Over two thousand hectares of rice farm in Majin Gari village of Lavun local government area of Niger stat, are on the verge of being washed away by flood.

The situation which is as a result of constant heavy downpour has left the farmers counting their loses.

Majin Gari village is one of the largest producers of rice in Niger state with thousand of hectares of rice farm.

Rice cultivation in the area is so important that farmers harvest it three times in a year, dry season inclusive.

It serves the immediate markets in the state while off takers across the country visit the village during harvest to buy from the farmers.

Unfortunately, this strategic rice producing community is on the verge of experiencing a bad year with the havoc wreaked by flood.

Presently, majority of the hectares are already submerged while others are at the mercy of future floods.

Some of the farmers expressed worry that this may lead to scarcity and eventual increase in the price of the commodity.

To make matter worse, the Badeggi irrigation system that would have supported the farmers during dry season farming is in bad shape as its canal can no longer accommodate the large scale of water coming into the community from the rivers in Bida.

Radio Nigeria discovered that the irrigation system was constructed during the colonial era and the only time it was renovated was during the military administration of David Mark in 1984.
