FG to Phase Out Power Sector Subsidy from 2027, Rules Out Immediate Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has announced plans to gradually phase out electricity subsidies beginning in 2027 as part of ongoing reforms aimed at making Nigeria's power sector more financially sustainable.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this during a media parley with journalists in Abuja on Friday, July 31, 2026.

According to the Minister, the planned subsidy removal will be implemented in phases to minimize its impact on Nigerians. He assured citizens that the government remains committed to protecting consumers and ensuring they continue to benefit from ongoing improvements in electricity supply.

Tegbe also clarified that there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, stressing that the current focus is on improving efficiency, reducing losses, and strengthening the financial viability of the power sector.

Nigeria's electricity industry has for years relied heavily on government subsidies to bridge the gap between the actual cost of generating and transmitting electricity and the amount distribution companies recover from consumers. The growing subsidy burden has placed significant pressure on public finances, prompting the government to pursue long-term reforms.

The planned phase-out is expected to encourage greater investment in the power sector while improving cost recovery and service delivery. However, the government says the transition will be carefully managed to avoid undue hardship on electricity consumers.

Further details on the implementation framework are expected to be released ahead of the 2027 commencement date.

Former Kebbi Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim K. Aliyu, Dies After Prolonged Illness

Former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ibrahim K. Aliyu (Matawallen Yauri), has passed away after a prolonged illness.

He reportedly died on Friday, July 31, 2026, in Sokoto, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

The late Alhaji Ibrahim K. Aliyu served as the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State during the administration of former Governor Alhaji Usman Nasamu Dakingari, where he contributed significantly to the governance and development of the state.

His death has been described as a great loss to Kebbi State and Nigeria. Family members, political associates, friends, and well-wishers have continued to pay tribute to him, describing him as a humble leader, respected statesman, and compassionate philanthropist.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.

Muslims across the state have continued to pray for the deceased, asking Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive his shortcomings, envelop him in His mercy, widen and illuminate his grave, grant him Aljannatul Firdausi, and bless his family and loved ones with the strength and patience to bear the loss.

Tinubu to Governors: You Have Enough Money, Stop Building Unnecessary Flyovers, Invest More in Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors to prioritize investments that directly improve the lives and safety of Nigerians, urging them to stop constructing unnecessary flyovers and instead channel available resources toward tackling insecurity and other critical development needs.

Speaking during a meeting with governors, the President noted that increased allocations from the Federation Account have significantly improved the financial capacity of states, stressing that governors now have enough resources to address pressing challenges affecting their people.

Tinubu said while flyovers may be necessary in areas experiencing severe traffic congestion, many states would benefit more from investing in security, road networks, education, healthcare, agriculture, and other projects that have a direct impact on citizens.

He emphasized that the fight against insecurity requires greater commitment and investment from state governments, urging governors to work closely with security agencies and strengthen measures aimed at protecting lives and property.

The President also encouraged state leaders to ensure prudent management of public funds by focusing on projects that stimulate economic growth, create jobs, improve transportation, and enhance the welfare of citizens rather than embarking on expensive infrastructure with limited public value.

BREAKING NEWS: Gov. Nasir Idris Creates New District in Suru, Upgrades Tarasa to District Status

Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), has approved the creation of Zarmakwai District from Alijannare District in Suru Local Government Area and upgraded Tarasa Village Head to a District Head after carving it out of Kola District in Birnin Kebbi LGA.

As part of the approval, Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar Sarki has been appointed District Head of Zarmakwai, while Alhaji Faruku Abubakar becomes the new District Head of Tarasa.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar Dutsinmari, said the decision was made in accordance with the Kebbi State Local Government Law, 2008, and urged the newly appointed district heads to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication.

The Kebbi State Ministry of Health has commenced the administration of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) Cycle 2 for children aged 3 to 59 months across the state.

The intervention is designed to protect children against malaria during the peak malaria transmission season, thereby reducing illness, severe complications, and deaths associated with the disease.

The Ministry of Health therefore calls on all parents and caregivers to ensure that every eligible child receives the SMC medication as scheduled.

Parents are also encouraged to have their children receive the malaria vaccine at the nearest health facility or designated vaccination post, where available, as part of efforts to provide comprehensive protection against malaria.

The Ministry urges communities to support the exercise and cooperate with health workers to ensure that no eligible child is left behind.

Together, we can protect our children from malaria and give them a healthier future.

The Kebbi State Ministry of Health has commenced a three-day Stakeholder Engagement Meeting for the 2026 State Health Joint Annual Review (JAR), bringing together key players in the health sector to assess progress and chart a strategic path toward improving healthcare delivery in the state.

The meeting, supported by development partners, is aimed at aligning the state's health priorities and investments with the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the Health Sector Strategic Blueprint (HSSB), while advancing the collective goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Joint Annual Review Committee and Honourable Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Yakubu Samaila Augie, described the meeting as a vital platform for evaluating the performance of the health sector over the past year.

He noted that the review provides an opportunity to celebrate achievements, identify implementation gaps, and agree on practical strategies that will strengthen healthcare service delivery and improve health outcomes for the people of Kebbi State.

