THE INTRUSION OF POLITICS IN NURSING SCIENCES AND MIDWIFERY EDUCATION: A THREAT TO PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE.
Passing the nursing exam is extremely important as it guarantees competence, provides legal and professional recognition, builds trust with patients, and marks a significant personal accomplishment. The certificate is not just an academic requirement; it is the key to becoming a trusted and capable nurse who can make a difference in the lives of others.
In short, the medical and health profession is about saving lives, not serving political interests. Passing students must always depend on competence, not connections.
I recently came across a post attributing the failure of the school of midwife students' recent national examination to the school management, especially the Provost, and I ask, how is this possible? I mentioned the Provost because they were again seeking her removal and reinstatement of the immediate past Provost, which is where politics comes in.
However, The recent examination marked the third one conducted this year, with the first taking place in March 2025, where all students achieved passing grades. In April, the pass rate remained at 100 percent; however, the recent examination conducted in September saw only 3 out of 53 students pass. This disparity underscores the students' unfavorable attitudes towards learning, lack of resilience, poor study strategies, and lifestyle problems.
Despite this, the school management warrants recognition for their efforts, particularly in comparison to some private schools in Minna, Private school where all students failed the national examination without receiving public attention.
Ultimately, the school management must ensure that graduating students have genuinely passed the national examination, as we have placed our trust in them, and we continue to pray that they do not fail us by producing incompetent nurses or midwives.
The only catastrophe that can befall a society is when the medical and health school begin producing inept nurses or midwives.
