Hundreds of rice farmers in MajinGari Village in Lavun local government area of Niger state are to be trained under the improved Rice seed system in Nigeria.
This programme is aimed at introducing latest demonstrated technologies to farmers for improved yields.
The establishment of improved Rice seed system in Nigeria is facilitated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Crop Sciences and the National Cereals Research Institute, Badeggi.
The aim is to develop good seeds for the adoption of farmers in the rural areas to boost their productivity.
Speaking at a Field Tour, Coordinator of the Project, Dr Khadijat Ajadi said it is also a celebration of innovation that drives rice production and community partnership.
She explained that adoption of the new technology would boost harvest and urged the farmers to adhere to good agronomic practices to fully reap its benefits.
The Head of Extension Research and Services Programme National Cereals Research Institute Badeggi Dr. Onyenkazi Hycienth cautioned the farmers against neglecting the improved seeds to ensure food security.
Some of the farmers in the community expressed readiness to adopt the new seeds after seeking clarification on the usage and benefits.
Speaking on behalf of the Agricultural Development Programme Mallam Umar Danlamin pointed out that the process would need adequate and committed extension workers to succeed.