The Commissioner expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health, development partners, heads of health agencies, local government representatives, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, professional associations, health workers, and other stakeholders for their unwavering commitment and contributions to the development of the state's health sector.

World Hepatitis Day: Kebbi Takes Action to Eliminate Hepatitis, Provides Free Public Screening

Kebbi State has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Hepatitis Day with a renewed commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis.

The celebration, themed "Breaking Down Barriers to Accelerate Hepatitis Elimination," emphasized the need to improve access to prevention, testing, and treatment services.

The event, organized by the Kebbi State Ministry of Health, featured a street awareness rally, the display of advocacy banners, and free hepatitis screening services at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.

Speaking during the event, the State Director of Public Health, Alhaji Usman Magaji, described World Hepatitis Day as a significant global health campaign aimed at raising awareness about viral hepatitis, its modes of transmission, preventive measures, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

He noted that hepatitis is both preventable and treatable but expressed concern over the increasing number of reported cases in Kebbi State and across the country.

He assured that the Ministry of Health would continue to intensify public enlightenment campaigns, provide free screening services, and promote early diagnosis and treatment to reduce the spread of the disease.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Director of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, Dr. Shehu Nuhu Koko, urged all pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics to know their hepatitis status in order to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

Dr. Koko also encouraged them to share the knowledge they acquired on the causes, modes of transmission, prevention, and treatment of hepatitis with their husbands, family members, and friends, stressing that community awareness is essential to controlling the disease.

The event was attended by the State Programme Manager of the State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA), Alhaji Usman Muhammad Magoro; the State Programme Manager for Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control, Shehu Auta Gele; the State Programme Manager of the State AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STI Control Programme, Mallam Ayuba Madugu Augie; as well as other health stakeholders among others.

The Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), with support from UNICEF Nigeria, has flagged off the Green Rising Initiative by planting 1,000 tree seedlings across the university campus.

The initiative, which aims to empower young people, combat climate change, expand green spaces, and promote environmental sustainability, was implemented in collaboration with the Kebbi State Ministry of Environment, the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), and the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Kebbi State Chapter.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Muhammad Umar Zaiyanu, expressed appreciation to UNICEF Nigeria for supporting the institution with the tree-planting campaign. He described the initiative as timely and in line with the University's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Professor Zaiyanu noted that the University recognizes the vital role of trees in mitigating the effects of climate change, improving biodiversity, and creating a healthier learning environment. He emphasized the need to plant more trees across the campus and directed the Physical Planning and Maintenance Department to ensure adequate watering and proper maintenance of all the seedlings to guarantee their survival and growth.

Also speaking, the UNICEF WASH Facilitator in Kebbi State, Mr. Toyin Adisa, commended the University Management, students, and other stakeholders for embracing the Green Rising Initiative. He encouraged participants to extend the knowledge and awareness gained from the campaign to their homes, communities, and other public spaces by promoting tree planting and environmental protection.

In his remarks, the Director of Environment at the Kebbi State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Dantani Sarki, urged the University to ensure that all the seedlings planted are properly nurtured to maturity. He assured the institution of the Ministry's continued support through the provision of additional tree seedlings for future planting exercises.

Delivering the keynote address, the Chairman of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Kebbi State Chapter, Dr. Sa'adu Umar Wali, reaffirmed the Association's commitment to initiatives that promote environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

"We are not just planting trees; we are planting hope, sustainability, and a healthier future for our University, our communities, and the environment," Dr. Wali stated.

The event attracted students, academic and non-academic staff, government officials, environmental experts, and development partners, all of whom actively participated in the tree-planting exercise.

A total of six species of trees were planted during the campaign, including baobab, cashew, date palm, guava, malina, and teak, as part of efforts to improve the University's green landscape and contribute to climate change mitigation.

Kidnappers Demand ₦200 Million Ransom for Abducted Kebbi High Court Judge

The abductors of a Judge of the Kebbi State High Court, Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, have reportedly demanded ₦200 million as ransom for his release, deepening concerns over the security situation in Kebbi State.

Justice Bunza was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday when heavily armed gunmen stormed his residence along GRA, Birnin Kebbi, and whisked him away to an unknown destination after reportedly overpowering security personnel attached to his home.

Family sources revealed that the kidnappers have since established contact and are demanding ₦200 million before the judge can regain his freedom. However, neither the family nor security agencies have officially confirmed whether any negotiations are underway.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Kebbi State, particularly within the judiciary, legal profession, and the wider public, with many residents expressing concern over the growing boldness of criminal elements targeting high-profile individuals.

Security agencies, including the police and other relevant authorities, have intensified efforts to rescue Justice Bunza unharmed and apprehend those responsible for the abduction. A coordinated search operation is said to be ongoing, although officials have yet to release detailed information about the investigation.

Members of the legal community have condemned the abduction, describing it as an attack on the judiciary and the rule of law. They called on security agencies to spare no effort in ensuring the judge's safe return while bringing the perpetrators to justice.
