"As at last year, this particular centre was rowdy and even examination malpractice was recorded here but today there is no such thing. I believe the right personnel were put in place. The examination exercise was decentralised and the proprietors of private schools were carried along."

However, some parents and school representatives suggested that the Ministry consider increasing the number of examination centers to accommodate the growing number of learners and schools, as some students were forced to sit four to a seat designed for three.

The Ministry's efforts to ensure a successful examination exercise were evident, and stakeholders have called for continued improvement, including provision for safe mobility to convey examination papers to centers and ensuring all centers start the examination at the same time.

Cult Clash Claims Lives in Benin City

By Innocent Okoh
27 June, 2025

A wave of violence has hit Benin City, the Edo State capital, as suspected cultists allegedly killed three vigilante members and two others in separate incidents. The attacks, which occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, have raised concerns about escalating cult wars in the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims included Emma Big, a revenue collector for a drivers' union, who was shot dead on Wednesday morning around Akugbe Street. On Thursday evening, three vigilante members were killed at a popular hotel on Wire Road in Oredo LGA.

Sources suggest that members of notorious cult groups, including Aiye (Black Axe), Eiye, and Maphite confraternity, may be involved in the renewed violence. While the state police command has not released an official statement, efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further reprisal attacks.

The recent incidents have sparked fear among residents, who worry that the violence could spread to other parts of the city, leading to more deaths. The situation remains volatile, and authorities are working to restore peace and order.
